CROSSWALK CAUTION: MAKE YOUR TRIP TO THE PARKS A SAFE ONE!

Robert Herking Board member

since 2014

Many recent community improvements have contributed to making

Anderson Township a great place to live, work, and play. One improvement that stands out is the well-received Anderson Trails network of sidewalks which have significantly increased pedestrian access throughout the community, specifically to the parks.

As more people than ever are trekking to the parks from surrounding neighborhoods, a frequently asked question is what can be done to make the crosswalks safer.

Unfortunately, townships have limited authority over state and county roads (Clough Pike and Salem Road, respectively). While officials work together to make our crosswalks safer, one thing we can do immediately is raise awareness of the laws, for the benefit of drivers and pedestrians.

According to Ohio law:

DRIVERS must yield to pedestrians when they are crossing the same side of the road on which the car is traveling. Vehicles are not required to yield to pedestrians standing at the curb. However, please be courteous when you see a pedestrian waiting to cross the street. When a vehicle is stopped at a crosswalk (marked or unmarked) or at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway, the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear should never overtake and pass the stopped vehicle.

PEDESTRIANS have the right of way in a marked crosswalk. They may not step in a crosswalk when a vehicle is too close to stop, in order to avoid a hazardous situation. Pedestrians should remember that it is always safest to make sure vehicles inside your path are stopped and have seen

you before entering the road in a crosswalk. Always walk your bike when in a crosswalk, and keep children (and pets!) close.

Walkability is truly an asset to our vibrant community and it helps attract new residents. It also goes hand-in-hand with the healthy lifestyle activities your Anderson parks help to provide.

So as we continue to grow as an active community, drivers, walkers, wagon-pullers, and bicyclists should all do their part in order to have a safe journey, wherever you’re headed this summer!

CHANGES TO FALL RUN EVENT The Run to Remember 5K event has been renamed the Celebration to Remember. This yearly event features a walk through Beech Acres Park and a celebration with food, drinks and music.

This special event began with the family and friends of Nancy Horn – a loving wife and mother – after she lost her battle with brain cancer in 2003. After the first year, the Horn family invited others to nominate a loved one to be honored at this event. Today, the event has grown to celebrate almost three dozen individuals. The Celebration to Remember gives you a unique opportunity to honor the life of a loved one and create a legacy in their memory through fund raising for the Anderson Foundation for Parks & Recreation Playground Fund. The park district is currently accepting nominations for honorees for the 2014 event set for Saturday, Sept. 6.

For details on how to nominate your loved one, please visit AndersonParks.com.

YOUTH SPORTS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Not all youth who want to play sports in an Anderson Township Park District league have the means to do so. Thanks to family and friends of the late Jim Grabowski, players who have financial constraints can apply to the Jim Grabowski Memorial Fund for Fun for assistance. The fund offers youth the opportunity to play sports in a park district league or program.

Jim, a fun-loving and loyal husband, father, and friend, passed away suddenly in 2011 at age 44. As a volunteer he enjoyed coaching kids — including his three children — and investing in young athletes. Scholarship recipients are encouraged to volunteer at least five hours at a park district event or program.

Visit AndersonParks.com to apply for a scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded based on the number of applicants and the amount of funding available.
