Social Learning/Networking for Classrooms

A.K.A. “Facebook for Education”

Page 2: Edmodo

What’s It All About??

Page 3: Edmodo

“Facebook for Education”Edmodo describes itself

as: “Secure social learning network for teachers

and students “.

Student Teacher

They prove it by providing two types of buttons that you can

choose:

Page 4: Edmodo

Teacher Sign Up• The sign up window

looks ordinary with all the usual fields to complete.

• Later you will see that the student’s version has a distinctive difference.

• Username – Select something that you will remember

• Password – Again, select one that’s easy for YOU to remember

• E-mail – use your FCPS e-mail

Your Home Page

This is your Edmodo home page – you will notice similarities to Facebook. There are some modifications here and there to make it suitable for educational purposes.

Page 6: Edmodo

The update area is a tool to send Notes, Alerts, Assignments, and Polls to fellow

students or other teachers.

Page 7: Edmodo

Sending Assignments• Just fill in the title,

description, due date and you are ready to go.

• You can add files, links, or refer to materials from “the library”.

• Choose the recipients before clicking the “Send” button. They could be other teachers in your network, or students in a particular group.

Page 8: Edmodo

Create a Group• Teachers also have the

ability to create groups:– Within your class based on

student interest, pre-assessment results, levels of comprehension of a topic, etc.

– The entire class may also function as a group

• Group name – JGB7• Grade - (7) or range (6-8)• Subject Area - Math

Page 9: Edmodo

Then your status will be updated with the group that you’ve just created. One important thing that you should pay attention to is the access code of the group. You should inform your students about the code, because they won’t be able to join the group without it.

Page 10: Edmodo

• Edmodo finds a way to keep users’ privacy. The group concept will limit everything that happens in a group within the group members. And it’s impossible to join any group without the access code.

• Once you have all students within a particular group registered – you should change the group access code to keep “unwanted parties” out of the group.– Hover your mouse over your group name on the left– Click on settings from the “pop-up” box – Select “reset code” (it will reset automatically) – Click save!

Page 11: Edmodo

At the lower part of the home screen, you will find a few basic things that you should complete to make your account “fully functional”.

Page 12: Edmodo

• For students, the registration process is a little different.

• Record basic personal information:– Username & Password –

students create. Be sure to have students record this information for future reference!!

– They do NOT record an e-mail.

– Students will need the code for the group that they are joining. This is the code that the teacher will get when you create the group.

Student RegistrationHELPFUL HINTS

•Have students record their Username & Password so that YOU have a record of it “in case” they forget!!•YOU help students create their user name (e.g. 24JN2011)•YOU help students select password (e.g. lunch code)

Page 13: Edmodo

• After logging in, you’ll find a list of groups that you’ve joined right under your “avatar”.

• If you want to join other groups, have the access code ready and click the “Join” button – you do NOT have to register again!!

There are links to “Calendar“, “Grades” and “Library” on the top of the page. While you could easily guess what you would find inside the first two, the third one is a bit unique. Library is the place where you can find all the files and links sent to you or any of your groups.

Page 15: Edmodo

You could also add files to your library. This is a good place to store all of the materials related to your

study.

Page 16: Edmodo

Another place that you might want to visit is the “Settings“. Here’s the place to complete your personal information, and change your picture. You can choose one of the available images as your picture or you can upload your own.

Page 17: Edmodo

You could also set the kind of notification (phone or e-mail) that you want to receive (unfortunately, not everybody can choose text messages as their option as it is only available for users of several major phone providers) and what kind of event you should be notified about. Don’t forget to click

SAVE notifications!

Page 18: Edmodo

Just like Facebook, Edmodo makes it

easy to search and add colleagues – all within a safe/secure

network.
