NEW GROUP EXHIBITION AT YORKSHIRE SCULPTURE PARK

SHOWCASES THE BEST OF UK ART AND DESIGN

25 June–30 October 2016

A new exhibition opening at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) this summer will

showcase the best of contemporary UK art and design. In partnership with

St Jude’s, the unique group exhibition features the work of 13 artists including

Mark Hearld, Peter Green OBE and Angie Lewin. Editions and Objects runs

from 25 June until 30 October 2016.

Displayed throughout YSP Centre, Editions and Objects features some of the

most well respected artists, designers and makers working in the UK today

– many of whom are showing at the Park for the first time as well as a few

familiar faces. Selected by Amanda Peach, Retail Programme & Development

Manager at YSP, and Simon Lewin, co-founder of St Jude’s, the exhibiting

artists are Jonathan Ashworth, Christopher Brown, Chloë Cheese, Melvyn

Evans, Jonathan Gibbs, Peter Green OBE, Katy Hackney, Mark Hearld,

Angie Lewin, Karen Mabon, Charles Shearer, Terry Shone and Emily Sutton.

Working with the theme of editions and multiples, each artist will show a

selection of limited edition prints and objects – ranging from screen prints

and lithographs, through ceramics and woodcuts, to jewellery and scarves

– and new works created specifically for the exhibition.

All the works in the exhibition are available to buy, together with a series of

three limited edition prints, individually designed by Mark Hearld, Angie Lewin

and Emily Sutton. Printed by Penfold Press, the series is available exclusively

from YSP.

Related special events include a wood engraving workshop with Angie Lewin on

30 and 31 July 2016. A range of exclusive merchandise, designed by Editions and Objects artists – including a tea towel and mug, tote bag, tin of pencil

crayons and a notebook – also accompanies the exhibition.

Editions and Objects expands on an existing relationship between YSP and St

Jude’s, two organisations committed to showcasing the work of inspirational

artists. Founded by Simon and Angie Lewin in 2005, St Jude’s collaborates with

an eclectic range of artists, including Mark Hearld, Ed Kluz and Emily Sutton, to

create and print unique fabrics, cushion covers and wallpapers. St Jude’s were

named winners in the Elle Decoration British Design Awards in both 2011 and

2012.

In recent years, YSP has led successful exhibitions with some of the UK’s

best-known artists and designers including Rob Ryan, Jonny Hannah and Donna

Wilson. This winter YSP presents Flights of Memory, an exhibition of work by

painter and printmaker Angela Harding (19 November 2016–26 February 2017).

NOTES TO EDITORS

EDITIONS AND OBJECTS ARTISTS

Jonathan Ashworth

Jonathan Ashworth grew up in Leeds, Yorkshire and is a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art and the RCA, London.

Ashworth has always been interested in drawing, in making careful observations of the world as well as imagined scenarios

drawn from the minds eye. His imagery seeks to reflect his all encompassing passion for life; capturing the poignancy of

human interaction, the beauty of the natural landscape as well as that of the city. Ashworth pays homage to the great

printmakers of the past to produce deceptively simple designs that hold resonance for life in the 21st century.

Christopher Brown

Christopher Brown was born in London in 1953. He attended the Royal College of Art where he was introduced to, and

eventually assisted, Edward Bawden, the master of the linocut. It was Bawden who encouraged him to explore this medium.

Since then, Brown has exhibited at the Michael Parkin Gallery, The Royal Academy, The Fry Gallery, The Fine Art Society, and

the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Chloë Cheese

Chloë Cheese began work as an artist and freelance illustrator after leaving the Royal College of Art in 1976. She wanted her

work to feel informal as though drawn directly onto the printed page.

Cheese’s personal work always concerns her view of the world around her which she interprets according to her own

observation and sensibility. Sometimes the first use or intention of buildings and objects has been lost or altered. She tries to

retain a sense of that history and how it subtly infiltrates our visual landscape.

Melvyn Evans

After completing a degree in Illustration at Exeter College of Art and Design, Melvyn Evans studied at Goldsmiths College

London for a year, and took up drawing classes at the Royal College of Art under the tuition of Bryan Kneale RA.

Evans has been a professional artist, printmaker and illustrator since 1992. His work has been widely exhibited including at the

Royal Academy, Royal College of Art and Somerset House.

Jonathan Gibbs

Jonathan Gibbs trained at Central School of Art and Design and the Slade School of Fine Art. In addition to the creation of

new work for regular exhibitions, Gibbs is a Head of Illustration at the Edinburgh College of Art.

Gibbs’ work encapsulates book illustration, drawing and painting, printmaking, editorial and pattern design. He exhibits

regularly in London and Edinburgh. His work has been published in a variety of books, magazines, and printed artefacts as

well as in digital formats and web design.

Peter Green OBE

Born in 1933, Peter Green OBE studied at Brighton College of Art and the Institute of Education University of London. Having

qualified as a teacher Green initially taught at a secondary school in East London where he established a thriving school

printing press, producing small books and original prints. During this time he developed his own work as a printmaker and was

elected to membership of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1958.

In 1988, Green was appointed OBE in recognition of his work. His prints have been widely collected and exhibited, with many

now held in public collections.

Katy Hackney

Born in Dundee and now based in London, Katy Hackney received a BA at Edinburgh College of Art and a MA at the Royal

College of Art, London.

Hackney’s practice is driven by the materials she’s excited by. Materials she uses include woods, plastics, precious and

non-precious metals, found objects, paint, formica and enamel. Her current influences include vintage toys and folk art.

Her work can be seen in the permanent collections of the London Crafts Council, Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts,

Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, and the Ulster Museum, National Museum of Northern Ireland.

Mark Hearld

Born in 1974, painter and printmaker Mark Hearld studied illustration at Glasgow College of Art and then completed an MA in

Natural History Illustration at the Royal College of Art.

Taking his inspiration from the flora and fauna of the British countryside, Hearld works across a number of mediums,

producing limited edition lithographic and linocut prints, unique paintings, collages and hand-painted ceramics.

Hearld’s work is now exhibited all over the UK and commissions include set design for the 2005 film Nanny McPhee and a

range of ceramics for Tate. In 2012, Merrell Books published Mark Hearld’s: Work Book – the first book devoted to the artist’s

work. Hearld presented his solo exhibition Birds and Beasts at YSP from 17 November 2012 until 17 February 2013.

Angie Lewin

Angie Lewin studied BA (Hons) Fine Art Printmaking at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, followed by a year’s

postgraduate printmaking at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts.

Lewin creates limited edition linocut, wood engraving, lithograph and screen prints, inspired by skeletal plant-forms seen

against the sea and sky of North Norfolk and the Scottish Highlands.

She is a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and of The Society of Wood Engravers. In 2010, she was

elected to The Art Workers Guild. Her work is featured in many public and private collections; she has illustrated books for

Faber and Faber, Penguin and Merrell; designed fabrics for Liberty’s of London and designs fabrics for St. Jude’s, which she

founded and runs with husband Simon. Lewin presented her solo exhibition A Natural Line at YSP from 16 November 2013

until 23 February 2014.

Karen Mabon

Karen Mabon grew up in Black Isle, Scotland. After studying at Edinburgh College of Art, Karen attended the prestigious

Royal College of Art in London.

Mabon creates a beguiling collection of silk scarves and jewellery laced with the unexpected; weaving whimsical and

surprising narratives throughout her work. Combining her skill and expertise as an artist and designer with her passion for

materials and accessories, she has blurred the boundaries between art and fashion.

Establishing her eponymous label in 2012, Mabon’s work received instant recognition with a raft of stockists around the

world, coverage in titles such as Vogue and Grazia, and Karen regularly receives commissions from the likes of Anthropologie

and Henley Royal Regatta.

Charles Shearer

Born in Kirkwall, Orkney in 1956, Charles Shearer studied at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen and at the Royal College of Art,

London, specialising there in illustration. Since graduating in 1983, he has balanced terms of teaching at numerous art schools

with work on personal projects.

A passion for printmaking, with all the creative possibilities inherent within the media, has made the print-room a perfect

environment for Shearer to engage with his students. Here, ideas and project work can be developed through processes that

have been carefully modified by years of personal experience and experimentation to establish what he would term “the

factor factory”. A collective experience that has proved invaluable to students at any stage and at any age.

Terry Shone

Terry Shone trained in ceramics and sculpture at Leeds College of Art and Goldsmiths College, London. Before opening

his present studio in Grape Lane, Whitby, Terry worked at Grassington Pottery in Upper Wharfedale and in Droitwich,

Worcestershire.

A lifelong interest in the traditional domestic slip-ware produced by country potters such as Isaac Button of Soil Hill near

Halifax has informed his present work. These techniques, used in new ways, have enabled Shone to produce work which

retains the freshness and immediacy of the traditional potters whilst maintaining a strong contemporary feel.

Emily Sutton

Born and raised in the depths of North Yorkshire, Emily Sutton graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2008.

With a lifelong love of drawing, painting and crafting, Sutton uses a combination of these approaches in her current work,

producing paintings, prints and handmade birds. She is inspired by the relics of a bygone era and afternoons immersed in the

contents of the Museum of Childhood in Edinburgh.

Sutton has illustrated books for the Victoria & Albert Museum, Faber and Faber, Random House, Penguin and Walker Books

and undertaken commissions for brands such as Hermès, Fortnum & Mason and Betty’s of Harrogate. She was awarded

the Elle Decoration British Design Award 2011 for her Curiosity Shop fabric for St Jude’s. Sutton presented her solo exhibition

Town and Country at YSP from 15 November 2014 until 22 February 2015.

ST JUDE’S

Founded by Simon and Angie Lewin, St Jude’s makes and sells unique printed fabrics and wallpapers, and also presents

a selection of limited edition original prints on their online gallery. They showcase the very best in British printmaking and

printed design.

To date, St Jude’s have appeared in magazines across the world with larger features in publications including Elle Decoration,
