The Value of CME

For decades, regularly conducted studies have demonstrated the e ects of CME on improving clinical care and patient health. With advances in medical practice and the increasing complexity of the healthcare system and practice environment, expectations for CME have become more rigorous, as have methods for measuring and reporting on its e ectiveness. What began as a means to ensure that physicians engage in postgraduate education has evolved as a method to improve overall healthcare system quality.

A review of 105 articles in the scientifi c literature showed that continuing education—especially when it incorporates multimedia or multiple education techniques—is e ective in improving physician performance.* In addition to its proven e ectiveness, CME is preferred by physicians over promotional activities when seeking new methods to incorporate into their practice. In a survey of 2000 physicians representing 16 specialties, respondents said they were more likely to turn to educational sources than many other types of information, including pharmaceutical promotional meetings, medical science liaisons, or sales representatives.**

US physician participation in CME has reached and sustained a record level of roughly 12 million certifi cates issued per year.1

59% of U.S. adults have looked online for health information in the past year.3

At 33%, internet-based education represents the largest share of CME participation.1

One in three has gone online to obtain information about a medical condition.3

Two-thirds of physicians are “triple screen” users, meaning their daily use includes desktops, smartphones, and tablets.2

57% say they are more likely to look at WebMD versus government-a liated sites such as the CDC (17%) or FDA (16%).4

Physicians spend more than 9 hours per day across devices, and almost ½ of that on mobile.2

After doing so, 35% say they did not visit a clinician to get a professional opinion.3

Demand for online continuing medical education is up:

Consumers seek health information online from trusted sources:
