In the Republic of Botswana, education financing is mainly the responsibility of the state; from basic education to tertiary level.
At tertiary level, the point system is used as a basis for screening the deserving candidates across all the disciplines
EDUCATION SYSTEM IN BOTSWANA
At tertiary level, the government sponsors students in both public and private tertiary institutions.
Currently there two public universities, several private colleges/universities and many vocational/tertiary institutions
The system of education is encouraging

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Student motivation is a key element in learning.Motivation influences the study approach
and eventually the conceptualization and understanding of the subject. There is not much evidence on what
motivates students at tertiary level in Botswana.

DEFINITION OF MOTIVATION
Motivation is defined as a psychological state that causes an individual to act a way that ensures the achievement of some goals.

Motivation explains why people behave in a certain manner
Thus motivation is an internal behaviour which involves the individual’s mental state.
MOTIVATION
Achievement motivation- Driven by the need to obtain a high grade.
Both intrinsic and extrinsically motivated students can be both high and low achievers.
MOTIVATION AND STUDY APPROACH
Study approach is linked to specific motivation
Intrinsically motivated students - deep approach to studying
Extrinsically motivated students - the surface approach to study.
METHODOLOGY
Quantitative research was used.
Cross sectional data was analysed.
Data was collected from low levelstudents
Data collected using questionnaires
Dummies were used to capture emotions
