Welcome to Edmond Active Magazine and my monthly column Around Edmond. It has been exactly one year since we conceived Edmond Active and with this column, it will mark one year since I started writing it, online at EdmondActive.com. One year ago exactly, I lost a friend to brain cancer, suddenly.

This friend taught me so much and mostly to be honest, forthright in my daily dealings, taught me to keep it real and have as much fun as possible. I miss Kat Spann, she was such a fantastic person, and this issue of the magazine and the upcoming September issue would have made her proud. Specifically, because they involve a.) doing what we love to do b.) great information put together for our readers c.) stories about persistence and faith.

When the economy collapsed in 2009, I thought I knew all there was to know about persistence and faith. I couldn’t have imagined doing anything other than what we were doing with Amateur MX Magazine and we were/are considered experts in our field. I loved motocross and the people in the industry, and the racing families, but something else was tugging at me.

When we first visited Edmond in July of 2005, I felt it then. It’s a connection with something you just can’t explain. When we started Edmond Active Magazine, I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but it felt right. I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me and that didn’t matter, even though we were working on two magazines at once. I just knew it would work. I have been a resident long enough to know that Edmond needed a fresh voice and not just another venue for businesses to advertise in.

When I first went out to sell ads, it was tough. No one would talk to me, and then when I went out to get my first editorial for Around Edmond last August, businesses didn’t know what to think and another local publication actually used the name in their October issue for ad sales. Then came H1N1 and walking pneumonia. I ended up with more blisters on my feet than one could imagine, someone needs to invent some really cute comfortable shoes.

It was a fall that I will never forget and after meeting so many new people, our contributors, and all of the businesses that advertise with us, I have learned that I have much more to learn about persistence and faith, for they had faith in us to put together an informative and entertaining magazine, and I am more grateful than you will ever know. We will keep evolving as long as you keep reading!

When you read about Miss Oklahoma, it’s another story of persistence and faith. The story with Emoly West shows that if you never give up, great things will happen! Don’t miss her story, and cheer for her in January when she competes for Miss America.

Thanks very much for picking up our 7th issue of Edmond Active Magazine, our family thanks you and hopefully you enjoy it!

Local Heroes

The Kids PlaceBy Sherri Hultner

This month, we have nominated The Edmond Kids Place as our Local Hero. Have you ever driven down 9th Street here in Edmond, between Boulevard and Bryant, and seen the cute little white house with the sign in front with “The Kids Place” on it, but never put any thought into what it is or what they do?

We have, and this month we were given a chance to speak with Kay, who has been a volunteer since its inception 15 years ago, and who has worked at UCO for 17 years, thanks to Natasha Baird of the Baird Insurance Agency.

Danny Mize and Charlotte Burrough started it in 1995 after the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building Bombing, to help local kids and their families with their losses. They were first responders on the scene and noticed in short order that there was no entity that helped the kids deal with all that comes after such a traumatic event, much less the loss of family, friends and loved ones.

The Kids’ Place is a support group center, not a counseling center and is a place to help kids facilitate the conversation that leads to the healing process. Groups are led by trained volunteer facilitators whose training includes information about children and grief, developmental needs of children and teens, using art and play with those who are grieving, group dynamics, and listening skills. The center facilitates grief support and offers free support groups for families with younger children through teens and helps the entire family through the process. They have helped over 375 families since 1996. A theme is developed for each time the groups meet, touching on such grief experiences as confusion, loneliness, guilt, fear, anger, and memories.

They started out as a non profit organization, but the overwhelming response from the community in need left them with the need for more support, so in 2004 the Edmond Church of Christ took over with support, and they are now a ministry of that church.

Well done to all of the volunteers of The Kids’ Place and to the Baird Insurance Agency for bringing this wonderful organization to our attention. You can do something to support The Kids Place by coming to the 3rd Annual Baird Agency Putt Putt Tournament, which benefits The Kids Place, on Saturday August 28 at 8 am. The cost is $10 and there will be food and drinks, as well as prizes!

To contact The Kids Place you can stop in at 801 S. Bryant Ave here in Edmond or visit their website at www.EdmondKids.org

Locally Owned

Emerson Events and Design & Camden Chitwood

With our new Locally Owned Business Profiles here at Edmond Active Magazine, we have been bringing information on local businesses since last fall. In our effort to constantly evolve and keep things fresh, we have redesigned our format to let the businesses talk directly to you! Here is our first Locally Owned in our new format and we hope you like it!

EA: When and why did you start your business?

Camden: My business was “official” in November 2009, but I have been planning events since 2005. I started floral design in July of 2009. I love flowers & I also love a good party! I am very creative & very organized, so floral design & event planning is a perfect fit for me.

I love working with brides planning the details of their weddings, as that was the funnest part for me when I was planning my own! I love to share the joy with everyone! I also wanted to provide stellar service that can be affordable to anyone. I know how expensive & stressful planning a big event can be, so I strive to make things easy on my clients and to stay within any budget.

EA: Why do you do business in Edmond instead of OKC?

Camden: I grew up in Edmond but currently live in OKC, and half of my business is in OKC. I love working in Edmond, but I also love the laid back, community feel that Oklahoma City has. I like to think outside the box and want to bring more of it to Edmond!

EA: What plans do you have for our

readers, with the holidays coming up?Camden: Amazing holiday parties! I love

love love to throw a party & can also help you out if you need assistance with planning one yourself or any floral services.

EA: Are you on Facebook/Twitter and what do you offer the readers there?

Camden: Yes! If you are a business & don’t network on either of these sites, you need to. I post new photos on Facebook so fans can see what I’m up to & love it when someone randomly tells me they saw my business on Facebook! It’s great to meet people in need of your services but also to get to know other local businesses.

EA: What is your favorite thing about doing what you do?

Camden: The execution. I love seeing the finished product when everything comes together and when I exceed the clients expectations. BEST. PART. OF. MY. JOB.

We really love the entrepreneurial spirit that comes with owning a small business, and every so often we run across a business that is so completely original it just makes you smile. This is the case with Paint Your Art Out and the owners, Kelly Garner and Renee Deakle. Open for 8 months, these two have come up with a great idea and it really incorporates getting together, hanging out and really enjoying yourself !

Paint Your Art Out is an artist studio that is open Tuesday thru Friday 11am-5pm for open walk- in time and afternoon sessions, then 7pm-9pm for evening sessions. Saturday 11am -5pm for open walk-in time or private parties and are located at 100 North Broadway in Downtown Edmond. They offer adult sessions, kid’s sessions, as well as family nights. As well, they host events along with other locally owned businesses. You can bring appetizers, your favorite beverage and they have napkins, plates, cups and a corkscrew on hand!

The whole idea behind Paint Your Art Out is to bring out your artist within. As they say, everyone has one. I have been in twice and was completely amazed. I have never painted a single thing in my life, and recently came away with two fantastic paintings. Jay, the resident artist, starts you off with the background, the outlining and then guides you through the shading and final touches. There is no getting it wrong and it’s really fun to see how the process incorporates your personal flair in the painting you come away with.

To register, Paint Your Art Out has an online calendar where you can view the paintings throughout the month at PaintYourArtOut.net/calendar and you just click on the painting you like and it takes you straight to the registration or you can give them a call at (405)513-5333.

My Yard

Prepping and planting your fall garden By Sherri Hultner

This month I will be taking the reigns for the My Yard section

as Bruce Maxwell had his hands full with the wonderful Grand Re

Opening of his store, The Paper Lion.

One of my favorite places to be is in my garden and this is one

of the reasons we have Bruce doing this column, as it is genuinely

one of his favorite things, too.

Every single year in August, I have always felt I was getting

a second chance at my yard and garden, especially if it was

unusually hot during the late spring/early summer or if I was

just too busy to get to it.

With my own garden, I had planted some of our favorites,

dahlias, in mid June, and sadly they don’t like the extreme heat. I

have not gotten a chance to fertilize properly this summer, so this

will be my second chance with my established plants & flowers,

and even with my dahlias.

Each month Bruce gives a fantastic list for what you should

be doing, and I have collected some tips for August.

1. As Bruce stated in July, be sure you are getting at least 1

inch of water into your garden and to your lawn, especially with

the high temperatures. This is key with such warm weather. Be

sure to water in the early morning well, as watering mid day will

cause burning and watering in the evening will cause molding.

2. With extreme temperatures, your plants and flowers have

been struggling to survive, much less bloom. Now is a good time

to apply plant/shrub/flower food to all your plants, so that you

can enjoy late summer/fall blooms in a month.

3. Apply a late summer lawn fertilizer to your lawn, preferably

with a weed killer to enjoy a green lawn for the rest of the

season.

4. If you have a vegetable garden, now is a great time to plat

out your fall veggies and get them started.

5. Until the extreme heat subsides, refrain from planting any

new annuals. They will go into shock.

6. Enjoy!

We look forward to having Bruce Maxwell of Maxwell

Landscape Company back next month to help us all get into the

swing of fall! If you have any questions for him you can reach

him at 405-478-8883.

My Home

The Great Outdoors!

Decorating magazines have been harping on you to create one. Friends and family would love to party at your place if you had one. It’s the outdoor living space and they have never been hotter. Want to create one that will be the envy of the neighborhood? Follow these steps and your family will be squeezing every last drop of sunshine out of the day with their new outdoor living room. STEP 1) LANDSCAPING IS KEY

All the new furniture and outdoor lighting in the store won’t give you a dramatic change unless attention has also been paid to the surrounding landscape. If decorating on a wooden deck, now is the time to apply fresh stain, make repairs or add on to allow for a growing family. Potted arrangements are a quick fix for boring outdoor living spaces and can be purchased at your local nursery. Read all labels and make sure you’re not buying shade-loving pots for a space that receives full sun or vice versa. Rake up fallen leaves and debris from those spring time showers. Bring out one or two potted trees or plants that grow a bit taller for a wide variety of greens; place these in the corners of your living space. Get it locally at: Under The Sun located in OKC, Edmond, Moore and Norman. STEP 2) PROTECT YOUR PAWS

The array of outdoor rugs is endless these days and offer more benefits than just a boost of color. As with indoor versions, an outdoor rug can add texture to your space and anchor your patio furniture by pulling it all together. Completely weather-safe, these rugs come in many sizes and can protect your bare feet from the hot surface this summer. Start with a solid colored rug in a natural fiber like bamboo or sisal. For a more dramatic effect layer another smaller rug in a bold pattern or fun color right on top of the first rug. Just hose them off when they get dirty! Get it locally at: Brecheen Brothers Area Rugs & Furniture located at 3550 W. Reno, OKC 73148.STEP 3) LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

Outdoor lighting is so much fun with today’s

market and you can literally create endless style if you shop smart. Paper lanterns have always been a decorating favorite. Purchase several of various sizes in white for a classic look. Hang from rafters or trees and watch your guests “ooh” and “ahhhh” come dusk. Another look is the metal lantern that you place a candle inside of- a more costly version but also more diverse. Suspend from tree branches, place in the corners of your new space or on table surfaces as centerpieces. Outdoor lamps are another option and though harder to find, they can help recreate a living room atmosphere in your backyard. Their cords are specially covered to protect the wires from the elements and the shades are made of waterproof fabric. Get it locally at: Hemispheres located at 5561 NW Expressway, OKC 73132STEP 4) RELAX IN STYLE

The outdoor furniture you select says a great deal about you. Choose versatile pieces that you can change up with the seasons. I never purchase seating with the cushions sewn in because I want my clients to have the freedom of switching out the pillows and cushions when the mood strikes. Stay away from items that will rust, discolor, melt in the heat, etc. Search for stylish alternatives to accent your space like battery-operated candles, ceramic vases, concrete or resin statues and weatherproof artwork. When it comes to the Miss America pageant, contestants representing the great state of Oklahoma have traditionally fared very well. In fact, over the 89 year history of the pageant, Miss Oklahoma has taken the crown a total of six times. The only other states to equal that accomplishment are California and Ohio.

This year, the 90th Anniversary of the Miss America Pageant, Oklahoma will be represented by Edmond’s own Emoly West. It will mark the culmination of Emoly’s lifelong dream of vying for the ultimate crown in the pageant world—Miss America.

We had a chance to sit and talk with Emoly about her platform, pageants and her chances of being Oklahoma’s 7th Miss America. Our immediate impression of the UCO Senior was that she is smart as a whip, gracious and focused on her goals. But can she win the big prize? Heck yeah!

EA: When did you first start participating in pageants?

Emoly: I started when I was 14. I was actually recruited and asked over the summer if I wanted to be in the Miss Teen USA Pageant. The Miss USA pageants are different than the Miss America pageants. I wanted to be Miss Oklahoma / America, because I had watched the Miss America Pageant since I was 7-years old. I was at a family reunion and my Great

Grandmother asked me to watch the Miss America Pageant with her.

Watching it at 7-years old I didn’t think, “Oh, I could wear a dress, or wear a crown or get applause.” When I watched those women I saw women of exceptional talent and skill and poise. And I saw women of character. It really inspired to me to be as excellent as I could, at everything that I did. So at 7 I set my very first ambition and goal to be Miss Oklahoma / America. From that moment on, everything I did I thought about how that might help me get there—but I didn’t do things solely because I wanted to be Miss Oklahoma / America. Things just came in my path as I grew up that I saw as things that might help me towards my goals. But also, I just wanted to be a person of character, which means making the right choices. I tried to learn from any opportunity, good and bad.

EA: How did you make the crossover from the Miss USA system to the Miss America pageants?

Emoly: I was 4th runner up in the Miss Teen USA pageant—I was 14 at the time—and I was the youngest in Oklahoma to make it into the top five. I didn’t go back to compete in that system. It was good and I got my feet wet, but I just started focusing on other things.

When I was 16 I was invited by a friend to compete in the Miss Oklahoma Junior Teen America Coed system. I won that title and

went to the Nationals and I was 6th overall out of 180 girls. Then when I was 18, I started competing in the Miss Oklahoma /America system. It was just always a goal of mine and I kind of did it.

EA: What does your dad call pageants?Emoly: He calls them a mix between

Saturday Night Wrestling and Monday Night Football in heels.

EA: Is it really that brutal?Emoly: It is that intense. I really enjoy it,

I am a competitor. It really challenges me to be genuine. If I’m having a good time, I need to know how to show it. But if I’m suppose to be having a good time, I also need to be able to show, even if I don’t feel like it. That’s something I told them at my interview, I said “I love this. I love doing this. I want nothing more, at this point, to be Miss Oklahoma—to represent all the volunteers, the people and the organization.” That’s the way I view it, it’s such a huge opportunity.

EA: Do you know Oklahoma’s history in the Miss America Pageant?

Emoly: Well, we have 6 Miss America’s and they always ask each year, “Who will be our lucky number seven?”

EA: Do you have a pageant advisor?Emoly: There are coaches, but each year

whoever is the director of the state pageant is your main advisor. I’ve worked with, maybe, three coaches. I knew I needed some nurturing and I needed people to see what I was seeing.

Edmond’s Own Emoly West Won The Miss Oklahoma Crown.

Next Stop?...Miss America!

Page 18: Edmond Active Issue 7

18 edmondactive.com

So, yes I have worked with people and it really helped. There are a lot of coaches out there, because some things that work for one girl may not work for another.

EA: I would assume that all the girls work with a coach when you get to this level.

Emoly: I would think so, yes. I have always been willing to listen to anything, then put it on the self and decipher what I could use from it.

EA: Now that you’re Miss Oklahoma, has it sunk in yet that you have reached the top level in the pageant world?

Emoly: Not entirely. The first time it started to sink in was a week after I won. We were taking pictures to send in for Miss America and my photographer says. “Emoly, we’re picking out your pictures for Miss America, do you realize that?” I’ve been to the Miss America pageant to support Miss Oklahoma for three years. I’ve always hoped and wanted to be in this position. So far it is everything I thought it would be, and better. I’m so grateful for the people who made me understand that it was going to be hard as well. It has already been better than I thought it would be and I believe it’s going to continue to be that way. But I still know there are going to be challenges along the way. That’s not going to make it less fun

or less than I thought it would be—that’s what I expected. And I think that’s what you need when you have a job like this.

A lot of people don’t understand what the job of Miss Oklahoma is. You’re on call 24/7 and there might be three or four days when you don’t have to do anything, but then there could be three weeks where you have something every day.

EA: What kinds of things do you have to do?

Emoly: I’ll be going into a lot of schools across the state, presenting my program of leadership and character development as well as partnering with a program that Oklahoma schools already has in place. I also speak at banquets and attend dinners, I will MC pageants, I will make appearances to sign autographs and take pictures. Anything in Oklahoma that people are concerned or excited about that they want Miss Oklahoma to promote, partner with or advocate on behalf of, I’m available for. I’ll be doing a lot of traveling. I’ll actually be missing my family reunion, because I will be in Orlando to support our Outstanding Teen in her pageant. There will be some things that I will miss, but I like being busy with purpose—knowing that what I’m doing is making a difference.

EA: What is your official platform?Emoly: It is leadership and character

development, in partnership with Character First. They were started in 1991 at Kimray, Inc., an Oklahoma City based company. They were having a lot of problems with their employees. There was just overall discontentment. They had a high rate of workman’s comp claims, low productivity and low moral, just general discontentment. They realized that the root of the problem was the character of their employees. So they started implementing a character program with the employees and managers that emphasized personal character. From ‘91 to ‘92 their workman’s compensation cost decreased 80% and their profit increased 25%, in a down market.

They still have a business division, but they also created an educational curriculum that is based off of 49 character qualities. We teach people to emphasize the character in their lives and give them practical ways to implement it. If we require it in ourselves, then we start building character in ourselves, which helps us appreciate other people for doing the right thing, but also recognizing opportunities to correct bad character as well. Then we reward

and praise people for making the right choices. That’s how it works—emphasizing, requiring and rewarding.

In education it really helps too. I was a character coach, this past year, at two elementary schools. We go in and emphasize eight character qualities for two weeks. We would teach discernment, or compassion. We give them examples of how they can use discretion or compassion at school or at home. At the end of our time with them we give them a challenge and the next week we ask them how they did and then we will give them reviews. We encourage them to continue to do the right thing. With education it helps with academic excellence, because they start applying those character qualities into their school work and how they treat each other at home.

EA: High profile pageants, like Miss America, have a history of controversy. Sometimes the public speaking portion of the show doesn’t go so well for some of the girls and they end up being the hot topic on the cable talk shows. Does any of that make you nervous at all?

Emoly: I get nervous for girls, sometimes, when I hear them going down the wrong road. But then, other girls really surprise me. For me, I know that I’m going to be out on stage in front of a lot of people. But when I’m waiting backstage and it’s my time to go, I tell myself this is just like a conversation. I don’t have to have the best answer. I don’t have to knock their socks off. I just have to have something to say. If there is an opportunity to say something thought provoking, then I will. I won’t shy away from an opportunity to make a bold statement. I think some people over work it a little, and it doesn’t need to be as big of a deal. If you’re going to be a national title holder, you’ve got to be able to answer questions.

EA: Yes, but you could be totally ambushed with a controversial question and you answer could land you on the Nightly News.

Emoly: It really can get you in trouble. And who would have ever thought that by being honest and sharing your opinion that you could get into trouble. But that is the reality of this world. Probably one of the greatest lesson that I have learned is that I absolutely must know what I believe in. I must know what decisions I would personally make. I also must be able to recognize the time when to share what exactly I believe in. I also have to recognize when someone is wanting me to

Page 19: Edmond Active Issue 7

be honest and let them know how I feel about something. But I must be so diplomatic and respectful, not knowing what their opinion might be in the words I choose to express what I do believe.

EA: Man, that’s just like running for office.

Emoly: We’ve been running a campaign for six years. [Laughter] It is difficult. Like when Morgan [Woolard] was asked about illegal immigration [during the Miss USA pageant]. I sent her a message and I said that she represented Oklahoma well and that I was proud of her and I could tell that she was genuine.

[Editors Note: Morgan Woolard’s answer to the illegal immigration question was “I’m a huge believer in states’ rights. I think that’s what’s so wonderful about America. So I think it’s perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law. But I’m also against racial profiling, so I can see both sides.”]

EA: And then there was Carrie Prejean who was asked about gay marriage...

Emoly: She answered what she believed. Could she have said it a different way? Yes.

EA: How do you answer a question like that?

Emoly: You have to be as warm and as genuine and as loving as possible. But you have to say what you mean and not telling them something just to make them happy—I don’t think that’s what Miss Oklahoma, Miss America or Miss USA is all about. I don’t think that’s in the job description. When I answer a question I just want that person to know that I care and respect what their opinion is and if they want to know mine, I’m so free to share it. I have to be so secure in what I believe that I am opening myself up for people to criticize what I believe. If you have a state title or national title you represent everyone. You have to be mindful of everyone’s feelings, their life experiences and their choices, even if they are not your own.

EA: The Miss America pageant is a competition. Usually in a competition the competitors know each other. They have often times competed with them before, or have been able to research them. Do you know your competition that you will face in the Miss America pageant?

Emoly: Yes and no. I have met a couple of the girls and one of my friends is Miss Missouri. I was really happy when she won, because now

I will have a friend at the pageant. I have asked some former Miss Oklahoma’s what it’s like when you first meet all the contestants? The first thing they say is that you’re friends with everyone. Some of them you will click with right away and you’ll be friends forever and some you might stay at a distance. It’s going to be a learning process. There are ways that you can find out who they are, but I’ve refrained. I don’t need to find everyone on Facebook. The only person that I am in control of and the only one I should be concerned with is me. If I know where I am and I know what I’m doing and I know what I’m about, then I’ll be able to meet them.

EA: Give us an honest assessment of what you think your chances are in the Miss America pageant?

Emoly: Very, very good. Oklahoma is always a presence at Miss America. Having the last three years of going and watching the Miss America pageant, and having stuck to my goal since I was seven, I feel I have a very good chance of following through with what I’ve always said I would do.

Edmond’s biggest party of the year is, without a doubt, LibertyFest. The week-long celebration of our nation’s independence is packed full of family-friendly events that include the KiteFest at Mitch Park, Chalk It Up, a car show, road rally, the Miss LibertyFest Pageant and the Taste of Edmond. But the big draw of the week is always the LibertyFest Parade and fireworks show at UCO. This year the parade had more than 8500 participants and the crowd that lined the route was estimated at more than 40,000. It’s pretty safe to say that half the towns population was there.

The LibertyFest parade had all the usual parade fare—fire trucks, floats, beauty queens, politicians, clowns, Shriners, lots of Boy Scouts and synchronized motorcycle cops. Mother Nature must love a good parade too, because the skies were dark and gloomy during the precession, but didn’t unload until the parade was completely finished.

The crowning jewel of the LibertyFest celebration was the awesome fireworks display on the UCO campus. While fireworks shows all over the metro were being postponed, because of weather, the LibertyFest organizers decided to go on with the show. Mother Nature must also love a good fireworks show, because not a drop of rain fell during the display. And what a display it was! Edmond always has the best fireworks shows and this year was no exception. For over a half hour the bombs burst in mid air inciting oooh’s and awww’s from the large crowd. LibertyFest is just one more reason that Edmond is a great place to live.

Oklahoma is famous – infamous, really – for its summer heat. It can get downright miserable here, with temperatures reaching into the triple digits and the heat index making things considerably worse for wear. It’s been known to get bad enough where people become desperate; so desperate, in fact, that they’re willing to shell out wads of their hard-earned cash to spend a few potentially-miserable hours standing in line at franchise water “amusement parks.”

Let’s face it, we’re plowing through a horrendous economy, and most people just don’t have that kind of paper to flippantly throw around anymore. In the age of cutting back and being smart about your purchasing decisions, it’s counterintuitive to go to places like White Water Bay and pay six dollars just for parking, and then anywhere between $28 and $31 dollars per person (depending on height) when you have way more affordable options here in town, namely: Pelican Bay Aquatic Center, Arcadia Lake and, slightly up the road, Mawi-151 Wakeboard Cable Park

(for the adrenaline junkies out there). First up is Pelican Bay Aquatic Center.

Pelican Bay is located next to Hafer Park on Bryant, and is probably the most fun place to go for the smallest amount of dough – especially if you have kids. It’s open seven days a week, but the hours change slightly depending on the day you decide to visit: Monday through Wednesday, the facility is open from 1 to 8 PM, Thursday and Friday, 1 to 7 PM, and on the weekend, 11 to 6.

What is there to do at Pelican Bay? Well, there’s the pool and splash pad, which together circulate an impressive 360,000 gallons of water. 43 lifeguards are in rotation currently, meaning there’s never a lapse in security at any given time. It’s perfect if you have smaller kids. Then there are the two waterslides: big yellow looping towers that lead off in many different directions from the top of a hill. Trails lead up to the top, and there’s no slow way down. There are practically no lines for the slide, and it’s pretty fun! There’s also a snack bar and bathhouse

if you need food or a place to clean off/relax.

What if you want something more than a day at the pool? There happen to be several different aquatic sports and exercise sessions available at Pelican Bay, like water polo, a swim team and aquatic aerobics, not to mention special events like Dive-in Movie Night.

How much is this all gonna cost me? Well, general daytime admission for adults is seven bucks a head. For kids under 6, it’s five dollars, and infants who can’t walk get in free. However, there is a twilight period that lasts a from 5 to 8 PM on Monday through Wednesday and to 7 PM on Thursday and Friday, and the admission price for the park between those hours is 5 dollars for kids and adults over the age of $6 and $3 bucks for 5 and under. Very, very affordable, no matter which way you look at it.

Second on our written tour of Edmond’s water attractions is Arcadia Lake, out on Route 66. This man-made lake, built in 1987 by the City of Edmond and the

If you’re willing to drive 9 miles up I-35 for some more extreme temperature relief, then Mawi-151 wakeboard cable park is the place for you. If you have a wakeboard and gear, it’s gonna cost you only $18 bucks to ride the cables for an hour. If, on the other hand, you’re just starting to wakeboard and you need equipment, it only costs $35 bucks for an hour to rent the gear and ride. For the whole day, plus board and gear, it’s only $77.50. There are also classes for beginners and those who want to get better. It’s a hassle-free, boat-free way to learn how to wakeboard! (Lessons run at $89 dollars for one, and $59 per added person.)

Army Corps of Engineers, sprawls out with opportunity, boasting 26 miles of shoreline, wooded camping areas, swimming, picnic pavilions, and of course, the lake itself. You can go boating, you can fish, heck, there are even swimming areas.

So, what else is there to do at Arcadia? Well, the options are varied and open. A day at the lake is inexpensive: it only costs about six dollars to enter the lake

area during the week (if you’re in a car) and seven on the weekend. If you have a personal watercraft, then you’re looking at another six or seven dollars, again depending on the day. If you want to camp out at one of Arcadia’s four parks and 140 campsites, it gets a bit more expensive, but the prices are still pretty low: Primitive campsites (those with no water or electrical hookup) run at between $14 and $19 dollars, “regular”

campsites (electrical and community water hookups) go for between $19 and $24 dollars and full hookup campsites, the most expensive, run between $24 and $29 bucks.

There are also single-day events, like the Kids All-American Fishing Derby in June, Arcadia Lake Sweep and Storybook Forest that offer more opportunities for family fun.

MAWI-151 CABLE PARK

On Saturday, August 28, Arcadia Lake will host the 2nd Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta. Basically, people from around Edmond will bring their own cardboard boats to show off and race. Boats can be a family affair or your own private project. There’s a registration form at http://www.edmondok.com/parks/rec/regatta. There’s only one major rule: The boat must be made out of corrugated cardboard. You can add as much (or as little) cardboard to your boat as you like. So get out in the garage, get those moving boxes down from the attic and go to town! (Must be willing to get a little wet.)

As a wedding planner one of the first questions I get from brides is can you help me with a wedding cake vendor? I tell my brides when choosing a cake vendor check their portfolio and make sure you have a tasting of their cakes, because if it looks good, but taste terrible you will regret hiring that vendor. Also, get references from the vendor of other brides that have used their service. Make sure you get a contract, this way you know the exact flavor and design of your wedding and grooms’ cake. Your contract should also include the number of tiers, size, servings, date, time and location

for the cake to be delivered and the cost. Don’t forget to include what the groom may like and want on his cake. I share with brides how important lighting is for their cakes. If you want it to stand out, then cake lighting makes all the difference for your wedding photos. I’ve been working with Mishelle Handy Cakes for the past four years and I love the way her cakes taste and look. She is a professional and she has been in the cake industry for seventeen years.

Mishelle Handy Cakes gives some tips concerning wedding cakes.

A bride should schedule appointments for her wedding cake as early as six to nine months out, depending on the date. I have some brides booking a year in advance. Every year some dates are more popular

and book up quickly. When a bride books an appointment

it is good to bring anything that inspires the bride for her cake. This can be colors, designs, pictures or swatches. I have some brides that bring a photograph of their dress, for design and color. We talk about the design and I begin to sketch out her custom cake. Having a guest count is very important in planning. This will determine how many layers the bride will want to use for her cake. Having a list of vendors is helpful and be ready to have the deposit if you chose to hold the date.

It is good for the bride to come knowing what style of wedding and reception she has planned: formal, casual, maybe a themed wedding. The wedding cake should be a reflection of the bride’s style. The groom’s cake can be formal or more playful as well.

I specialize in a wide range of flavors with butter cream icing. I make my butter cream fresh for every wedding. I also do a lot of chocolate work, truffles, hand rolled chocolate curls, etc. I have anything from Italian cream cakes with a raspberry filling to french vanillas with Kahula cream filling. I offer 10 flavors of cake and fun fillings that compliment them.

Some of the popular trends in wedding cakes are brides going outside the box incorporating new contemporary designs

and choosing unusual stands for the cakes to be displayed on. Black and white cakes are still popular. Gold is huge this year, I hand paint gold accents on the cakes and complete the look with a gold cake stand. The handmade gum paste flowers on the wedding cake are back. They can be hand painted and larger for a contemporary look or used in a more traditional way, always romantic. Incorporating an aspect of the bride’s gown and using it in her cake design is very popular. I have a “Cake Couture gallery” and have started showing some of the cakes with the bride in her gown. This

displays how the cake matches the design of the brides wedding gown.

Picking out the wedding cakes is one of the highlights in planning process. It should be pleasant experience and you should love the cakes you choose! To learn more you can visit my website at www.mishellehandycakes.com
