Dropping Back In features half-hour programs which introduce some of America’s dropouts, the issues they face and the people and programs helping them drop back in and get on with their educations and lives. While they face similar struggles, each person’s story is unique, complicated, messy, revealing, and compelling. The result is a series of documentaries that are both enlightening and inspiring and include a diverse mix of people, programs, experts, and explanations. Airs Fridays 5am-6am beginning 1/16/15. See p. 11 grid for episode order. Episode 101 Second Chances - High school dropouts, educators, and researchers introduce the economic and personal costs of dropping out, why a high school equivalency is no longer enough, and the benefits of dropouts gaining second chances.

Episode 102 More Than A Statistic - The longer someone is out of school the less likely they are to go back. This program looks at programs designed to get young dropouts back on course. Episode 103 Complicated Lives - Why does it take many dropouts years to attain a high school equivalency? Why do so many former dropouts struggle in college? The challenges faced by many go far beyond academics. Episode 104 Working for the Future - In order for America's dropouts to attain college and career readiness, institutions must change. This program looks at innovative programs that are achieving success through working closely with employers to make sure students gain marketable skills; assisting underprepared college students and achieving retention and completion rates far beyond traditional community colleges; and a coalition of manufacturers and community colleges working to train much-needed workers that can help keep high-skills manufacturing in America.

Watch Online: America By the Numbers

“Surviving Year One

The story of infant mortality in Rochester and what is being done about it. Watch Online

America By the Numbers “Surviving Year One”, looks at the infant mortality rate in Rochester, NY. While the U.S. spends more on healthcare than any other nation, and the biggest portion goes towards pregnancy and childbirth, the nation ranks 56th lowest in the world for infant mortality. To find out more about this critical issue, series host Maria Hinojosa visits Rochester—where babies are dying at a rate almost twice the national average, and where mothers of color are two times as likely as white mothers to lose their babies before their first birthday. http://interactive.wxxi.org/highlights/2014/11/watch-online-america-numbers-surviving-year-one

HOMEWORK HOTLINE is also broadcast LIVE and carried on PBS television stations in New York State. How does it work?: A WXXI producer and cameraman will come to your school and set up their taping equipment in your Library. – Set up takes about 15-20 minutes. It should be a time when the library is not conducting classes - It really has to be QUIET—AND – Students participating in the book reviews do better when they don’t have an audience. Choose 5 to 7 students grades 4th and up (3

rd graders are

considered if you have students that you think are exceptional and not “shy” to the camera.) Students should have 1-2 minute prepared book reports – Students CAN read from their notes

Visual aids prepared by the student are welcome:

Students can dress up as the character of their book to

present their reviews

In the past, students have brought in drawings or other art

projects that are related to their book

WE ARE FLEXIBLE – CREATIVE IS GOOD!

If you participated last year—feel free to join in again this year!

Please be sure the student brings the book they are reviewing to the taping – we will need it to take pictures of the book.

Total taping for all students will be a couple of hours – it depends on how smoothly the students do their reviews. Some students might have to do the review twice – depending on their comfort level on camera. We want this experience to be a positive one and have the student present their reviews so that they feel comfortable with their performance.

Before the taping teachers and students are encouraged to tune into a Thursday night segment of HOMEWORK HOTLINE Book Reviews or visit http://homeworkhotline.org/ to see archived book reports to get an idea of what is expected of the student.

After the broadcast—WXXI will provide to your school one DVD copy of the HOMEWORK HOTLINE edited book report segments that features your student book reports.

Share A Student Book Review on Homework Hotline

While homework is often a big concern for students, it’s also a great way for parents to communicate with their child about what they are learning. A recent study found that interactive communication around homework, where students get help from family members, leads to more parent involvement in their school. Homework Hotline provides families with additional help and support for success with homework. Homework Hotline is WXXI’s live statewide call-in show where kids receive help with homework problems right on the air. Designed for children in grades four through 12, the program – which is now in its 24th season – provides the tools students need to succeed with homework, and supports academic achievement across a variety of New York State curriculum. Teachers from Dial-A-Teacher take the calls and send them to WXXI studios in Rochester, where host teachers, who are experts in subjects across the curriculum, are standing by ready to help kids work through their homework. In addition to providing homework help, Homework Hotline presents daily thematic segments on health, animals, book reviews, history, environment issues, and people and places in New York State. Homework Hotline sends out daily updates and helpful hints for the “Teaser” question on its Facebook page. http://facebook.com/HomeworkHotlineTV Homework Hotline airs Monday through Thursday at 5:30-6:00 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 and streamed live at: http://homeworkhotline.org/

Homework Hotline has received ten New York State Broadcasters Association Awards for best program or series designed for children, plus a 2010 My Source Education Innovation Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Silver Telly, Bronze Telly, and an Aurora Award. INSTRUCTIONAL TV HIGHLIGHTS

Overnight DT21.1/cable 11/cable 1221 broadcasts All programs have school year re-record rights unless noted.

Featured Series Gettysburg Story - tells the epic tale of the bloodiest battle ever fought on American soil and the greatest man-made disaster in American history. The documentary recounts the pivotal events and intimate stories from the iconic Civil War battle immortalized in Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address." Cutting-edge cinematography techniques reveal the grand scale of the 6,000-acre battlefield, including the legendary sites of Little Round Top, Devils Den, The Railroad Cut, Cemetery Ridge and the fields of Pickett's Charge. Airs 2/4 at 1-2 a.m.

A HARPIST'S LEGACY: ANN HOBSON PILOT AND THE SOUND OF CHANGE - http://annhobsonpilot.com/ profiles the inspirational life and distinguished career of the revered harpist. This compelling documentary follows Ann Hobson Pilot's trailblazing journey as the first black female principal player in a major symphony orchestra and also as an international soloist, teacher, mentor and driving force behind music-education programs for underserved minorities. Airs 2/11 at 1-1:30 a.m.

Lost Years of Zora Neale Hurston - Writer, folklorist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, a celebrated (and sometimes controversial) figure of the Harlem Renaissance, first rose to prominence with Mules and Men (1935) and cemented her reputation soon after with her 1937 masterwork, Their Eyes Were Watching God. However, few know about the woman behind this widely read and highly acclaimed novel - particularly the last 10 years of her life. Airs 2/18 at 1-1:30 a.m.

American Mosque - http://anamericanmosque.com/ - An American Mosque is a groundbreaking documentary about religious freedom and the struggle against intolerance set in a rural California town. Sparked by the destruction of a mosque, we witness how a community responds to hate through painful but ultimately positive discussions about the perception of Islam in America and our responsibility to defend everyone's Constitutional right to worship. In the end, determined members of different faiths come together to support the Muslim community as it peacefully rebuilds its mosque. An American Mosque tells a timely story that suggests how we can become a more tolerant society. Airs 2/18 at 1:30-2a.m. NO school re-record rights available!

Fins Feathers & Fur - A pet shop for teaching writing? Sure. One of the main reasons second- and third-graders say they can't write is that they don't have anything to write about. These programs give them surefire "story starters." Captain Write, a retired sea captain who writes a weekly newspaper column about animals, runs the Fins, Feathers & Fur pet shop with his daughter, Amy. Three children who make the friendly neighborhood shop their second home learn from the Captain and Amy about the writing process and about helping each other put their thoughts and feelings on paper. The series begins with concepts as simple as the connections between objects and words. Later, the children draft sentences and paragraphs, revise drafts, and write for specific purposes and readers. Most programs contain two "story starters"—a montage of animals, people, or both and a surprise or unresolved ending. Airs Friday 4-5 a.m. beginning 2/6. Latino Americans - http://pbs.org/latino-americans/ - This series tells the story of early settlement, conquest and immigration; of tradition and reinvention; of anguish and celebration;and of the gradual construction of a new American identity from diverse sources that connects and empowers millions of people today. The series covers the 1500s to the present day. Airs Thursday 3-4 a.m. beginning 2/12. Biz Kids (500) - http://wxxi.org/tv/bizkids/ - BIZ KID$ is the fun, new, fast-paced TV series where kids teach kids about money and entrepreneurship. Created for school-aged children, each half-hour episode features several young business owners and philanthropists who share their success stories. Whether it's a skateboard designer, a candy store owner, or a hip-hop music producer, the kids on the series inspire young viewers. Throughout the series, kids learn about saving, budgeting, investing and giving back to the community. Spoofs of old TV shows and comedy sketches performed by a humorous cast of characters make the series a hit with both kids and parents alike. The King of Ka-Ching, a cheesy lounge singer, and Francine Fairtrade, a world traveler with extensive knowledge of all things exotic and financial, are two of the characters who add to the fun.

Airs Thursday at 1-2 a.m. beginning 2/19.

Invitation to World Literature- http://www.learner.org/courses/worldlit/ - brings together a tantalizing mix of writers, literary scholars, artists and performers to explore timeless tales from a variety of eras and cultures. Writers and scholars discuss key scenes while artists and performers deliver modern interpretations of an eclectic collection stretching from ancient Greece (Euripides) to the French Enlightenment (Voltaire) to the modern day (Gabriel Garcia Marquez). Guests include: actor Alan Cummings, theater director Mary Zimmerman, actor-director Tim Blake-Nelson, acclaimed composer Philip Glass, playwright David Henry Huang, film director Harold Ramis, actress Kristen Chenoweth and humorist Mo Rocca. Airs Monday at 3-4

a.m. beginning 2/23.

Follow the story of foreign researcher and Nobel Laureate Gunnar Myrdal whose study, An American Dilemma (1944), provided a provocative inquiry into the dissonance between stated beliefs as a society and what is perpetuated and allowed in the name of those beliefs. His inquiry into the United States' racial psyche becomes a lens for modern inquiry into how denial, cognitive dissonance, and unrecognized, unconscious attitudes continue to dominate racial dynamics in American life. The film’s unusual narrative sheds a unique light on the unconscious political and moral world of modern Americans. This film is part of WXXI's African American Educational Awareness Film Series, now in its 6th year. The series is made possible with support from our sponsors: Pothos Productions, Freedom Trail Commission, WHTK-1280AM What’s Goin on with Brown & Allen, The Community Place of Greater Rochester and Threshold CAPP. Community Cinema is presented by ITVS and funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
