Teacher’s Responsibility2

The goals of education require teacher to restructure the aspects of human capital development.

Human capital development program is the second most vital with the aim to improve the capacity and share knowledge, foster students to acquire skills, skills and discipline.

Teachers need to provide the best educational curriculum in order to develop students' skills, which is also the country's leading human capital.

Development efforts need to be made as a whole, which covers the needs of physical, cognitive, emotional and even spiritual. These aspects need to be developed in a balanced way, just like the one proposed in our national educational philosophy.

Teacher’s Role in School

Primary school teachers need to be closer to their students and act as a substitute parent, mentors, behaviour modifier, social agents, researchers and practitioners, other than practising and delivering academic knowledge and skills.

1. Teacher as Knowledge and Skill Practitioners

Practitioner is someone who practices a learned profession.

Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness, or understanding of someone or something, such as facts, information, descriptions, or skills, which is acquired through experience or education by perceiving, discovery, or learning.

Teachers need to adopt the attitude to 'learn to teach‘ to constantly enhance the acquisition of knowledge through various means such as: Doing lots of reading Conducting research Attending courses / seminars / forums Collaborate with colleagues Demonstrating openness to all

knowledge opportunities.

Based on the Conceptual Model of Teacher Education…

A good teacher should practices:a) Valueb) Knowledgec) Skill

b) Knowledge

It consists of: General knowledge Subject knowledge Teacher’s professional knowledge:

The teacher must encounter… Pedagogical skill:

The principles and methods of instruction, that impart knowledge or skill to the learners.

In other words, it is about how the teacher teaches in school, including the teaching and learning process and classroom management.

Generic skill: During the teaching and learning process, the teacher

should integrate all elements of the following skills: Thinking skills Communication skills ICT skills Study skills Assess skills etc.

2. Teacher as Supervisor/Advisor/Guide

Guidance can be defined as direction or helpful suggestions regarding a decision or future course of action.

In the context of education, Crow and Crow(1983) stated that, guidance refers to the provision of assistance or aid that are given to students.

Sherzer and Stone defines guidance as coaching services to individuals to achieve understanding, knowledge and skills.

Teacher’s Role as Supervisor

Cultivate interest and motivation towards the subject in order to improve student performance.

Help students identify their strengths and weaknesses as well as interest in their respective fields, so that potential students can be optimized.

Identify and assist students who are experiencing problems of education, socio-emotional and health in order to make personal adjustments (socially, emotionally, mentally and physically).

Teacher guides students to become positive people in order to contribute something to society.

Approaches that need to be considered by teachers in

discharging their responsibilities as supervisor:

1. Students’ development in personality and positive self concept.

2. Guidance as prevention.

3. Guidance for remedial.

4. Guidance to consult life crisis.

3. Teacher as Reflective Practitioner

Reflective: Deeply or seriously thoughtful.

Richard, JC: Reflection refers to the activity or process involving an experience collected, considered and evaluated for a particular purpose.

What is reflection in the teaching context?

Reflection in the teaching context refers to the process of inquiring any habit/ behaviour

critically and continuously refining it.

Why reflective thinking is so important?

It helps the teachers to… Make their own self-assessment Think analytically, critically and

creatively Analyse the important things to work See alternatives in decision-making Find a solution To change behaviour

Reflection and Teaching Profession

Kolb (1984) stated that reflection plays an important major role in the transformation of experience into knowledge.

Reflective thinking in teaching is associated with the work of Dewey (1933, 1938), who suggested that reflection begins with a dilemma.

Effective teachers suspend making conclusions about a dilemma in order to gather information, study the problem, gain new knowledge, and come to a sound decision. This deliberate contemplation brings about new learning.

4. Teacher as Researcher

The culture of doing research and writing (recording) it down must be nurtured among the teachers to improve their professional development and act in a professional manner.

To increase one’s professionalism, the person must know…- what’s going on- why things are happening that way- how are we going to resolve the problem.

The Aims of Doing Research

To discover the situation and problems in educational practices or social problems of pupils who require follow-up action to address the problems that arise.

To modify teaching and learning strategies attract students.

Characteristics of Research

To provide teacher researchers with a method for solving everyday problems in schools to improve both student learning and teacher effectiveness

To develop the professional disposition of teachers Encourage teachers to be life-long learners

To incorporate into a teacher’s daily routine a reflective stance The willingness to look critically at teaching so it can

be improved

5.Teacher as Social Agent

Socialization: The action of establishing on a socialist basis. The adoption of the behaviour patterns of the

surrounding culture.

Socialization process requires an individual to learn and accept the values, attitudes, skills and roles from the surrounding to shape their personality and integrate it into communities.

By teaching and modeling socialization to children, children will learn the meaning of kindness and generosity. They will then be able to eventually go out into society

and contribute in a positive, meaningful and productive way.

Teachers are able to incorporate socialization through so many different strategies/activities throughout the day: Sitting arrangement: promotes cooperation among

students Lesson planning : expose the student to different

culture
