What Is Your Secret Power?

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers. Charles William Eliot

Dear Parents/Carers

Book Week presents the perfect opportunity to reflect on all the great things that reading makes possible. The importance of reading cannot be underestimated. Recognising the benefits of reading and acknowledging the work of our wonderful Australian authors and illustrators is the main focus of Book Week. And this is why we embrace book week with such fervour at Sacred Heart. This year’s theme is Reading is my Secret Power.

A child's reading skills are important to their success in school as they will allow them to access the breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and language skills. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative time for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them.

The best-books-for-kids website captures the top ten benefits of reading.

1. Kids who read often and widely get better at it

2. Reading exercises our brains

3. Reading improves concentration

4. Reading teaches children about the world around them

5. Reading improves a child’s vocabulary and leads to more highly-developed language skills

6. Reading develops a child’s imagination

7. Reading helps kids develop empathy

8. Children who read do better at school

9. Reading is a great form of entertainment

10. Reading relaxes the body and calms the mind

In a society that is becoming more egocentric, it is great to see benefit seven reinforce that through reading children can develop empathy and build their understanding of the thoughts and feelings of others through reading.

I would like to acknowledge the incredible efforts of our literacy leaders Kathy Brick with the support of Jill Fisher, who

have planned an amazing program of events for our students to engage with the work of authors. Book readings,

writer’s workshops, book parade, book swap, library visits, author studies and activities don’t just happen – they take

a lot of work to organise. I would also like to thank our teachers for supporting this important program and for

modelling a love of reading for our students.

What difference can I make as a parent?

You can make a huge difference! Parents are the most important educators in a child’s life and it is never too early to

start reading together. Irrespective of whether your child is only just beginning to learn to read or whether they are

fluent, you can play an important role in helping to keep them interested in books. Find out what interests them, help

them to find books that will be engaging and fun, and spend time reading the books they bring home from school

together. This can continue well into secondary school, reading the book together and discussing its relevance in

school work.

The more that you read, the more things you know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go. Dr Seuss.

I couldn't have said it better myself!

Brian Martin
