“Soccer is universal. It’s a worldwide passion for both young and old and with this year’s biggest regional soccer tournament coming to Outjo, we’re all very excited.”

These are the words of the Outjo Constitu-ency councillor Abraham Job, a soccer loving community leader whose passion for his constituency is clear as soon as you meet him.

Everywhere in the world the transformative power of sport changes lives and bridges gaps where words fail. For the past 15 years, The Namibian newspaper, the most trusted pur-veyor of words in the country, has been at the forefront of using a variety of sports to expose talent, decentralize development and entertain this sport-crazy country.

The Newspaper Cup has showcased the best of our talented youth players over the years, catapulting careers and inspiring children every-where to chase their dreams whether they be on the field or at the faculties of higher learning.

But that isn’t the only benefit of hosting a nationwide soccer spectacle. On top of the massive financial commitment by The Free Press of Namibia and the NFA, the town will see scores of soccer players and fans spreading some Easter joy at the businesses and SMEs in the town. The economic spin off from this year’s Newspaper Cup is estimated to be well over N$2 million and the sort of exposure you would not be able to pay for.

The Namibian sat down with councillor Job to find out more about what they hope the Newspaper Cup holds in store.

“It was a dream that we started planning

for long ago,” says the former teacher who always felt there was more he could do for his community.

“We have ambitions to become much more than a gateway into Etosha. Through develop-ing Outjo, its residents and industries we aim to capture the attention of tourists and fellow Namibians, thereby incentivising investment and promoting Outjo as a destination, and not just a stop on the way to the Etosha National Park. Hosting the Newspaper Cup forms a part of that strategy as it will show that Outjo is capable of hosting national sporting events.”

“All over the country we are experiencing a lack of resources catering for the youth, which puts them at risk of engaging in activities that are not positive. This is why the Kunene region and Outjo especially is so thrilled to be hosting this year’s Newspaper Cup. It will inject new energy into sport in the region and bring many Namibians to Outjo, which is great for our local economy, and our youth and will allow Namibians from other regions to discover our beautiful town,” he added.

As part of their five-year plan to make Outjo irresistible to visitors and investors, the local authority with the assistance of the state and line ministries have spent a lot of resources upgrading accommodation facilities, sports venues and places such as the state of the art N$15 million Outjo Tourism Centre, where visitors and potential investors can learn more about the town’s attractions and support the various SME’s that operate there.

“The youth need opportunities to rise out of

unemployment and we as leaders are doing our utmost to make Outjo attractive to investment, so that through the establishment of SMEs and other businesses, we can add value and create opportunities for the residents of Outjo and the surrounds,” he said.

There are many developmental projects happening in Outjo currently. Construction is set to begin on a N$75 million shopping mall and retail complex which will offer new investment opportunities to the town, create employment and offer visitors and residents from smaller towns and villages in the region shopping convenience and access to goods and services they now have to source from larger towns much further away.

“With all the new shops and businesses coming to town, it is really satisfying to see previously unemployed people having steady jobs. It not only uplifts their living standards, but being gainfully employed also does a great deal for one’s spirit and sense of pride,” he said with a warm smile.

SMEs are playing their role by providing uniquely Namibian products and services that add to the charm of our town, while creating op-portunities for employment and wealth creation.

When asked about Kunene’s chances to win the cup this year, the councillor had this to say.

“We did not fare too well in previous compe-titions, but now the tournament has come home and the Kunene Regional team intends to stake its claim and keep the cup in Kunene. We invite all sport lovers from the Kunene region and from across Namibia to attend the tournament,

so they can witness talented youths playing for their region’s pride. We are behind Kunene all the way and will support them no matter what.”

3 2 April 2015

For many people who have travelled in the Outjo vicinity recently and have stopped

in town to ask for tips on the best accommodation in the area, the answer you’d invariably get is, “you must visit Sophienhof.”

So that’s what we did. Around 10km out of Outjo toward Khorixas, you’ll start to notice a meticulously constructed game fence separating the real world from some place my colleague imagined as being “lux-urious, meticulous, yet relaxed.”

A little further on we turned off and followed the road up to a place that embodies just that - ‘Sophienhof’, a luxury lodge, exquisite hunting farm and a sea of happy people.

The lodge and bungalows are located at the foot of a hill and blend in perfectly with the surrounding nature. The lodge boasts eight bungalows,

camping facilities, a VIP house with an infinity pool overlooking a grand vista and a watering hole where the over 18 species of fauna assemble to drink and dazzle those fortunate enough to visit this mag-ical place. The lodge also streams live video from the watering hole, that can be viewed via their website.

There are of course camping

sites and a dormitory for those backpacking on a budget, but if you’d like nothing more than to disappear into the solitary majesty of the Namibian bush, you can also make use of the Belina Farmhouse on the other side of the 8000 Ha you have to roam around on.

Besides staying at a venue fit for President Geingob, (who has visited there), visitors can make the most of the Sophienhof experience by enjoying some of the many activities on offer.

So whether you use a camera or a rifle, there are plenty of opportu-nities to grab that lasting memento

of your stay. There are also guided walking tours, archery and soon, mountain biking trails, and one can even visit the rodeo arena built on the lodge.

While there, one must take a day trip to some of the many fas-cinating attractions in the vicinity, such as the iconic Vingerklip, the Ugab Terraces or the Otjiwarongo crocodile farm. Whilst there is so much to see, eat and do, no trip to this exemplary employer will be complete without visiting one of the lodge’s two kindergartens where the children of the lodge employees receive free tuition and day care.

Sophienhof will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on all its visitors. Not only do they offer lead-ing hospitality in an environment so neat and well maintained, your OCD will go on holiday too. But this lodge chooses to be so much more than its contemporaries with its loving approach to building a home, not just for well heeled tourists but also for those who built it.

One can contact them at +264 67 312999 or email to [email protected]. Check out their website for more info and be sure to book there when next in the vicinity.

Close to N$2 million was invested by the government for the upgrade of three state

hostels in Outjo. Renovations at Huis Nordia, Junior Mix and Joel Herold were recently completed.

According to a report, the Minis-try of Works donated nearly N$149 000 to upgrade Huis Nordia, while the Ministry of Education collec-tively ploughed N$1,8 million into the Junior Mix Hostel and Joel Herold.

Launched in 2001, the Namibian Newspaper Cup has grown into a household name with youngsters representing their various regions. But the event does not only seek out raw talent, it also brings about many socio-economic opportunities for the host town.

Prior to the renovations, hostel facilities were deemed unfit to host participating teams. When The Namibian visited the hostels, renovations were ongoing and it was clear that the premises needed upgrade. Various taps were not working, a significant number of windows were broken and some beds and mattresses where not in a good condition.

Set between low hills on the brink of the Ugab valley, Outjo has developed itself as

a staging post for tourists. The town is situated in the North-

west of Namibia with a population of 8 400 inhabitants, while it is 112km south of the world-famous Etosha National Park.

Because of its rich German his-tory, it also attracts a significant amount of tourists.

According to the town’s chief executive officer, Josef /Urib, Outjo holds major potential.

“Due to our close proximity to the various tourist destinations, we have a lot of tourism related traffic passing through the town,” he said.

Outjo serves as a gateway to var-ious other tourism attractions such as the Skeleton Coast, Epupa Falls, Twyfelfontein and Damaraland.

The name ‘Outjo’ is variously translated as a place on the rocks or little hills referring to the area’s

hilly topography. In Herero, ‘Outjo’ means place of the cone-shaped hills.

Outjo lies in fertile grasslands, dotted with livestock ranches, thus the main economic activities of the town and the district are primarily

livestock farming, charcoal produc-tion and tourism.

The first Europeans to settle in the town were big game hunters and traders.

In 1895, part of the German army was stationed there. During their pe-

The town gets its water supply from boreholes, which supplies the bulk of the water consumption in the town.

The town has three commercial banks - Standard Bank, First Nation-al Bank and Bank Windhoek. It also has various supermarkets including

OK Foods and four petrol stations. Also, the town boasts various

accommodation facilities within the town and in close proximity. These include the Ombinda Coun-try Lodge, Eotongwe Lodge, Aloe Guests and Stake house, Dan Marie Chalets, the Farmhouse Restaurant, Sophienhof Lodge and Matunda Guest Farm. It also boasts three sports grounds and six schools with one private school.

together players from all 14 regions in a four-day soccer tournament.

The Namibian Newspaper Cup is the brainchild of The Namibian newspaper and has established itself as one of the most celebrated soccer tournaments for the youth. The tournament also promotes the development of women football.

Only players aged 20 or under are eligible for the competition.

Established in 1995 as Sentra, Ok Foods has grown in leaps and bounds over the last decade.

Then situated next to Bank Windhoek, the former family owned business today is part of the Shoprite/Checkers Group. However owners of the store are all local business people from Outjo.

The store was changed to OK Foods in 2000 and was opened on new premises. OK Foods had a facelift in early 2013 and was re-opened in November 2013 with a total new look of OK Foods together with the enlargement of the centre.

Situated in a town known as the gateway to various tourism destinations, the company takes pride in pro-viding exceptional service to tourists and travellers.

“We also offer a great service and value to the local agriculture business, surrounding lodges and local communities,” said Jaco Oberholzer from OK Foods.

In May 2014, Outjo hosted the Municipality Sport Games and according to Oberholzer, OK Foods was able to accommodate and supply all the participants and their families with the goods they needed.

“So we are confident to successfully do it again this year with the Namibian Newspaper Cup taking place in Outjo,” he said, adding that the store will not sell

any alcoholic beverages to persons under the age of 18.

Namibia’s football history is long and storied, from a strong start post-independence to what some

have likened to the doldrums. Our national team has seen it all, fantastic highs, crushing lows, but true to their name, they’ve always remained brave.

Legend does not begin to describe the heights the Brave Warriors attained in the second half of the Nineties. Captain fantas-tic Bimbo Tjihero led the charge, Filemon ‘Ronnie’ Kanalelo was superhuman in front of the posts, while Mohammed Ouseb, Philip Gariseb, Ruben van Wyk, Petrus Haraseb, Ricardo Mannetti, Page Ananias, Sandro de Gouveia, the one-and-only Johannes ‘Con-go’ Hindjou and many other great men led by the equally gifted Rusten Mogane and German technical consultant and mentor Peter Uberjahn, had the nation in a frenzy and Africa at its feet.

This team had been brought up from the U-23 ranks and matured together to form a squad still revered as the “Class of 98” in every soccer-mad corner of Africa.

During this time the NFA found itself headed by Imms Namaseb, under whom the Brave Warriors rose through the ranks, qualifying for its first Afcon appearance in Burkina Faso in 1998 and reaching two Cosafa Cup finals. In the process the Brave Warriors destroyed Jomo Sono’s Bafana Bafana at the Independence Stadium on a day that those lucky enough to remember will reminisce about for the rest of their lives.

“That was a special time and all the right

people and pieces fell into place,” said Namaseb, who is now a businessman and farmer in Outjo.

This was the case when Namibia took to the field against Bafana Bafana in front of a record crowd of close to 20 000 people at the Independence Stadium on 24 January 1998.

By regulation time they were locked in a 2-2 stalemate and before extra time, Na-maseb walked onto the field and reassured the players that they would get N$12 000 each if they won.

And as legend has it Berlin Auchumeb came through as the hero among a team of heroes with his stunning “Hail Mary” shot in extra time which gave the Brave Warriors a 3-2 sudden death victory.

That was also the period in which Namibia saw the its highest international ranking of 68th in the world. Currently we are ranked 113th in the FIFA World Rankings.

“We need to make excellence attractive by offering the right incentives. Our na-tional sport codes especially soccer, need the citizens and businesses to rally behind them, provide the necessary sponsorships and resources so our players can perform at a higher level,” the former soccer boss said.

“What the Namibian is doing with the Newspaper Cup is highly commendable and shows their commitment to engaging the youth and providing a platform where the stars of tomorrow can be nurtured and exposed to top level regional competition, and allowed to showcase their talents,” he added.

2001 - WinDHoEkOMAHeke 3 OtJOzONdJupA 1

Omaheke won the inaugural Namibia Newspaper Cup after beating Otjozond-jupa 3-1 in front of an ecstatic crowd at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium.

Omaheke captain Arnold Hoaseb put them ahead after only nine minutes but Otjozondjupa missed a great chance to equalise when Erastus Gariseb’s shot hit the crossbar.

Omaheke’s Brave Warriors duo of Mogle Naruseb and Maleagi Ngarizemo came on as second half substitutes and Naruseb immediately made an impact, scoring two goals in three minutes, with the second coming from the penalty spot.

In the final stages, Otjozondjupa won a penalty and Paul Nugurib scored from the spot but it was too little too late as Omaheke clinched the title.

Romanus Severus scored the winning goal for Otjozondjupa early in the second half.

Playing in front of their home crowd, Hardap did most of the attacking in the first half through Ettienne Beukes and Patrick Jagger but Otjozondjupa defenders Da Costa Angula and Steven Goaxab kept them at bay.

Severus gave Otjozondjuopa the lead when he intercepted a poor clearance and hit the back of the net with a powerful shot.

It was third time lucky for Hardap after they were the losing finalists in 2004 and 2005.

Substitute Helmut Rugam came off the bench to score the only goal of the 2013 final at the Paresis Sta-dium in Otjiwarongo, as the hosts Otjozondjupa beat Omaheke 1-0.

After a goalless first half, Ot-jozondjupa coach John Sikerete brought on Romario Maans and Helmut Rugam to good effect.

Maans’ long pass to the right wing was crossed back into the box by the speedy winger Barnard Horaseb and was headed in at the near post by Rugam to send the capacity crowd into raptures.

In the semifinals, Omaheke beat Erongo 2-1, while Otjozondjupa beat Khomas 2-0.

Omaheke are the second most successful region in the histo-ry of the Namibia Newspaper

Cup, having won the title on three occasions and finishing second once.

They also have numerous players who have gone on to represent the Brave Warriors through the years, including Hartman Toromba, Peka-

ara Kaaheke, Moses Katjiteo, Mo-gale Naruseb, Maleagi Ngarizemo, Erastus Ndjavera, Roger Katjiteo and Max Mbaeva.

Their most recent success came two years ago when they reached the final, only to lose 1-0 to Ot-jozondjupa, and coach Theobalt Kahuure believes this year’s squad

will once again give a good account of themselves.

“I cannot promise anything but we are aiming high and our goal is to bring something back for our region.

“I managed to get the boys together and we have been training for three weeks, but our preparation has been affected by the rain - it has been

raining a lot here recently,” he said. Kahuure said he did not want to

single out any specific players. “I don’t want to mention any good

players in the squad because all of my players are good, and for us it will be a team effort which will decide how far we go,” he said.

Most of the squad members play

for clubs in the Gobabis domestic leagues, while five players repre-sent Young African in the Southern Stream First Division.

They are goalkeeper Katjinaani Katjinaani, central defender Dono-van Kanjaa and midfielders Umuna Kahiriri, Unomasa Kanguatjivi and midfielder Marcel Papame.

Hardap’s golden years in the Namibia Newspaper Cup came a decade ago when

they finished runners-up in 2004 and 2005 and then went one better to win the title in 2006. Since then, however, they have had little suc-cess, but now they once again have

an exciting team that could make a strong impression at this year’s tournament.

Last year they reached the final of the U-17 Scorpion Zinc Cup, where they lost 2-1 to Omusati. Their young striker Brendon Kontumgondo, who scored their goal in that match, was

also the top goalscorer of the tourna-ment while he was a member of the Namibian U-17 team that recently competed in South Africa.

Another highly rated striker is Petrus Moses who plays for Black Morocco Chiefs in the Hardap Second Division, as is their midfield

general Ellis Brinkman, who plays for Flying Eagles in the Hardap Second Division.

Hardap coach Charles Ortman was however concerned about their poor preparation for the tournament.

“Our main problem has been a lack of funds. We selected our final

20 players but it was an uphill task to bring the guys to Mariental for the trial matches and due to a lack of funds we could not hold a training camp. I don’t think we can go very far this year because the team has not had enough time to prepare,” he said.

Ohangwena have not been very successful in the Namibian Newspaper Cup with their

only achievement of note coming in 2010 when they finished as run-ners-up in the tournament.

This year they have assembled a talented squad, but coach Linnox Kanyeha said their preparations had started a bit late.

“We started a bit late with our preparations and have been working

on the boys’ fitness levels. Over the last three days we will focus more on their tactical play,” he said.

“Most of the boys are still 16 or 17 years old because we decided to implement a development squad so that we can have largely the same squad in 2016 as well,” he added.

By the time of writing they had not played any matches yet, but had lined up a few.

“We have lined up a friendly

against Young Chiefs who are lead-ing the North East First Division, to see how far the boys have come,” Kanyeha said.

They have several key players, including goalkeeper Michael Na-lukaku who plays in the Namibia Premier League for Rundu-based Julinho Sporting.

Striker Peter Amunyela, who plays for Further Fighters in the Ohangwena Second Division is

highly rated, as is attacking mid-fielder Ndali Hangula who plays for Oshikango Chiefs in the North East First Division.

Another highly rated player is their 18-year-old central defender Andreas Neliwa who plays for Oshikango Chiefs.

“I was given a mandate to build for the future, so we have a very young squad and only three of our players from last year’s squad have

remained. We will aim for to make the semi-

finals, and if we reach that, anything can happen,” he said.

Kanyeha said the tournament meant a lot to the players.

“This tournament means a lot to the players and helps to motivate them. We haven’t done very well in the past, so we are now looking forward to making the people of Ohangwena proud,” he said.

Oshana have a good record in the Namibia Newspaper Cup competition, having

won the tournament in 2007 and finishing as the runners-up in 2003, 2012 and 2014.

Last year they lost a close final, going down 2-1 to Kunene, but

this year they have an experienced squad with the core of the 2014 team remaining on.

Furthermore, their preparations have gone very well according to coach Alexander Ithumba.

“Our preparations have gone well and we have been together for three

weeks now. We have already played five friendly matches, winning four and drawing one. We beat Oshana Nampol A 6-4 and their B team 2-0, while we beat Oshakati United 4-0 and drew 2-2 against Africa Motto”.

The Oshana squad also includes some exciting youngsters who

formed part of last year’s national U-17 squad.

They are midfielder Pandeni Kandjabanga, attacking midfielder Manchester United Magyver and striker Israel Shikongo, but Ithumba did not want to single anyone out.

“Our whole team consists of good

players, so I don’t want to single out anyone. Last year we lost 2-1 in the final against Kunene, but both our goalies were injured so I had to put an outfield player in goals. So this time around we don’t want to finish as the runners-up again so I have included three goalies in my squad,” he said.

Karas have twice finished as runners-up in the Namibia Newspaper Cup and their

coach Collen Gusha believes that they can all the way and win the title this year.

“We had a bit of a setback with our preparations because initially some of our players couldn’t make

the training camp because of school commitments.

But this year we are going to give a very good performance - the set-backs of last year have been avoided and we are ready,” Gusha said.

Last year the ID’s of certain key players were not ready in time, so they were not able to play and the

team had to be changed at the last minute.

Two of their key players are midfielders Reinholdt Blaauw and Quinton van Staden, who play for Southern Stream First Division side Try Again, and who were both selected for the Shadow Team last year.

Gusha also rates their goalie Lee Louw highly as well as their central defender Thomas Stefanus, who plays for Young Beauties in the Karas Second Division. Another player to look out for is the central midfielder Ryan Davis who plays for Youngsters FC from Luderitz.

“We are aiming to win the cup and

this year nothing can stand in our way. We need to bring back some pride to our region,” he said.

“We have produced some great players over the years like Virgil Vries, Willy Stephanus and Warren Pofadder. We are rich in talent, but now we need to start winning some trophies,” he said.

Khomas are the most success-ful team in the history of the Namibia Newspaper Cup,

having won the title on four occa-sions while finishing as runners-up three times.

It has however been quite a while since their last title which came in

2011 when they beat Karas 1-0 in the final, but coach Christi Guruseb believes they can go all the way again this year.

“We will be going to compete and I can tell you I’m quite confident of our chances. I’m happy with our preparations so far and I have some

very talented boys in my squad,” he said.

According to Guruseb some of the players to look out for include striker Tjiuna Khoetage and left wing Rowan Engelbrecht.

Khoetage is a prolific goalscorer with Khomas Second Division side

Namib Colts, while Engelbrecht is a skilful winger with Southern Stream First Division side Flamingoes.

Khomas have delivered some great players over the years who have gone on to play for the Brave Warriors and scouts will be out in full force to see what this year’s

crop can produce. Some of the Khomas players who

have gone on to represent the Brave Warriors include Edward Asino, Jerome Louis, Letu Shatimuene,

Lazarus Kaimbi, Sadney Urikhob, Emilio Martin and Eslin Kamu-hanga.

Oshikoto’s best achievement at the Namibia Newspaper Cup came way back in 2002 when

they finished as the runners-up, but after a lean spell their stock is once again on the rise, after they finished third at last year’s tournament.

Oshikoto have an experienced team with many of last year’s players once

again available. Some of the players to look out for

include left back Baloyi Tsandib who plays for Benfica in the Namibia Pre-mier League and is a member of the Namibian U-20 squad.

Brendon Gaeseb is a skilful right winger who plays for Young Rangers and who was selected for the Shadow

Newspaper Cup Team at last year’s tournament. Desmond Kharigub is a powerful striker and their ‘goal scoring machine’ who plays for Chief Santos in the North East First Division, while Hesekiel Kapenda is a talented mid-fielder who plays for Volcano FC in the Oshikoto second division.

Coach Energy Usizi however said

their preparations had not gone well. “Our preparation did not go well and

we had a lot of problems with regard to a lack of money and accommodation for our players. We wrote letters to the government and local business people but few responded and we received very little money. We didn’t have accom-modation or transport for the players,

while some of them also didn’t have ID’s but we managed to sort that out with Home Affairs,” he said.

“We are in the Group of Death, along with Karas, Erongo and Khomas, but if we emerge from the group I’m sure we will go all the way and lift the trophy. We are ready and need our supporters behind us,” he said.

Erongo Region have won the Namibian Newspaper Cup only once before - in 2012 when they

beat Oshana 2-0 in the final. This year they once again have a talented squad but they have been drawn in a tough group, along with Khomas, Karas and Oshikoto.

The core of their squad comes from

the successful Duinesig Combined School that recently won the nation-wide Erongo Red Schools tournament in Walvis Bay for the third year in a row.

These players include the pacy right winger Mario Hashipala who recently represented the Namibian U-17 squad in South Africa and central midfielder

Anthony Khan who plays for Northern Stars in the Erongo Second Division.

Their talented midfielder Luciano Fischer was signed up by Premier League side Orlando Pirates at the beginning of the year and has already represented them this season, while goal keeper Jason Aawala is also a member of the successful Duinesig

side of the past three years. Their coach Batista Gaweseb said

their preparation had not gone very well, but he had high hopes for his team.

“Our preparation has not been very good, to be honest. We only had a week to prepare while we couldn’t bring in players from some of the

regions,” he said. “The core of our team have formed

part of the successful Duinesig team over the past three years, so they know each other well. We will also be playing two regions that we played last year in Khomas and Karas again so we know their style of play and will use that to our advantage,” he added.

Otjozondjupa are the third most successful team in the history of the Namibia

Newspaper Cup, having won the ti-tle twice and finishing second once.

They have performed very well in recent years, having won the title in 2013 and finishing fourth last year, and are once again expected to be one of the favourites to lift the title.

According to coach Martin Tsoaseb, their preparations were however hampered due to the una-vailability of some of their players.

“Our preparations have been hampered by the absence of some of the school kids in our squad be-cause the schools did not want to release them to join our camp. So I’m going to see the head masters

personally now in the hope that they can be released,” he said.

Their star player is striker Glenn Kamutjete, who plays for United Stars in the Namibia Premier League and was the top goalscorer and Player of the Tournament at last year’s Namibia Newspaper Cup in Tsumeb.

He is also a member of the Na-

mibian U-20 squad and according to Tsoaseb he is a ‘goal scoring machine.’

“Glenn Kamutjete is our star player and a goalscoring machine but there are some other players who can catch the eye. Our goal-keeper Jonas Mattheus and defender Kennedy Eib both play for Touch & Go in the Premier League, while

our midfield lock Erwin Tjiuija who plays for Life Fighters in the Northern Stream First Division is a very strong player,” he said.

“This tournament is very impor-tant for our region - we have a lot of talented youngsters who have the potential to play at national level and this tournament will give them a chance to shine,” he said.

Omusati have one of the poorest records in the history of the Namibia Newspaper Cup,

having seldom reached the knockout stages while they have never reached the final.

But coach Shipena Nakalondo said they were well prepared for this year’s

tournament and believes that their luck will change.

“Our preparations have gone well and we are looking forward to the tournament,” he said.

“This time we have more experi-enced players - in the past we had mostly school children, but now a

lot of them play in the league so we are quite confident. I think we will at least reach the semifinals, if not the final,” he added.

Omusati have produced some ou-standing players in the tournament’s history, including the Brave Warriors twin strikers Muna and Tara Katupose

who currently play for Premier League champions Black Africa, and former Blue Waters winger Timoteus Iipinge who won one cap for the Brave War-riors against Angola.

This year they once again have some talented players to look out for includ-ing striker Daniel Kamanya who plays

for Epupa 11 Stars and the Namibian U-17 team, which recently competed in a tournament in South Africa.

Other players who are highly rated include left back Johannes kapweya who plays for Unam Ogongo and midfielder Victor Shaanika who plays for Blue Birds.

Kunene have a poor record in the Namibian Newspaper Cup having never finished

amongst the finalists, but as this year’s hosts, they are determined to rewrite the history books.

According to their coach Henny Kavendji their preparations have gone very well while they have also

received a lot of support from their community.

“We are much better prepared than in previous years. Our seniors at the regional council and other stakehold-ers have gotten involved and have supported us with our preparations,” he said.

“We put the boys in a hostel for a

month and we have already played four friendly matches against first division teams. We beat Chief Santos 2-1 and Golden Bees 3-2 and we are on the right track,” Kavendjii said.

Some of the players to look out for include striker McCartney Naweseb who plays for Black Africa Warriors and goalkeeper Theator Gaeseb who

plays for Eleven Brothers in the North West First Division. Gaeseb was one of the stars of last year’s Namibian Newspaper Cup and won the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.

Another exciting player to look out for is their diminutive midfielder Victor Oaseb who also plays for Black Africa Warriors.

Kavendjii was confident that his team will do well this year.

“In the past we did not do very well, because we did not have enough preparation time.

But this year we have prepared well and I can promise my people that we will advance to the final, if not win it,” he said.

The Zambezi Region has never reached the finals of the Namib-ia Newspaper Cup and although

they have a young team this year, coach Simanga Simanga said they are well prepared for this year’s tournament.

“Our preparations have gone well. We have been training together for a while and have lined up some matches against teams in the region. We will play against the Police team who are

preparing for the Police Champion-ships and against Unam.

The two goalies in the squad - Ter-ence Mukasa of Eleven Bullets and Michael Simasiku of Green Buffaloes are both highly rated by Simanga, with Simasiku also capable of playing in the outfield.

Central defender Aldrin Munyaza who plays for Red Warriors in the Zambezi second division forms the

core of their defence, while attacking midfielder Adelino Kahali of Power Dynamos is their midfield general.

The Zambezi region have had little success in the Namibian Newspaper Cup and have never reached the finals of the competition, but Simanga be-lieves they can go far this time around.

“It will be tough and we will see how far we can go. We will aim for the last four if things go to plan, and

if possible the final. The guys are in a good mood and looking forward to the tournament Simanga however added that they were also looking at developing the current squad for the future.

“Most of the boys are still U17, and I’ve included them for the sake of experience. But although they are young, they play week in and week out in the Zambezi second division so

they are fit and ready - let’s see how they do,” he said.

Simanga said the Namibia News-paper Cup helped to motivate the players as well as the Zambezi region as a whole.

“It helps motivate the players and our region as a whole. The players have received a lot of encouragement and they want to make their region proud,” he said.

Kavango made history last year when they won the Namibian Newspaper Cup for the first

time, but since then the region has been split in two - Kavango East and Kavango West, with the result that it will be much more difficult for either

team to win the title this year. Kavango West has been hit particu-

larly hard, losing a lot of players to Kavango East and they had to rebuild their squad with a lot of new players.

They have assembled quite a young side with several players included who

still played for their U17 team at last year’s Scorpion Zinc Cup.

Some of the players to look out for include their young striker Mba Munzere and defender Moses Mohepa, who both play for KK United in the Kavango West second division, and

midfielder Thimoteus Kaveto who plays for Siurungu United .

The Head of Delegation of Kavango West, Sebastian Kampanza said it would not be easy to retain the title.

“It’s going to be tough. Our region has been split into two, so we had to

start from scratch because we have very few players left from last year. Most of the players we have are from the rural areas that we called up,” he said.

“We want to go and compete and we will try our best, but it will not be easy,” he added.

Kavango East have also been affected by the split in the region, but according to coach

Alfeus Haiyambo, their preparations have gone well.

“Our preparations have gone well but we had some setbacks like our learners could only join us after 16h00 from school for training. But we have prepared well and last weekend we

travelled to different constituencies for some practise matches. We won all our matches, beating Mukwe constituency 2-0, Ndiyona constituency 4-1 and Masare constituency 4-1,” he said.

“We are the defending champions but our region has been split in two so now it will be more difficult to retain the title. But we have an experienced squad and five of our players from

last year have remained in the squad,” he added.

They are the goalkeeper George Siyemo, defender Chihinga Hain-gura, midfielders Jessy Nanyemba and Patrick Petrus, who both play for Cuca Tops in the North East First Division, and their playmaker midfielder Esra Nauala.

They also have four young players

who last year still played for their U17 team.

According to Haiyambo, the split of the region has affected the team adversely, with several players now not available anymore.

“A lot of our players are in Ka-vango West now, including our top goalscorer from last year. But we will have to find a way,” he said.

Haiyambo said their triumph last year was due to their good preparation and team work.

“The team was very well prepared last year and everyone from the players to the technical team played a part in our success. This year it will be more difficult, but we are the cup holders and we have to defend our title,” he said.

National documents are central to the life of any country’s citizens. It is these documents

which allow one to seek employment, travel and be counted as part of the national dialogue. However, access to these documents is not always easy and residents of some of the more remote parts of the country, often have to travel great distances, at great cost to apply for these vital documents.

Councillor Abraham Job of the Out-jo Constituency saw this as a barrier that had to be done away with.

“As part of our goal to empower the people of Outjo and the southern Kunene region, we identified that having to travel vast distances to apply for national documents, is not only inconvenient, it is extremely costly and this discourages people from getting the necessary documentation that will allow them to take part in all the administrative functions of business and the state.”

Previously residents of Outjo were forced to travel hundreds of kilometres to Opuwo, Otjiwarongo and even

Grootfontien to collect their vital documents. This is now a thing of the past as Outjo has seen a boom in de-velopment and now has a sub-regional Home Affairs office in the Etoshapoort area of Outjo, close to the residents who need it most.

“It took a lot of hard work, but we’re thankful to the state for all it is doing to better the lives of the people. The office where Home Affairs now stands used to be a place from which the native residents of Outjo were administered to a place dedicated to empowering those very people,” Councillor Job added.

Residents of Outjo have seen the town transformed in recent years and all this is largely due to the collective will of the community to see their idyllic town become a star, not only in the region, but nationally.

So if you’re in town and need to get your paperwork sorted, make sure to head over to sub-regional Home Affairs in the Etoshapoort part of town to get all that sorted quickly and with a smile.

The Namibia Football Associ-ation secretary general, Barry Rukoro has urged players to

grab the golden opportunity of play-ing at The Namibian Newspaper Cup.

“The NFA will be there scouting for talent. This is a good opportunity to be seen. Be ready. If you make an impression, the sky is the limit for you,” he said.

Rukoro said that youngsters have the opportunity to make it to the U-20 national team and then the Brave Warriors.

“95% or more of the current Brave Warriors players were spotted at the Namibian Newspaper Cup. It is up to you whether to take this opportunity of not.”

Re-emphasizing the importance of the competition, Rukoro said that the tournament is not only a football competition but also a nation building exercising.

“People from all walks of life come together as one. This is an opportunity for regions to showcase their talent and football developmental in the regions,” said Rukoro.

He said that people should take

the tournaments seriously, as it is an undoubted economic opportunity.

“Informal sectors in Outjo should make use of this opportunity,” said Rukoro.

Many people travel to their home towns and have a dollar to spare dur-ing Easter and Rukoro urged locals to become involved and make use of the economic opportunity.

“Whether it is vetkoek or donkey meat. This is an opportunity for the towns to revive their local economy.”

In addition, he said that football is very important and the Newspaper Cup had played an important role in the development of football in the country.

“People get either very excited or very embarrassed during the News-paper Cup,” he said.

While the Zambezi region has been the underdog for quite some time, Rukoro said that they have now improved.

He added that the Namibian News-paper Cup also leaves a good legacy.

“Regions that have hosted it want to host it again. Regions have invested a lot of resources especially in the

football infrastructure. The Namibian Newspaper Cup definitely leaves a good legacy well after its time,” he said.

Recapping, Rukoro said that the soccer cup has evolved over the years, not only in investment but emotional value. “People eagerly await for this competition. We have built a history around this competition. Our top paying football players started with the newspaper cup.”

Lastly, Rukoro applauded the re-gional and local authorities for their involvement and support with the soccer cup.

“The thing about football - the important thing about football - is that it is not just about football.”

Terry Pratchett.

Each one of you have committed yourselves as individuals to the goals you have set for yourselves and

that is what makes a team.

As Vince Lombardi once said: ‘’ Football is like life - it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice,

dedication and respect for authority’’. Therefore we consider football as the most important tool in our modern society for teaching virtue to our youth.

The Governor, the Chairman, the Regional Councillors and the Chief Regional Officer of the Kunene Regional

Council, Mr George Pieter Kamseb, on behalf of the Epupa, Sesfontein, Khorixas, Kamanjab, Outjo, and
