NZ Aussie Specialists cut TOURISM Australia has told itsAussie Specialist agents in NewZealand that it’s discontinuing theprogram from the start of July. The move follows an extensivereview of the program in NZ, withTourism Australia saying it’sdecided that the education andtraining needs of Kiwi agents arevery different to those needed inlong haul markets. Tourism Australia regionalmanager NZ, Jenny Aitken, toldthe agents that the review alsolooked at the extensive State andTerritory training initiatives forretail consultants in NZ.

“Balancing the outcome of ourfindings with the range of tradeactivities that are already inplace, the conclusion has beenreached whereby the AussieSpecialist program will effective01 July 2010 be discontinued inthe New Zealand market,” Aitkenwrote. Participating agents will still beable to continue to display theAussie Specialist certificate andlogo for a further 12 months. Program benefits will alsocontinue to be available untilmembership expires, including“travel club membership”offering special deals fromAustralian suppliers. The Tourism Australia movefollows a similar change byTourism NZ, which some years agostopped operating its Kiwi ExpertAgents scheme for consultants inAustralia (TD 18 Jun 07).

AFTA UPDATEthe latest insights from AFTA’s Chief Executive,

Jayson Westbury

This week AFTA will be taking part, along with ATEC and ServiceSkills Australia (SSA), in a strategic discussion about the futureneeds of the labour and skills work force into the future for thetravel and tourism industry. The discussion forum which will bring together a range ofindustry groups, government tourism bodies both State andFederal, along with CATO, ICCA, GDS companies and others. This will be the first step in framing a plan for how the traveland tourism industry will work with government on the importantissues of training, careers and the future workforce for the industry. We anticipate that this forum will allow for a broad range ofviews to be canvassed and a collaborative approach to reachingsome key objectives for the future. From this point importantpolicy frameworks will be developed to allow the industry to workwith SSA and the State and Federal governments on training andworkforce development needs in the coming years. I am hopeful that this forum will release some new and freshthinking on these very important issues and allow a clear workingagenda to be developed for the future. More information aboutthe outcomes from this forum will be released in the coming weeks.

I am also really pleased to report that the retail travel agentparticipants of the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) in Adelaide afew weeks ago have reported a very successful event. AFTA has been working with Tourism Australia on this for severalyears and this year was the first year in which agents were flowninto the event to experience the broad range of Australian producton display. Next year ATE will be held in Sydney and I am very hopeful thatwe will be able to expand this event to more agents interested inselling domestic destinations. All of the participants have provided valuable feedback aboutATE and how to best design participation to get more outof the event, and we will be working in advance ofnext year to fine tune this in the hope that moreagents can take part. Tourism Australia did a fantastic job inproducing ATE and it was a great opportunity forthe retail sector to take part.
