The CVRD is proposing to implement new Development Cost Charges (DCCs) to help fund the acquisition and development of new parks and greenways in the three electoral areas of the regional district. A follow up meeting will be scheduled. The new parks DCCs would apply to single residential, multi- residential and tourism accommodations developments DCCs would be collected at subdivision for single residential developments and at building permit for multi-residential and tourism accommodation developments. Building and Land Development Forum The City of Campbell River is launching a series of one-hour Lunch 'n' Learn sessions for local builders and developers, on the third Wednesday of every month. The discussion will offer a "cross pollination" opportunity to share ideas and information, says Ross Blackwell, the city's land use services manager. "It's designed to be both educational and interactive, with two- way information sharing," Blackwell adds. Each monthly session will highlight a different topic, such as updates to the BC Building Code, developing or building near steep slopes and many more. The first session is scheduled for noon, Wednesday, July 18 in the Rivercorp boardroom. The topic will be city application processes and requirements. This includes building permits, subdivision, re-zoning and more. Sessions will also include an overview of the roles and responsibilities of building inspectors, and senior planners, who will attend the lunch hour forum. Seating is limited. Local industry professionals are reminded to bring their own brown bag, and reserve a spot by calling the City of Campbell River at 250.286.5725. editor’s note... The Comox Valley Regional District invites proposals from interested parties to evaluate the feasibility of renovating the Comox Valley Curling Rink. Some structural improvements have been carried out in recent years, but if the building is to have a significantly longer life, substantial work will be needed. A new concrete slab could possibly be poured on top of the existing one, but whether that would actually be practical and cost-effective while retaining the rest of the building's structure needs to be identified in a study. See our tender section for more information. North Island College is seeking proposals for a feasibility study on the development and operation of a student residence at their Comox Valley Campus. The primary objective of the study is to determine what would be the most suitable form of residence for College students and what financially viable options are available for the college. Seven duplex homes and four single residential homes will be built on the corner of Crown Isle Drive and Malahat Drive. All units will have approximately 1400-1500 square feet of living area on the main floor with approximately 500-600 square feet on the upper floor. Site preparation is expected to be underway once the approvals are in place. Construction is expected to begin within the next few months. The tender closing date for the Comox Valley Sports Centre Renovation and Addition has been adjusted for both sub-trades and general contractors until early April. A mandatory site meeting has been rescheduled for today, Wednesday at 1pm. See our tender section for more information. See you next week! Clarice Coty

Vancouver Island Real Estate Board Honors Marty Douglas

It is with great pleasure that the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board acknowledges and congratulates, Mr. Marty Douglas of Coast Realty Group (Comox Valley) Ltd, as VIREB’s newest Honorary Member and thanks him for his many contributions to the real estate industry and his community. At its General Meeting, held February 26th, Marty Douglas was acknowledged as their seventh Honorary Member in its almost 60 year history. This prestigious honour is given to a deserving member who by their exceptional contributions to the industry have significantly aided in its growth and development.

Recipients receiving Honorary Membership have engendered respect from both within the real estate industry and within their community. This respect is gained, not only through their level of professionalism and the quality of real estate service that they provide, but also their commitment and involvement in industry and community services. Congratulations Marty!

YANA (You Are Not Alone Society) is asking the business community for assistance in finding new office space. The organization helps families who have to travel outside the Comox Valley for their children’s medical needs. YANA will have to relocate in May due to the renovations at the Comox Recreation Centre, where they currently rent a small office. They are seeking a long term arrangement and are interested in hearing from business owners that may have 100 to 200 square feet of office space available for rent. For more information, please call Judy Cryer at 250.400.0404.
