OverviewAdobe Systems’ After Effects has been a major player in the visual FX industry for many years. It is designed for compositing, not editing, so there is a great synergy when it comes to using After Effects with Grass Valley EDIUS editing software, especially when using the Grass Valley HQX codec with its built-in alpha channel. This Application Note describes the workflow between the two applications, in both directions, including when used in conjunction with GV STRATUS.

A) EDIUS with After Effects Workflow

Tested Tools

• EDIUS Elite 7 (v7.40 or later), or EDIUS Pro 7 (v7.40 or later)

Note: If you are using DNxHD as the intermediate codec with EDIUS Pro 7, you will need to ensure that the DNxHD option is installed (installed as standard with EDIUS Elite)

• After Effects CC 2014 (Windows version)

Points to Note

• After Effects cannot export AAF or EDIUS project files.

• The frame rate of the EDIUS project should be the same as for the source files.

Before you start, please be aware of the following:

• This workflow does not support clips which cannot be imported into After Effects

Workflow 1

1) Import your source files into EDIUS and edit as normal.

2) When you have finished editing, export as AAF. Select [File] > [Export Project] > [AAF].



3) The Project Exporter (AAF) dialog box ap-pears – complete as follows:

• [File name]: Enter your file name

• [Save as type]: AAF File (*.aaf)

• [Preset]: Type 2

Press [Save].

4) Your AAF file and associated audio files (AIFF) will be exported. The audio files are exported to a folder with the same name as the exported AAF file, in the same lo-cation.



5) Start After Effects and select [File] > [Import] > [Pro Import After Effects…].

6) The Pro Import After Effects dialog box appears. Select the exported AAF file and click [Import].



7) The composition and media files are imported to the Project panel.

9) Create your visual effects.

8) Double-click the compo-sition clip. The timeline exported from EDIUS is shown in After Effects.



11) The Render Queue panel appears – com-plete as follows:

• Render Settings: Your preferred settings

– For example, If you export 59.94i video, select as follows:

• Field Render: Upper Field First

• Frame Rate: 29.97

• Output Module:

– Format: AVI

– Format Options…: Grass Valley HQX

– Audio Output: Off

Press [Render].

10) When you have finished, export as a video clip. Select In/Out points and select [File] > [Export] > [Add to Render Queue].

12) Your Grass Valley HQX AVI file will be exported.

13) Back in EDIUS, import the exported file from After Ef-fects. Place the exported clip onto the timeline and hide the original clip. The composited image will be appeared in EDIUS.



Workflow 2

If you export a single visual effect clip only, please use the following steps after steps 1 to 9 in workflow 1.

1) When you have finished creating your effect(s), hide the back-ground video clips and select In/Out points.

2) Select [File] > [Export] > [Add to Render Queue]. The Render Queue panel appears – complete as follows:

• Render Settings: same as step 11 in work-flow 1

• Output Module:

– Format: AVI

– Channels: RGB + Alpha

– Format Options…: Grass Valley HQX

– Color: Straight (Unmatted)

– Audio Output: Off

Press [Render].



3) Your Grass Valley HQX AVI with Alpha file will be ex-ported.

4) Back in EDIUS, import the file exported from After Ef-fects. Place the exported clip on the track above the original clip. The compos-ited image will appear in EDIUS.

Workflow

1) EDIUS Elite Imports assets from GV STRATUS and edits them.

2) When you have finished editing, export as AAF with Grass Valley HQX. Select [File] > [Export Project] > [AAF].

4) Detail setting – complete as follows:

• [Video clip]:

– Select [Copy clips]

• [Copy option]:

– Select [Export the used area to a file]

– Select [Same folder]

– Select [Grass Valley HQX AVI] in Exporter

Press [OK].

3) The Project Exporter (AAF) dialog box appears – complete as follows:

• [File name]: Enter your file name

• [Save as type]: AAF File (*.aaf)

• [Preset]: Type 2

Press [Detail…].



* If you are using the DNxHD codec instead of Grass Valley HQX, set the following settings:

• [Separate video and audio]: unchecked

• [Video clip]:

– Select [Copy clips]

• [Copy option]:

– Select [Export the used area to a file]

– Select [Same folder]

– Select [DNxHD 1080i/p 220/185/175 OP-ATOM MXF] in Exporter

5) Go back to the project exporter (AAF) dia-log and press [Save].

6) Your AAF file and associated media files will be exported. The media files are ex-ported to the same folder as the exported AAF file.



8) The Pro Import After Effects dialog box appears. Select the ex-ported AAF file and click [Import].

7) Launch After Effects and select [File] > [Import] > [Pro Import After Effects…].



* If you exported using the DNxHD codec in step 4, you should set the following in [Modify Settings]:

• [Connect After Effects directly to Avid media files]: checked

• [Precompify clips based on track]: checked



9) Double-click video pre-composition (ex. V1 precomp) and open the video clips timeline. If you require audio, you should copy the video clips to the main composition (ex. Sequence1).

10) Exporting to EDIUS is the same as steps 9 to 12 in Workflow 1.

11) Back in EDIUS, place the exported clips from After Effects onto the track above the original clip.

12) Select [File] > [Export] > [Print to File…].

14) Select settings and press [Send]. The clips will be sent to GV STRATUS.

13) Select [STRATUS] in left panel and [STRATUS Send]. Press [Export].
