Engineering Design Process

You tube video

Independent/Dependent Variable

• Independent variable: the thing you are CHANGING in the experiment

• Dependent variable: what happens as a result of this change

ex) I want to know which detergent works the best so I was the same tee shirts with the same mustard stain for the same amount of time. I was 1 shirt with Tide and the other with Gain. • What is the independent variable?• Dependent variable?

Setting Up Experiments

• You can only change 1 thing at a time!!!!

Sponge bob examples

• Flower power: what did he do wrong?

• Microwave Miracle: – What is the control?– What is the ind. Variable?– What is the dep. Variable?

Reading a table/chart/graph

• Always read the title and any info that they give you

• Look at what is being compared• Figure out the relationship between what is

being compared– Ex)as one goes up, the other goes down OR they

are both going up OR they are both going down

Graph/table practice

• See sample TCAP question #2

• Identify the graph that matches each of the following stories: • I had just left home when I realized I had forgotten my books so I

went back to pick them up. • Things went fine until I had a flat tire. • I started out calmly, but sped up when I realized I was going to be

late.

Bias

• An experiment is biased if:1. The research was not done well

Too many variablesNot enough trials

2. The researcher has a personal connection with the experiment

See #30 on document reader

bioengineering

• engineering mixes with living things• Can be assistive or adaptive• assistive= helps organisms do things better

(pace maker, contact lenses, crutches)• Adaptive= changing a product or process to

work for certain disabilities ex) computer keyboard that works by a person tapping it with a tube

Flow Chart *must know*

• Cellstissueorganorgan systemorganism

Body Systems

• Respiratory: oxygen in, carbon dioxide out• Cardiovascular: pumps blood through body• Endocrine: glands released hormones

(adrenaline)• Nervous: controls everything, sends messages

through body• Integumentary: skin, nails, hair (protects body)• Muscular: helps you move• Skeletal: supports your body and movement
