Dear Working Wise:
A co-worker is picking on me for no reasontelling lies about me to other people and
saying that Im not good at my job. I love my job, but I hate going to work now and Im
thinking of quitting. I dont know what to do, should I tell the boss? Signed Bullied
Dear Working Wise:
Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise
Dear Bullied:
Many adults think that bullying is a problem that only occurs in the school-yard, but unfortunately there are workplace bullies as well. Workplace bullying is a serious problem that aects everyone in the workplace.
People who experience bullying behaviors in the workplace can have increased stress, health problems and family problems in addition to: lower productivity, higher absenteeism and higher sta turnover. One study found that employees experiencing bullying spend up to half their time at work dealing with the bullying and canvassing their co-workers for moral support.Workplace bullying can be hard for others to recognize and can involve a variety of behaviours from negative gossip and unfair criticism to oensive jokes and tampering with personal belongings.
There are laws against some extreme types of bullying, including:o Bullying someone on any grounds protected under Albertas Human Rights Act, such as race, religion, disability, or sexual orientation (www.albertahumanrights.ab.ca).o Violence or threats of violence can be investigated by Occupational Health & Safety (http://work.alberta.ca/ohs) and the police.
The majority of research in bullying has found that the best way to reduce bullying is to focus on promoting healthy relationships. Healthy relationships are created by promoting communication, respect, trust and support.
Employers can promote healthy workplace relationships by:o Asking leadership to model the way lead by example.o Including zero-tolerance on bullying in their corporate values.o Explaining to sta how bullying behavior contravenes the organizations values.o Establishing and communicating a zero-tolerance policy and procedure for reporting/resolving workplace bullying.
The Government of Alberta recognizes that Bullying is a serious issue and has released Albertas Plan for Promoting Healthy Relationships and Preventing Bullying. The plan outlines Albertas strategic approach to prevent bullying and includes many strategies focused on promot-ing healthy workplace cultures.
Government also oers resources to assist Albertans who are experiencing workplace bullying.Try visiting www.bullyfreealberta.ca or calling the Bullying Helpline: 1-888-456-2323.
The ALIS website (http://alis.alberta.ca) also oers tip sheets on bullying: Bullies at Work: What to Know, What You Can Do Employers: What You Need to Know About Bullying in the Workplace
Coworkers can play an important role in eliminating bullying in their workplace. Wednesday, February 25, 2015 is Pink Shirt Day. You can help send the message that bullying behavior is no longer acceptable by getting everyone in the oce to wear a pink shirt that day. You can make it even more fun by sharing your Pink Shirt oce photos on Twitter using the hashtag #albertapink.
