Pioneering a ground breaking integration of traditional southwestern pumice and adobe construction with some of the latest photovoltaic, hydronic and astronomical technologies available, this 9000sf observatory and hacienda is characterized by its unusual interpretation of a conventional courtyard scheme and its fortress like mien. The Neff Hacienda and Observatory spent nearly three years evolving from a modest and remote 1200sf observatory torreon into an over 9000sf hacienda and conference center serviced by an integrated torreon, control center and sanatorium. With its 24in thich pumicerete walls and 30ft deep micro-pile footings, the project is expected to take another two years to complete.

NORTH SHORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING SALEM, MA

Working in partnership with The North Shore CDC, this proposal for new affordable housing developments in Salem Point sought to fundamentally alter Salem’s common understanding of The Point neighborhood and help to cultivate new, more palpable ideals of community, self-reliance and participation.

Spread between three separate sites in Salem Point, this proposal responds directly to Salem’s brimming need for affordable housing while integrating the existing community’s pent up need for accessible community spaces, formal cultural space and a closer more collaborative relationship with North Shore CDC. The proposal provides a total of sixty-eight units of affordable rental housing between three separate buildings on Lynch Street, Congress Street and Palmer Street, along with 6,000sf of new on site office space for the CDC, a new day care center and 3,000sf of community space located in the Congress Street property.

At just over 3,000sf this compact, three bedroom residence was designed to articulate a new architectural language for high-performance residential design in a New England Vernacular. Located on a waterfront parcel in Fairfield Connecticut, this proposal for the town’s first PassivHaus appropriated a traditional gabled vernacular and introduced a simple offset volume that massed onto the southern exposure of the building identifying the house’s primary entrance, offering unobstructed views through the house to the water, and enabling the building’s passive lighting and conditioning strategies.

Originally created as a studio course for the National Renewable Energy’s Solar Decathlon Competition in Washington DC, the RISD Solar program has since grown into a collaborative workshop between RISD’s Department of Architecture and Brown University’s School of Engineering. The workshop has become focused on designing and building an off-grid, solar thermal pavilion for the Roger Williams Park and Zoo. Working off of earlier conceptual designs for solar-thermal enclosures, the pavilion is built of the same structural rib and absorptive panel bays pioneered by the Solar-Skin House. Taking advantage of both passive and active conditioning strategies, the RISD-Brown Solar Pavilion is intended to be erected as an inspiring proof of concept, to stoke both public awareness and interest in sustainable design while also serving as an invaluable learning and fund-raising tool for both schools to take advantage of.

Through an ongoing and consistent dialogue with allSegments of the community, this urban design proposal was intended to be used as a provocative visioning experiment for the Porter Square neighborhood in Cambridge Massachusetts. The intervention attempted to transform several blighted lots around the Porter Square T-Stop into a celebrated and diverse transportation hub, as well as urban attraction within the city of Cambridge. The aim was to enhance and improve the quality of life within and around the Porter Square neighborhood through the dedicated improvement of underutilized public spaces, the promotion and engagement of local cultural institutions and the support of local commercial and retail businesses.

Working in collaboration with the Southside Community Land Trust, a non-profit community organizing and property management company in Providence RI, this project sought to initiate a more immediate, grass-roots form of urban revitalization within South Providence neighborhoods. Through the collaborative design and construction of a series of urban, community gardens strategically sited throughout South Providence, these interventions are designed to accommodate a variety of community ordained activities, while formally advertising the desire within the communities for more substantive and lasting socio-urban change.
