Viewpoint couple of s habby mis-guided, mismanaged art-ists, but the toll wouldn't have been too heavy. Today, the Canadian music industry has come of age . Many feel that the sound of Canada's mus1c h as improved . Their are al so many who feel that RPMMusic Weekly h as made a signi-

ficant contribution ro exc itin g the Ca na-dian broadcasters into exposing more domestic product.

Record companies today look at Cana-dian-m ade masters as sound investments in the future. Fewer artists are sojournin g to the production centres of the US and UK to find "the soun d " . In many cases , the domestic productions have wo n over the imported soun d . This wouldn 't h ave been the case only a few s hort months ago . As o ne US record man put it, " Cana-dian productions have a sound of their own , and th e fresh new approach of your people shou ld have no trouble in captur ing the imagination of the world. Ju st one o r two top ten discs from Canada a nd the attention of the world music industry wil l turn to Canada.

The attention of the industry through-out the world did turn to Canada when Terry Black (then a Vancouver resident) entered the US top 100 charts with "Unless YouCare" . Lucille Starr ' s "French Song" was another chart entry for a Canadian arust.

More recently the Winnipeg-cut "Sha-kin' All Over" by The Guess Who entered and climbed the charts in the US. Thei r follow-up, "Hey Ho", is also making an impressive climb up the popularity charts .

Possibly one of the best indications of the acceptance of Canadian product is the current story of "Sloopy". This was a Canadian produced record and entered the Canadian charts in May. Slowly it climbed to the top of the heap of Canadian re-leases. So infectuous was the sound of Little Caesar and The Consul s that rumour had it that up to four "cove rs " (cop ies of the hit) would be released to fight th e Canadia n production. Vince also not es that The Baro-nets have been tentatively s kedded for a Jack Parr show in mid-November with a Sul Ii van appearance to follow. Anoth e r popular group Cesar and The Romains, who are curre ntly making it with "Splish Sp lash ", have been picked to appear in a forthcoming Walt Disney movie. The flair and imagination of the French Ca nadia n gro up s have added to their popularity From being garbed in authent ic Julius Caesar toggery to uniforms in pink includ-ing hair they have gain ed the s upport of the 5 million inhabitants of o ur French provi nce. (Ed: If the English Canadians would only offer half thi"' support our music industry wou ld then begin to look like an industry).

French Canadian recording artists Les Ba ro-nets hove just released "Mine All Mine" (Vee Joy) and ore sbdded for top NYC TV shows.

Nashville: Ray Griff will be switching his sound from country and pop-country to rhythm and blues which should be almost a first for Music City. "Weepin' Willow Tree" was a s trong entry hy Ray into the pop-country field but unfortunately didn't catch the ear of the right people. "Golden Years" gave him a good strong count ry image . Now, we un,l erstand, Rea Victor have acquired the serv ices of a top notc h r&b producer (formerly with A BC Para-mount) and will be releasi ng a se lf-pe nned Gri ff tune in mid-September.

Also from Nashville comes a note from Leroy Van Dyke advising that his newes t "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" has just been released in Can.~ da. This is his debut on W. Bros.

London, Canada : Good news for Gary Ruck is the nod given by the US trades to hi s latestSparton release "Break The News To Liza". Country stati ons throughout C .. 1n t...L t ~ln. ~d... iv in g goo

  • "After Four" the popular CFTO-TV teener magazine s how gets ready for its season run. John Spalding will handle the production end with Johnny Bassett Jr. as Exec· P roduc er. Bobby Curtola wi ll alter-nate as host of the show and name Ca na-dian talent will also be given a c ha nce to host this cross -Ca nada s how. Taping of the first two shows took place Sept. 7 with Curtola and T he Martells mak ing the first show and Gordon Lightfoot and The Allen-Wa rd Trio givi ng the seco nd s how that rock-f olk-protest flavour.

The CTV-er "A-Go-Go 66 " will use the tried a nd proven method of s uccess ful TV musicals. Band tracks of the shows will be produced at Hallmark Studios . This wi ll give that big sound rathe r than the barn sound so noticeable in past productions.

Fred White of the Bigland Agency pre-pares for a trip to Los Angeles whic h should net him a nd the Agency many good contacts. There is a lot of in te rest in the Ca nadian scene being ge ne rated by very important West Coasters, among them be-i ng lrwin Z ucker, Dick Clark a nd Bob Marcucci. Ron Scribner, Prexy of The Big-land Agency, makes his safari into New York City whe re he will establish a n office to deal more quickly a nd e ffici~ ntly w ith American-Canadian ac ts.

Record Jo tti ngs : The Compo folks come up with a winner by the Canad ia n Class ics. "I Don't Know" has been given the nod by the US trades and could be a chart item across Can-ada if the important people 10 the indu s try are made aware of the release. Also from Co m-po comes the first on W. Bros for Leroy Van Dyke "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue". This is a

Dy lan tune whic h is see ing some chart act ion by the Devons also d is tributed by Compo . "If You Wait For Love" by Bobby Go ldsboro is a lready on the usual Golds-boro cli mb up the charts . The big one, of course, is the Sonny and Cher waxing of "Baby Don't Go" whi ch g iv es this popul ar pair a good spread of record companies. The Eve rly Bros. LP " Bear Soul" is get-ti ng the well deserved "Pick" across the cou ntry. Gordon Lightfoot is reported to have moved from W. Bros . to United Artists. We undersrand the entire King Family will present a 130 minute show in Houston for whi ch they will receive a $35,000 guaran-tee plus percentage, up to 653 of the gross. This popular W. Btos recording family wi ll be returning to their 30 minute TV Sat urday nicer come Fall. We a lso understand th at Phi l Rose, Nationa l promo man for Compo, wi ll be joining W. Bros, Srareside, in a matter of weeks and that Lee Arm stro ng of Apex in Toronto will take over this Mon-treal post.

"Hey Ho" grab a spot for The Guess Who on your chart. They dese rve it. Their newest looks like a giant across the Big-land and probably by the time you read this

they will be on their way up t he c harts of th e US trades. Lovin' Spoonful makes it another winner for Qual i ty with "Do Yo u Be lieve In Magic". The Fireballs have a s mas h of an instrumenta l with '' Ahhh Soul''. It has that Norma n Petty ''Hit'' touch.

Paul White is off to LA with a bagfu l of great Canadian releases. Do n 't be too surprised to see The Staccatos, Big Town Boys and Bradfords making thei r US debut, "Lea ning On A Post" is · starting to get good exposure across the country. The Staccatos have a great s mas h with "Do You Mind" and th e just released "It Was I" by The Bi g Town Boys looks l ike a natural for these hard working boys . "Love's Made A Foo l Of You" is s howing strong c hart action across the country and just needs that littl e pus h to make it a national hit. Tom Peacock at C-FUN picks thi s one as havi ng pote ntial. Gerry and Th e Pacemakers have another hit fo r the Capitol folks with "Give All Your Love To Me". The flip "You're T he Reason" is also getting the necessary plays to make the charts. Ian Whitcomb has been touring the country lately a nd getti ng more popular by the appearance. His "N- E-R-V-0-U-S" gets the nod from the US trades . The Beac h Boys make a return trip to Ottawa and Toronto which should spar k a little more action for their s ingle "Ca li-fornia Girls" and late s t LP . In Ottawa, the show wi ll get a boost from Cap i tol re-cording artists The Esquires and another boost in Toronto when the Big Town Boys appear with the west c oast troupe.

RPM picked it as a winner from the beginning and it look s like his own co un-try will fo ll ow s uit . David Houston has one of the great es t releases ever to come out of Nashville with " Livin' In A Hou se Full Of Love". This i s n't going to be rest ri ct ed to the country charts but shoul d be a big pop item. T he Col umbia peop le have hi gh hopes for the soon to be re leased si ng l e by Ray Hutchi nson and well they mi gh t. Ray is one of th e mos t popul a r pe rformers in Canar' a today. Hi s first re-lease will be on Epic with th e production end being looked after by Manny Ke llum. Manny ha s bee n g ivi ng that magic touc h to several good Canad ian groups of lat e in-cluding The Great Scots with "Gi ve Me Lovin" a nd The Liverpool Se t with "Mu s t I Tell You". Billy J. Roya l mak es a great· sa les in vasion with hi s LP release "Down In The Boondocks" a nd releases a si ng le from this LP "I Kn ew You Whe n" and " Steal Away" .

Rea Victor ha ve a n ar mful o f hit s go in g for th em including the newes t by ex -Ottawan Pa ul Anka "Every Day A Hea rt ls 13roken". Keep yo ur eye on " Ska t eboard Craze" by Willie and The Wheels. This co uld be a gia nt. Ga le Ga rnett has been off the scene for a short time but comes back s trong with "Why Am I Standinb At The Wi ndow" Jac k London heads for a few chart listings with hi s "Don't Ever Cha nge Me". The Last Words are taking a little longer to catch on but "The La ugh' s On Me" cou ld be a wi nn e r for thi s popular Toronto four-some. It just needs th a t extra sp in.

The Big Town Boys , Little Cae sar and The Cons ul s and J.B. and The Playboys co-s tarred with T he Bea ch Boys and Sonny and Che r in Toronto and Ottawa Sept 4 th and 5th.

Saul Holliff, Johnny Cas h's mana· ge r ALSO manages Johnny and The Canadians and has made The Cana· dians a vailabl e for one-nite rs and rad io a nd TV promos for Sep tember.

J on and Lee a nd The Checkmates cut fi ve de mo records a t T oronto' s RCA Vic tor S tudios rece ntly . The s ides wi ll be s hippe d to NYC for re-v ie w by two ma jor Ame ri can labels who are more than J UST INTERESTED.

L ittle Caesar and T he Cons uls re lease of "Sloopy" is top fifty now in the major Ame rican trade mags . With record s ales, "Sloopy " is in the Top 20 on doze ns of American charts with booking offe rs coming from Baltimore , Was hington and yes, even San F ranc iscos ' Cow Palace (The record is o . 9 in Frisco this week). A s ne ak-peek at the fol low-up s ays S-M-A-S-H- !

  • Nanaima B.C.: Thursday August 5th was a big day in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. It was the day that 1000 Nanaimo Teens welcomed Bobby Curto la on his first singing ap-pearance to their city. 400 fans jammed a local record store for auto-graphs and another 600 paid to see Bobby per-form at the arena. Radio station CHUB was soley responsible for promo-ting Curtola 's appear-

ance and the results were outstanding for a weekday. CHUB's Gene McCormick has been promoting Bobby Curtola steadily for three years. Gene was the first DJ to publish a 16 page Bobby Curtola Song Book which contained the lyrics to Cur-tola' s hit songs. It was available to all Curtola fans for the asking. CHUB also helped Terry Black with his first record "Sinner Man" by giving it heavy play. CHUB observes Dominion Day in true Canadian fashion by playing nothing but Canadian content recordings for 24 hours on our national holiday. The CHUB Times "Tops In Pops" gives listings to "Sleepy" by Caesar at No. 5, "Only 16" by Terry Black makes it to No. 10 and "Making Love" by Bobby Curtola leads the pack of Canadian releases at No. 4. Canadian record companies should make sure they have Gene McCormick of CHUB on their mailing list.

Lindsay: Local and summer residents of this Ontario vacationland were shocked at the sudden passing of popular CKL Y morning man Roly Hunt. Both Roly and his wife suffe red fatal injuries in an auto accident south of Lindsay.

Vancouver: The C-FUN Potential Sheet lists as Good Potential the new Esquires "Love's Made A Fool Of You". The new Roy Head outing of "Treat Her Right" gets top pick as does "You're The One" by The Vogues.

Owen Sound : Norm Blakely, the CFOS swinger, sends news that everyone had a bang-up time at the Bobby Curtola show at the Sauble Beach Pavilion Sept. 3. Coca Cola lends its giant promotion and publi-city department to make sure the affair was a success. David Clayton Thomas was a giant draw when he appeared at the Port Elgin Casino. "Born With The Blues" the flip of Thomas' newest on Roman (''Out Of The Sunshine") is very popular in the area. During a n interview with Norm, David mentioned the fact that he and his lead guitarist would be heading for the UK courtesy of a certain well known British music magnate. This would be followed by a string of one-nighters across the US. The Big Town Boys made a n appearance at the Sauble Beach Pavillion but found poor response to R&B but being the great versa tile show band they are they switched to material like "Satisfaction" and had the crowd crying for more. Norm was pleased to find that Canadian bands turned down the offer of playing during the Beatles con-cert. They would only have been playing 4

while the noisy a udie nce were being seated which wouldn't have been much credit to them. The Silhouette Review made a smash appearance in the Owen Sound a rea and played a cut from their hoped fo r new release. Says Norm, "I warn you to look out for Joanne Brooks. This is a great sound".

Cranbrook: Ed Morrell of CKEK notes that Billy J. Royal s' "Down In The Boon-docks" is the big item for the North-West area of B.C. "Love's Made A Fool Of You" is getting the spi ns at 'EK and has good potential for the chart. This is a strong and effective station and Ed Morrell should be placed on your mailing list.

Huntsvi lie: Garry Mc Colman at CKAR has a lot of faith in the new Jack London Rea Victor release of "Don't Ever Change". Giving it airp lay brought good listener reaction. Garry writes "This is a song with a distinctive Buddy Holly beat. I personally think this release is his best yet and pick it as a sure hit . "

Gene McCormick of Rud io CHUB Nana im o seen interviewing Bobby Curtola during Bobby 's

    recent appearance on Vancouver Island.

St. John's: "Jungle" Jim Morrison lets us in on a VOCM exclusive . The Keamiks are getting ready to re lease their follow up to "That's My Girl", which should hav e been a hit right across the country. Maybe it will be now that it is being re-leased in the US. Their follow-up is "Everywhere" and "Here She Comes". Actually these two sing les are on their soon ' to be released album. The boys, who hail from Labrador, will be appearing in St. John's. "Jungle" Jim wi ll be the emcee during their island appearances. Bobby Curtola will be appearing in St. John's the latter part of October a nd if things go the same as they did the last time he was there the show will be sold out weeks in ad-vance. Canadian recordings making the VOCM chart this week are "Making Love" at No. 27, "That's My Girl" by The Keat-niks at No. 10 an.cl "Shake A Tail Feather" by the Shondels heading into chart action.

Brampton : The big news for country listeners at CHIC is the Cy Anders re-lease of "My Good Life". Paul Dorazio who looks after country time at CH IC took a survey at random and found the majority of listeners preferred country musi c. From the same station came a call from Don

Gauthier PD. He was excited over the Columbia release of "You've Got A Flag Wave It" by Howard Cable his chorus and Ork . Listener respoose to this and the flip side is "I Wanna Hear That New Sound" and is a must for every radio station in Canada.

Summerside P.E.I.: Bill Seguin and the gang at CJRW like the new Esquires' "Love's Made A Fool Of You". The number one spot on the Top 10 w ill probably go to "He lp" by The Beatles although "Cali-fornia Girls" is making a s trong bid for this position . "I Got You Babe" by Sonny and Cher is a big win ner at this Island station.

The importance of RPM Music Weekly to our broadcasters across the land is becoming more a nd more evident. The following letter is en-couraging proof of this finding. Tin Pan Alley is talking about the "kick-off' of Johnny Nash's Jada label. Not satisfied with his recording caree r for a number of years, hi s record of "Lee's Move and Groove'' might put him back on the charts. This is a fine singer a nd one who deserves hie after hit.
