  • 01. PresentationThe workshop is funded within the project “URBAN LAB - Urban Laboratory for Territorial Development of the municipality of Divjakë (AL). The case study is located in the Divjakë-Karavasta National Park in Albania, where the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU) of the Politecnico di Milano and INTBAU Albania, in collaboration with the Municipality of Divjakë and the Park Authority, have launched the three-year research project called “Urban Lab”.

The Workshop deals with the regeneration and adaptive reuse project of the existing “ruins” through a circular design/construction process, using the sustainability criteria through innovative materials and limited economic resources. The possibilities of reuse and enhancement of some existing buildings within Divjakë-Karavasta National Park will be explored and linked to local historical memory – small abandoned architectures, military garrisons dating back to the Italian occupation of the 1930s, new buildings used for political prisoners during the Albanian civil war of 1997. Moreover, reconnecting the several illegal and unfinished buildings present inside the forest to the environment and rediscovering, in permanence or variations, new ways to live and share the experience of the Karavasta Park and its different ecologies.

The Workshop aims to test innovative building systems, also thanks to the valuable contributions of the many international guests who work in the field of architecture, urban and landscape regeneration. All projects will be developed focusing on recovery and adaptive reuse (even temporary) of the buildings and their immediate context, with the constraint of studying a circular construction processes and using limited resources.

    Structure of the workshop

The workshop will be divided into different phases that will involve students of the Politecnico di Milano, different Universities in Tirana and albanian young architects and urban planners; lecturers/guests and assistant, as well as the Albanian reference entities.Different case studies are planned within the Karavasta National Park. Students will be divided into groups of 5/6 people. The work is expected to take place both in groups and independently.

Part 1 (2 days): presentation of the case studies and their territorial context with lectures and virtual site-inspections, sharing of basic materials, meetings with local authorities and seminars dedicated to the topics of the workshop.

Part 2 (5 days): seminar days are planned (with lectures and reviews held by various external guests) alternating with the development of group projects, coordinated by WS assistants and coordinators.

Part 3:(1 day): final discussion with guests and forwards/greetings.

Part 4 (2 days): production: individual and group work with the support of assistants and coordinators to finish the materials produced during the workshop.
