Water scarcity is being recognized as a present and futurethreat to human activity, and, as a consequence, water purifi-cation technologies are gaining major worldwide attention.Advanced materials have many properties, such as strongadsorption, enhanced redox, and photocatalytic properties,providing unprecedented opportunities to treat surfacewater,groundwater, and industrial wastewater that are contami-nated with toxic metals, organic and inorganic compounds,bacteria, and viruses. Currently, tremendous progress hasbeen made in development of advanced materials for theirenvironmental applications, and knowledge has been accu-mulated of the effects of these advanced materials on andtheir applications in the environment security, recycling, andreuse of raw materials and treatment agents, economic bene-fits, and potential problems to our society. This special issueaims to provide an up-to-date account of advancement inthese areas as well as insights gained through field experience.
Specifically, this special issue aims to study (a) advancedmaterials and advanced composite materials applications inwater treatment, industry wastewater treatment, resourcereuse of noblemetals (e.g., gold, silver) from industrywastew-ater, environmental analysis, and groundwater remediation;(b) potential toxicity of engineered advanced (composite)materials; (c) transformations of advanced (composite)mate-rials in the environment; and (d) modifications of advanced(composite) materials for enhancing contaminant uptakefrom aqueous solutions. While the selected six papers maynot fully cover the topic of this special issue, they represent
the rich and many-faceted knowledge that we are pleased toshare with the readers.
Y. Zhang et al. present an updated review on removingnitrate from groundwater, focusing on innovative ideas ascompared to the traditional way. Their work highlights theactual performance of a polyvinyl chloride (PVC)membranebiofilm reactor for removing nitrate from groundwater, withthe influences of DO and membrane fouling on the processbeing assessed.
Offcuts and natural mineral are important materials forremoving pollutants due to their low cost. In particular indeveloping countries, high cost is the main factor that limitsthe development of environmental protection industry. D.L. Wu et al. demonstrated that iron shavings, a commonbyproduct ofmechanical processing plants, can offer superiorreductive dechlorination of hexachloroethane (HCA). Whilethe purity of such Fe metals may be low, these shavings arereadily available at low costs and could potentially be usedfor remediation. “Treating wastes with another waste” is asustainable approach in environmental engineering fields.F. Zhou et al. prepared and characterized polyaluminiumchloride by utilizing fluorine-containing waste with acidicmother liquids from the clay-brine synthetic cryolite process,with detailed processes of the synthesis and characteristicsbeing described.
X. Xu et al. present their work on preparation andapplication of sustained-release potassium ferrate (VI). Theydescribe a novel encapsulation method using hypochlorite

oxidation to prepare sustained-release K2FeO4during water
treatment. Composite materials have gained the unprece-dented development in recent years, but they also have manyproblems, such as the stability, economical efficiency, applica-bility, and feasibility. The article provides the insight on howtomake a composite material have a better performance thanthe individual materials.
Y. Yang et al. prepared Li(I) doped Pr:Y2SiO5
upconversion materials and anatase TiO2nanofilm coated
Li,Pr:Y2SiO5
composite. They tested the luminescenceintensities emitted by these composite materials and thephotodegradation performances of these materials fortreatment of nitrobenzene in wastewater. Their results showthat Li,Pr:Y
2SiO5
has a much better photodegradationperformance than Pr:Y
2SiO5, indicating that rare earth
luminescent materials may have much greater applicationpotential when combined with (or doped by) other materials(e.g., anatase TiO
2and rare earth ions).
K. Xie et al. evaluated the effect of salinity on membranefouling characteristics in an intermittently aeratedmembranebioreactor (IAMBR). They investigated the system perfor-mance and variation of sludge characteristics at differentsalinities. The membrane fouling may be attributed to theinteractions of the variation of sludge characteristics causedby salinity. Therefore, future studies should pay more atten-tion to expand our knowledge of the relationship amongthe membrane fouling and sludge characteristics in salinitywastewater.
We believe that this special issue can benefit researchers,practitioners, and educators. The readers will find that thisspecial issue not only contains accurate information andupdated reviews on some advanced (composite) materials,but also has extensive applications of new materials. We alsohope that the special issue will give more inspiration for thedevelopment of new or composite advanced materials in thefuture.
