rd to re-name the street to honor Chief

Orangetown recalled Bill Harris as a driving force to not demolished abandoned Rockland State Hospital staff housing on the street, but have it be utilized now as residences for local volunteers. Parts of the street will remain Blaisdell Rd. (south to NJ). The headquarters for the Orangetown unit of Rockland Paramedics is located there on Bill Harris Way.

The RC Fire Chiefs Assn. has memorialized Chief Harris with an annual award.

4-99 HAS ITS 3 H&L AT WETDOWN 9/17

The Rescue Hook & Ladder Co. 1 had both of their previous motorized rigs at the Wet Down of Haverstraw’s new 2010 KME, their 1939 and 1969 Peter Pirsch antiques were parked on Fairmount Ave, east of the firehouse, with aerials up into the sky supporting a large USA Flag flying across the street, much to the delight of the large crowd.

Village Mayor Mike Kohut (an Ex-Capt. of Rescue H&L), former Mayor Thomas L. Watson (several times the Co. Pres.) both speculated that this was the first Wet-Down in Rockland’s Firemanic history that “three generations” of a company’s apparatus was together! Many took photos of the trio.

When Rescue H&L Co. was formed in Feb. 1854 it had no tiller and was horse-drawn, as seen in the logo/scene on the cab doors, noted its Asst. Chief Tom Price.

Souvenir mugs and T-Shirts were available. Senior veteran member Andy Kovel christened the new 4-99 with a bottle of “bubbly” champagne.

FROM THE

FIRE COORDINATOR’S OFFICE

Congratulations to the committee from the Columbian Engine Co., along with their officers and members for a great convention and parade last month. After marching with Hillcrest, I was walking back to the reviewing stand and observed Dept. 11 (Orangeburg) approaching. I noticed many children pointing and laughing at what appeared to be the Chief, but as they came closer, I saw that the Chief’s mascot was getting all the attention. It is not all that unusual to see Dalmatians in a parade, but “Jack” (short for “Jackass Jackson”) is a very handsome Beagle. I noticed that Jack was wearing a gold Assistant Chief’s Badge, and seemed to be enjoying the parade and was in step, unlike his owner. Congratulations to Jack for doing his part in bringing home a Trophy – not bad for a rescued dog!
