Educating Communities
Newsletter Week 5
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
After all of the excitement of the first three weeks of term, as of last week we are finally settling back into the routine of a regular school timetable. Having said that, however, thank you to everyone who supported the Student Parliament initiated Pyjama Day last week. It was a lovely opportunity to have a ‘comfy’ day at school as well as raise funds for a very worthy cause. I believe nearly $700 was raised - well done everyone! We have also hosted the next round of the public speaking competition and have students who have been successful in progressing to the next round. Congratulations to all students who participated! Maitland Group Sport New sport arrangements for students in Years 3 – 6 begin this week with the commencement of Maitland Group Sport, an opportunity for schools in the Maitland District to participate in sporting activities with and against each other. We have students participating in touch football, soccer, netball and boot camp. Students in Years 3 – 6 are either participating in Maitland Group Sport, which is held at Maitland Park, or participating in sports activities at school/King Edward Park. All sport will take place on a Thursday. Maitland Vietnam Veterans and Services Legion Offer The City of Maitland has the honour of giving 2 Squadron RAAF the freedom of the city being the 100th year since their formation. 2 Squadron is not only the oldest flying squadron but is also the most decorated. The Maitland Vietnam Veterans and Services Legion have invited our students to be in the Maitland Mall to witness this historic event and would very much like to have the students passively involved. To this end, they are offering vouchers for a hot dog and a small drink from one of the participating outlets in High Street. If you would like to attend the march and take advantage of this generous offer, students may obtain their vouchers from Miss Dudgeon, with a note of intent to attend, signed by a parent or carer. The event will involve over 100 airmen and airwomen
marching down the mall from Bulwer St to the Maitland Town Hall where the formal ceremony will be conducted. The march will begin in the mall at 10:00am on Saturday, 10 September 2016. This will leave everyone plenty of time to also participate in the school Relay for Life team. (See article later in the newsletter). Term 3 Staff Development Day Variation Please remember that care arrangements will need to be made for students on Friday, 16 September 2016 as the school will be participating in a combined staff development day and staff will not be in attendance at school on this day. Mutual Banking Students need to drop their bank books off first thing Tuesday morning.
East Maitland Public School has registered to be part of
Maitland's Relay for Life 2016! Relay for Life is a chance
for communities to recognise and celebrate those who
have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, as
well as the people who care for them. Relay for Life also
provides an opportunity to remember the memory of
loved ones lost to cancer.
When: Saturday 10th September 2016
Where: Marcellin Park Lorn
Time: 10am-10pm
Cost: $20 per participant which includes a shirt and
breakfast on the day
Teams participate in a relay-style walk or run. There
just needs to be someone from the team to be on the
track at all times. There are no age limitations or fitness
requirements just lots of fun to be had supporting one
another. It is not compulsory to stay the entire day,
however, if you have no plans and wish to indulge on the
whole day experience by being great supporters of East
Maitland Public School and the Cancer Council then
please give it a go!
It would be great to get as many people from our school
community involved as we can. This is a wonderful
community event which will be loads of fun plus
supporting a wonderful charity. A few teachers have
already registered which is great to see! Invite family and
friends as this will be a great school community event!
The link below will take you directly to the team’s page
called 'EMPS students and families' where you can
register to be part of the team and/or donate to the
Cancer Council in support of our school team.

If you have any trouble accessing this link you can also
google 'Relay for Life' or go to the website
https://www.relayforlife.org.au
which is their home page. CLICK on 'register' and
you can find a team by typing in our team name
'EMPS students and families'. You can then follow
the prompts to register.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries. Mrs Cribb

The pitfall of using other children as benchmarks
Benchmarking children’s progress with that of other children is not a wise parenting strategy. Inevitably, it will lead to
parent frustration as there will always be a child who performs better than your own on any scale you use.
Have you ever compared your child’s behaviour, academic progress or social skills with a sibling or your friend’s
children?
Comparing your child with others is a stress-inducing and, ultimately, useless activity.
But it’s hard to resist, as we tend to assess our progress in any area of life by checking out how we compare with our
peers.
When you were a child in school you probably compared yourself to your schoolmates. Your teachers may not have graded
you, but you knew who the smart kids were and where you ranked in the pecking order.
Now that you have kids of your own do you still keep an eye on your peers? Do you use the progress and behaviour of their
kids as benchmarks to help you assess your own performance as well as your child’s progress? Or perhaps you compare
your child to yourself at the same age?
Benchmarking children’s progress with that of other children is not a wise parenting strategy. Inevitably, it will lead to
parent frustration as there will always be a child who performs better than your own on any scale you use.
Kids develop at their own rates
Each child has his or her own developmental clock, which is nearly impossible to alter. There are slow bloomers, early de-
velopers, bright sparks and steady-as-you-go kids in every classroom. The slow bloomers can cause the most concern for
parents who habitually compare children to siblings, their friends’ kids and even themselves when they were in school.
The trick is to focus on your child’s improvement and effort and use your child’s results as the benchmark for his or her
progress and development. “Your spelling is better today than it was a few months ago” is a better measure of progress
than “Your spelling is the best in the class!”
Gender matters
It’s no secret that boys’ and girls’ brains were developed by different architects. One major difference lies around tim-
ing, or maturity. The maturity gap between boys and girls is anywhere between 12 months and two years. This gap seems
to be consistent all the way to adulthood.
Quite simply, girls have a developmental head start over boys in areas such as handwriting, verbal skills and relationship
skills.
Boys benefit greatly from teaching strategies designed for their specific needs. They also benefit from having teachers
and parents who recognise that patience is a virtue when teaching and raising boys, as it seems to take longer for many
boys to learn and develop.
Kids have different talents, interests and strengths
So your eight-year-old can’t hit a tennis ball like Novak Djokovic, even though your neighbour’s child can. Avoid comparing
the two as your child may not care about tennis anyway.
It’s better to help your child identify his or her own talents and interests. Also recognise that the strengths and inter-
ests of a child may be completely different to those of his or her peers and siblings.
Avoid linking your parenting self-esteem to your child’s performance
As a parent you should take pride in your children’s performance at school, in sport or their leisure activities. Seeing your
child do well is one of the unsung pleasures of parenting. You should also celebrate their achievements and milestones,
such as taking their first steps, getting their first goal in a game or getting great marks at school.
However, you shouldn’t have too much personal stake in your children’s success or milestones, as this close association
makes it hard to separate yourself from them. It may also lead to excessive parental pressure for kids to do well for the
wrong reasons – to please you!
The maxim “You are not your child” is a challenging but essential parental concept to live by. Doing so takes real maturity
and altruism, but it is the absolute foundation of that powerful thing known as “unconditional love”.

P&C News Our school’s P&C is made up of a great team of volunteers of busy parents and carers. If you have a suggestion, an idea or a concern please email us, leave your contact details with the office ladies or come along to one of our meetings. Our next meeting is a night time meeting to allow those parents and carers who usually can’t make our day ones to come along. It will be held on Thursday, 8th September at 6pm in the school staff room.
We are constantly planning fundraising events throughout the year to be able to purchase items for our kids. New readers, iPads, comfy classroom mats, sharing the cost of the electronic school sign and sporting uniforms are some of the things we have purchased in the last 12 months. Future funding projects include wall art outside the library, a new cooktop and stove for the multi categorical unit, plus ongoing maintenance with the Garden Club. If you have an idea that you would like us to fundraise towards, please let us know. Email details: [email protected] Thanks to everyone’s assistance with various fundraising activities we were able to help our school footy team cover the cost of hiring a bus to take them to State Comp.
