This lesson situates in the second half of a 2.5 credit, semester-long course, so students will have developed background knowledge in health/personal safety issues as they relate to the 7 th grade standards as well as having 9+ weeks engaging in course topics via the Schoology LMS and utilizing Web 2.0 tools to present their work. Students admitted to the independent study program are required to be meeting or exceeding grade-level requirements in reading or have a support system in place (generally only students on IEPs). Instructional objectives: 1. Students will differentiate between conflict and violence. 2. Students will develop strategies for communicating during conflicts.

1. Overview

Program Title: Health 7 – Managing Conflict/Violence Prevention

Grade or age level(s): 7th grade

Major Goal: Students learn to manage conflicts, including when to seek adult help, to prevent them from escalating to violence.

Amount of Time to Learn the Content: 1.5 hours

System Requirements: Microsoft Windows XP SP2, 512M RAM, 56k dial-up, Flash player 7.0, audio card, and speaker.

2. Program Description

Characteristics of Target Learners:

Students are 7th grade students in the Davis Joint Unified School District who are taking Health 7 as an online class through Davis School for Independent Study. All DSIS students complete the majority of their work at home, meeting for one hour each week with their supervising teacher at the school. This lesson situates in the second half of a 2.5 credit, semester-long course, so students will have developed background knowledge in health/personal safety issues as they relate to the 7th grade standards as well as having 9+ weeks engaging in course topics via the Schoology LMS and utilizing Web 2.0 tools to present their work. Students admitted to the independent study program are required to be meeting or exceeding grade-level requirements in reading or have a support system in place (generally only students on IEPs).

Instructional objectives:

1. Students will differentiate between conflict and violence.

2. Students will develop strategies for communicating during conflicts.

3. Students will recognize when conflict is getting out of control.

4. Students will identify signs that conflict may become violent and how/where to get help.

5. Students will indicate ways to avoid situations that increase risk of violence.

6. Students will employ strategies for controlling anger and protecting themselves from violent situations.

File Name: 511_Simms_Conflict_and_Violence.swfScreen Description: L1 Recognizing Conflict

Text Outline: Content will be summarized from this section of the textbook chapter (p. 198)

Everyone experiences conflict; it’s what happens when there is any clash of ideas or interests.

The first step in solving a conflict is being able to recognize when it is about to happen. Look for three signs:Disagreement – Emotions – Behavior –

Work Space: (Rough sketch of the page)“Conflict” will tween down to rest at the bottom of the screen, indicating the title of lesson 1 (matching the textbook)“Lesson 1” button will remain shaded to indicate placement within the courseware. Hovering over a lesson button will display the outcomes each student should be able to demonstrate after completing the lesson. (see notes on storyboard 2 of 38 for details)

Text will be broken into pieces corresponding to each section of the lesson within the chapter. This reduction in the amount of text will support student focus and make it easier for students who are required to take notes to be supported in doing so (primarily students on IEPs).

Arrow button will move learners to the next section of content within the lesson.

Learners will engage in rich, multimedia presentation of scenarios. They will include video and/or audio components or animations to make them as real as possible. For example, students may be asked to listen to an audio narration of a student describing a situation and asking for advice, or watch video or an animation of an incident and asked to identify next steps or what should be done differently.

Clickable responses will allow learners to choose what they would do; upon click, the outcome related to that choice will be delivered, also in rich, multimedia format. If a student wants to repeat the scenario to try a different response, s/he can use the “try again” button to replay the scenario and choices.

Additional Notes: Jen McNeill has agreed to meet at the beginning of November to consult on script content. She has already shared via email some related content.

Possible situations for scenario: Joe’s friend Matt is furious over being cut from the baseball team.
