Editors – Bradford & Lynne Walters Volume 18 – Issue 3 March 2011 e have survived another winter here in the Midwest and are back on daylight saving time. A number of fliers have been out flying already, taking advantage of what warmer weather there is. Our pit area is still pretty soggy and if you have used the grass to land and take-off, you have noticed it’s bumpy. We will be rolling the field soon to take care of that. In the past few months, we have been busy picking up ARFs for the club raffles. This month we’ll be offering an Extra 330 that can take a 70 to 90 size 4-stroke engine. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members of Blue Max and to congratulate them on achieving the Gold Level Leadership from the AMA. I received the letter from the AMA about a week ago confirming the club’s status level. We are making a difference in the community. I should be receivng the pins and plaque hopefully by this month’s meeting. We are still in need of a Program Director for the club meetings. If any of you would like to give a tech session at our meetings, feel free to contact me before the meeting and let me know. Boy Scout intro flights are just around the corner. I would like to get the dates set for these events and start organizing them. Those of you who have contacts with the Boy Scouts, please talk with the troop leaders or have them get a hold of me. I hope, like myself, all of you are looking forward to a summer of fun flying and fellowship at our field. The new AMA safety rules for 2011 will be posted this week at the field. Remember to fly safe, and fly with a buddy, not alone. See you at the field and at the meetings. THE ANSWER TO FEBRUARY’S NAME THAT PLANE

The name of the plane is the Saab JA37 Viggen. Larry Bochenko was the only one to answer it correctlyand will receive a free raffle ticket at this month’s meeting. In the 1960’s, this country’s military sought a newaircraft with short runway performance. Other requirements included supersonic ability at low level, mach 2performance at high altitude, and the ability to make short landings at low angles of attack. With the developmentof the turbo fan engines, this aircraft was the first to utilize two unique options that at the time other aircraft wereusing only one or the other of the two options, allowing it to be a good STOL aircraft. This aircraft made itsmaiden flight in early 1967. See picture below.

MARCH’S NAME THAT PLANE In the mid 1920’s, this was the first US Navy carrier-based fighter plane specifically designed for this purpose.Send all responses to Bradford Walters at [email protected].

On the Road with Pete WarenskiPete Warenski, our ambassador, had an opportunity to visit and fly with Ron Petterec in Arizona recently. Here isa quote from him. “Almost heaven. 82 degrees, 5mph wind and clear skies. Had 6 great flights. Ron let me flyhis Hobbico 60 plus his electric. We watched a fellow lose sight of his jet(Navy Jet) ...and baam!!! it went downabout 1/2 mile away in the desert in a puff of black smoke! . Ron's club field is an 800+ asphalt runway. You cansee the pit area complete with tables. They can fly 5 at a time in the air. Hard to co me back!!!”
