Envisage viewing a demonstration of the age-old art of coopering, viewing a shark dissection or tackling the fun rides at Ushaka Marine World. These are just a few of the activities that form part of the educational tours organised by Edu School Tours, an established, experienced tour company that specialises in educational, leadership and adventure tours and excursions in South Africa.Go to page 148 to find out how we take away classroom walls and give learners hands-on exposure to nature, environmental issues, industry, science, history and different cultures.

MARSHALL MUSIC
LEXMARK EDUCATION STATION

COMPUTERS & TECHNOLOGY
Education through ConnectionToday’s school pupils are growing up in the digital age: they are part of a “connected generation” that uses technology to communicate and collaborate with friends, family members, and the world around them. They communicate and learn differently than previous generations, yet in many countries around the world, including South Africa, pupils in some schools are still asked to disconnect their digital devices upon entering the classroom. In the US, for example, things are done differently: pupils are becoming more connected as a result of technology introduced in the classroom. The use of technology in the classroom brings opportunities to students and opens a window to the world of knowledge beyond the classroom, thereby helping them develop the skills necessary to prepare and qualify for the competitive nature of business. Thus, local schools need to re-evaluate how students are taught. Technology needs to be incorporated into teaching and learning - and transforming education as we know it.
Simply adding computers to the classroom is not enough to impact pupils’ achievements. To truly transform education for the digital age, schools need to focus their vision on student learning and unite the entire school community to prepare pupils for future success.
Transforming teachingDell believes technology can help every pupil reach their highest potential. Dell’s Connected Classroom for Schools is a strategy that brings together every member of the education system, empowering each to play a key role in its success. It helps school
systems address the needs of teachers interested in understanding how technology can be infused into the classroom to enhance their own teaching methods, transform learning, and help increase student achievement. Dell works with the school to help them redefine learning; modernise the computing infrastructure; to maximise operational and cost efficiencies; and find practical ways to steer more of their technology budget towards the classroom.
When a classroom is a connected classroom, teachers have the opportunity to transform the way they teach, engaging pupils in the manner that they prefer to learn - interactively.
Breschia House integrates the Connected ClassroomA pilot study of the connected classroom in South Africa was conducted with the Grade 10 pupils at Brescia House School in 2011.
According to Lyneth Crighton, ICT Co-ordinator at Brescia House School, “the school needed an IT vision. Integrating digital learning in school is integral – everything is changing and this generation is different, we are teaching these pupils for the future and need to empower them as such.”
In 2009, Brescia House School decided to visit the US to investigate how schools there were integrating technology into the classroom to facilitate the learning process. They discovered that some of these schools were already 13 years into the programme. They studied how the schools used the

COMPUTERS & TECHNOLOGY
technology and the impact that this had on learning. Upon returning to South Africa, they compiled a list of everything they thought would be necessary to implement their strategy based on the pupils’ needs.
This led to the challenge of finding a local technology vendor that would be able to provide the complete solution and not just be a box-dropper. Brescia House School sought to find an IT vendor that would:• Be able to provide laptops that would be functional for up to four
years for the pupils at an affordable price; • Install the necessary Windows software and Brescia House
School’s own applications so that the machine is functional straight out of the box;
• Provide 24/7 aftersales support.
Brescia House School approached various IT vendors in the country with their “shopping list” to see who could best deliver on these criteria. After much research, they determined that Dell’s Connected Classroom best met their needs. “Dell came to the school, looked at our infrastructure, tried to understand our needs and provided a solution based on this” says Crighton.
Journey of learning The pupils were introduced to the laptops at a three day workshop hosted by the school. This three day workshop dubbed ‘The journey of learning’ was based on Cry the Beloved Country, which was part of the Grade 10 2011 English syllabus. During the course of the workshop, the pupils were encouraged to use Facebook, Twitter, Skype, YouTube, instant messaging using their smartphones , music, word tag clouds, etc. as they ‘journeyed’ through the set book giving their students a new way of looking at Cry the Beloved Country while using technology.
Crighton says, “It’s not what you know, it’s how you use this to create new knowledge. The pupils were already practicing and applying what they had learnt and, more importantly, they were sharing their knowledge with each other and helping each other find solutions.
It is like when you drop a colour in water and watch it spread”.
According to English teachers at the school, they have never seen such a solid foundation and understanding of the novel before. When encouraged to use social media to understand the story, they found that pupils were able to identify the parallels with minimal assistance from teachers and understand what the book truly means and represents. Most pupils chose to read the book voluntarily after the project. Changing livesThe introduction of the connected classroom has truly changed the lives of these pupils. The pupils are more engaged in the classroom and use social media for research and to learn more immediately, rather than having to look it up later. As a result, they are more organised than before: notes are not lost and the calendars and sticky notes help to ensure that deadlines are met. Homework is also completed more quickly and in a manner that allows each pupil to express their individual creativity. Access to the school’s wireless facility makes it easy for pupils to work from anywhere in the school - including the outdoors during break time. Crighton cites an example of a pupil whose mother rather reluctantly bought into the concept, until the day that they were stuck in a three hour traffic jam and her daughter took out her laptop and completed the bulk of her homework during this time.
“Modern knowledge is all about collaboration to achieve an end. The connected classroom is a complete revolution and school, educators, pupils and parents alike need to immerse themselves in this initiative and commit wholeheartedly to the project. Teachers need to now start looking at the message from a pupil’s work and its actual contents versus how it is packaged. It is about being open minded and using progressive thinking skills to show that pupils understand; and you have achieved your teaching outcomes” concludes Crighton.

COMPUTERS & TECHNOLOGY
Technology can put the spark back into SA’s classroomsAs the debates around matric pass rates and the numbers of maths and science students in South Africa rage on, one thing is certain: we need to actively create as many opportunities as we can for young people to get the 21st century skills they need to live and work in a global economy.
Asking tough questionsAcross the country, school leaders, parents and education stakeholders are asking tough questions: How can we make learning more accessible and relevant? How can we engage the natural desire of students to learn? How can we prepare our young people adequately for a successful future?
These are questions that need to be confronted right now. The US-based National Science Foundation estimates that up to 80% of the jobs created in the next decade will require some mastery of technology, maths and science. A recent McKinsey study shows that two-thirds of those jobs don’t even exist today.
Overcoming historic inequalitiesOne of the tools that can help us is right under our noses: technology. This is the single biggest weapon we have to help improve teaching and learning in our classrooms, and help overcome historic inequalities in our education system.Using technology, teachers can breathe new life into relevant lessons. They can geo-locate a region on a historical map and integrate videos and music
clips. Learners can take digital photos and make their own documentaries.
The possibilities really are endless – and research shows learners respond better to this type of learner-centred, creative teaching style.
Affecting student behaviour A growing body of studies suggests that once technology appears in the classroom, there is an almost immediate improvement in student behaviour.
They become more attentive in class, are more willing to speak up during lessons, start coming in to school early, and get more homework done.
Cloud computing is one area of technology that holds great promise for education. Essentially, cloud computing is all about providing content and services through the internet (the cloud). With content or e-learning resources hosted in the cloud, there is nothing that prevents learners from accessing material from home, if they have a suitable device – and that doesn’t have to be a notebook or a PC.
Today, learners can use mobile phones to access and share educational material, with several examples of mobile-based programmes that help learners with subjects like Mathematics and Science.

COMPUTERS & TECHNOLOGY
Multi-device access and learningTeachers can create learning opportunities across multiple devices, including mobile phones. They can share e-Libraries, e-textbooks and workbooks, create curriculum resources, record lessons and publish them online in class sites in the cloud where students are able to view, open, produce, edit and share their homework.
Cloud-based technology even allows school IT departments to save money and free up critical time by counting on external providers to manage routine tasks such
as applying server updates and software upgrades.
But it’s not just about the technology. Our education system will not be miraculously
transformed by giving schools computers,
and training teachers how to use them. It’s about bringing innovation to learning, teaching and the management of education. How do you personalise the education experience?
How do you incorporate new modes of classroom design and curriculum, or think
about assessment differently? How do you change a learner’s vision of his or her future?
Once we answer those questions, though, we’ll find technology to be not only a dynamic way to deliver interactive educational resources, but also the first line in teaching fundamental information and communication technology s§kills that will help learners develop and become more creative and productive when they enter the workforce.

Information Technology (IT) has revolutionised our world and children today have little idea of how communications happened before the internet, texting, Mxit, YouTube and instant messaging. It’s how they are wired.
While parents and educators are aware of the IT revolution, they fail to recognise how pervasive it is. It is the lingua franca, the language of the day. Kids ‘switch on’ to anything IT related and the power of IT and its appeal must be used in the classroom to achieve the goals of education.
We became aware of this dilemma when we, like many other parents, experienced the frustration in trying to help our children with their language learning. They attend a good school with great leaders and great educators – but often they were just ‘switched off’, even though their marks were ‘OK’. Daily we were struggling through the worksheets the children had to work through to build their vocabulary.
It was a major source of friction and we just knew that there had to be a better way. A way that would give them the tools to master a language working at their own speed and in their own time - and could maybe add some fun.
We realised that we needed to appeal to kids using technology that they are familiar with, and organise their language learning to make it easier for them to manage their work in bite size chunks. Having developed IT systems for businesses and governmental organisations for many years, we also recognised that we needed to work with the language educators to understand their requirements and how best to support the learning process.
The first programmes were created to help our own children master their Afrikaans and isiZulu learning and almost immediately the friction disappeared. Now they were in charge of determining when to tackle their language homework and could build up their vocabulary by testing themselves on their spelling.
We demonstrated these programmes to the school’s language teachers and the immediate request was for these to be developed into a resource that the school could use. Whuzoo was then established and the programmes were enhanced with pronunciations for all the words and phrases in the wordbase. We worked closely with the school’s language teachers to identify
which aspects of the syllabus would benefit from using interactive technology and the computer program was put on a CD for learners to use in their home computers.
The concept was a hit and parents and teachers experienced the same results we had – the learners marks improved as did their attitude towards learning. Parents and teachers could also see how the children had ‘switched on’ to language learning and how their confidence grew.
The initial programmes for the grade 4-7 Afrikaans and isiZulu syllabuses showed encouraging results and the school requested that we broaden the reach and that we engage with associate and feeder schools.
The results were equally encouraging.
Where the programmes are endorsed by the school management and language head as a required resource for the relevant language syllabuses, the kids flourish.
The ‘partnership in language learning’ fosters the collaboration that is essential to language learning, and allows everyone to identify areas for improvement or suggest ideas to enhance it - parents, language specialists, the learners and ourselves.
The language learning initiative is still in its infancy, but its continued growth bears testimony to the fact that the innovative use of IT can help kids with their language learning – and with others areas of education, too.
Please view the website for more information and get in touch so that we begin the language learning journey with you.

Using technology to help kids learn languages
Simply put, there is not enough time to build a strong vocabulary in class. Learners need to spend a lot of time working on their own to be comfortable with the words, phrases and sentences. They also need to hear the pronunciations to use the vocabulary in conversation.
Whuzoo language programmes provide an interactive computer application which lets the learner continue their language learning beyond the classroom. Learners use the programme CD on their home computer or school media lab - and are able to master the language in a fun way!

GreeNsChoolThe greenSCHOOL printer cartridge collection programme is an initiative by greenOFFICE to assist schools in recycling used printer cartridges. Cartridges that end up in landfill sites pose a great danger to our natural environment and the manufacturing of new cartridges threatens our natural resources. Schools across the country have the opportunity to contribute to a sustainable and green planet by selling their collected empty cartridges to greenOFFICE.
The greenSCHOOL programme is developed specifically with the needs of schools in mind. The simplicity of the program is arguably one of its major benefits.
When a school signs up to the programme, greenOFFICE delivers cartridge collection boxes to the school and picks them up as soon as a collection is needed. This service is provided at no cost to the school and there are no administrative fees involved.
As a fundraising initiative, greenSCHOOL has assisted schools in raising close to R40,000. Together with its mascot, Captain Cartridge, greenSCHOOL visits schools to educate them on the benefits of recycling used printer cartridges. The greenSCHOOL team gladly assists schools in spreading this message to parents and the local community in an effort to support their school. Schools also receive environmental certificates,
which state their environmental savings. The bimonthly greenSCHOOL newsletter also shares all the latest
news and upcoming events.

AdoPt-A-sChooL FouNdAtioNThe Adopt-a-School Foundation was formed in 2002 with the vision to support the creation and
enhancement of conducive teaching and learning environments in disadvantaged schools.
Over the last 10 years the Foundation has inspired both businesses and individuals in the private sector
to invest effectively in education through our model of Whole School Development. Whole School
Development is a holistic model aimed at improving the academic, infrastructural, social and security
environment in schools. Our interventions aim to provide schools with important resources which
include: leadership, communication, governance, strategic planning, quality of teaching, educator
development, school safety, security and discipline, health and wellness, learner support systems in
Mathematics, Science, Literacy and Accounting, counselling and social welfare, extra and co-curricular
activities, parental volunteerism, maintenance of school structures and infrastructure development.
To date, over 150 schools have been assisted throughout South Africa and over 200 thousand learners
are currently benefiting from our interventions.
Autism south AFriCA Every hour a child with Autism is born in South Africa. Some 8000 autistic children will be born in South Africa this year : 638 new cases a month, 160 per week, 23 per day.
As the National Body for children and adults with autism we strive to ensure a meaningful quality of life for people with Autism Spectrum Disorders. We achieve this by working to increase government support and services for affected people and their families, through research, by increasing awareness, and through a comprehensive portfolio of activities. Throughout the country in established and historically neglected areas our officers meet with parents, set up support networks, visit ECD centres, special-need schools, clinics and hospitals, arrange training sessions with teachers and other professionals and lobby for support and services with national and provincial government.
We host monthly screening clinics, deliver education sessions, and have developed a “First Aid” toolkit to provide teachers with autism-friendly, basic skills and classroom strategies.

help2read is a child literacy organisation that uses adult volunteers to help primary school children become confident readers and learn to love books. It is based on the UK child literacy charity, Volunteer Reading Help. We recruit and train volunteers who work on a one-to-one basis with each child. Some 600 reading helpers are active in more than 100 schools in the Western Cape and Gauteng, improving the lives of some 1500 children.
Twice-weekly reading sessions last half an hour, and are entirely child-led. This helps increase children’s confidence and self-esteem. Volunteers are developed through effective, quality training, which continues with regular refresher workshops, updating of training manuals, book exchanges and the provision of guidance. Ongoing support and recognition helps keep volunteers committed to the programme.
The resources invested in volunteers empower them with additional skills and confidence. Books, games and other materials provided are quite different from the books the learner will see in the classroom and this system encourages a love of reading.
To get involved, either by donating, sponsoring a child or volunteering on the help2read programme, please contact us.

GREENFIELDS SPORTS TURF SYSTEMS provide durable fields
for top class school sport including hockey fields, soccer or five-
a-side pitches, tennis courts, driving ranges, cricket pitches and
even bowling greens. The company also promotes the conversion
of mini-pitches of 800sqm which can be used for multi-functional
sports combinations, for example basket-ball, netball, tennis
courts and mini hockey.
Artificial turf is increasingly finding favour with schools for
their all-year-round playing condition, with the permanent line
markings and an even flat surface providing the perfect pitch for
sport at relatively low maintenance costs. What’s more, is to be
competitive internationally and thus more and more institutions
have recognised the need of practising and training on world-class
sports fields, many of which are artificial.
No less than 42 institutions have taken advantage of these benefits
with St. John’s College and Roedean Girls in Johannesburg and
Bergvliet High School in Cape Town having recently completed
construction of unusual new blue GREENFIELDS hockey fields
as seen at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The blue pitch
specifically provides greater contrast against the yellow ball and
improves visibility for television coverage.
The commitment to provide world-class sports facilities is
admirably demonstrated by many educational institutions across
the country including Michaelhouse, Hilton College, Kearsney
College, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville Girls and
Pietermaritzburg Girls High in Natal, Westerford, Herschell and
Paarl Boys in Cape Town, Selbourne College in East London,
Alexander and Pearsons High Schools in Port Elizabeth, Rhodes
in Grahamstown, Outeniqua in George, Tshwane University,
St. Albans and St. Mary’s in Pretoria, as well as Beaulieu College,
Jeppe High and Vaal University of Technology in Johannesburg.
All of these establishments have installed GREENFIELDS SPORTS
TURF fields over the past three years and are using these multi-
use facilities for a variety of sports not only limited to hockey, but
also for Phys-Ed, junior rugby and soccer where the children play
barefoot.
GREENFIELDS SPORTS TURF SYSTEMS are the only locally
manufactured systems in South Africa and are available from
Belgotex Floorcoverings in Pietermaritzburg who provide full
service from feasibility studies, through to supply and construction.
Construction Wof such facilities is quick: from the first sod turning
to the installation of the 14mm E-layer and carpet the projects take
a mere 12 weeks to completion.

TOURS & EXCURSIONS [organisers]
Imagine spending a day driving through an awe-inspiring countryside, ascending Table Mountain, walking with a cheetah or lion cub, feeding a hippo and vulture or receiving a kiss from an elephant.
Envisage viewing a demonstration of the age-old art of coopering, going on a boat ride, walking in Madiba’s footsteps on Robben Island, viewing a shark dissection and dolphin show or having fun on the rides at Ushaka Marine World.
You may be surprised to find that the above describes but a few visits that form part of the educational tours organised by Edu School Tours.
Edu School Tours is an established, experienced tour operating company that specialises and focuses specifically on organising educational, leadership and adventure tours and excursions in South Africa.
Edu School Tours is owned and managed by Freddie and Magda Schoeman. We aspire to take away the classroom walls and give learners hands-on exposure to nature, environmental issues, industry, science, history and different cultures to name but a few.
We are proudly South African and believe in showcasing our beloved country’s beautiful landscapes, innovative people, diverse cultures and exceptional history.
We strongly believe in excellent service delivery and our customers regularly comment that they received much more than they anticipated. Tours and day excursions are tailor-made to the school’s specific requirements.
We offer:
• Our knowledge and experience in arranging and organising Educational School Tours and excursions
• The safety of your investment - Edu School Tours are bonded members of SATSA (Southern Africa Tourism Services Association)
• NB! An Edu School Tour facilitator will accompany the tour to facilitate the programme. This gives teachers the freedom to focus on the children
• We have Public Liability Insurance of R5 million per incident off the bus
• We use only the most reliable bus companies for transport. These companies have Passenger Liability Insurance
