Origin

Book Review

Author: Dan Brown Publication: Transworld, Doubleday Books.

Dan Brown is one of the most popular bestselling authors of current times known for his thriller novels. His novels generally have blend of religion, history and modern science and hence it appeals to readers of all age. Origin is his seventh book and fifth in Robert Langdon’s series. It was an easy pick for me because I have read and enjoyed all his previous six books. His other books include The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, The lost Symbol and Inferno in Robert Langdon’s series and Digital Fortress and Deception Point as stand-alone novels. Few from these are adapted as movies.

Dan Brown is certainly a great story teller, but above that he and his team does a great amount of research that is reflected in his books. His book will typically start with a declaration that all art, architecture, locations, science and organizations referred in novel are real (and this is really true!). Every fiction that he creates in his book is backed by a background fact. Hence facts and fiction are so intricately weaved that it becomes difficult to separate the two.

For those who have not read any of Dan Brown’s books in Robert Langdon’s series, it is good to know that Robert Langdon, the central character in all these books, is a professor at Harvard and an expert symbologist (expert of decoding ancient symbols). In all books Robert’s this expertise brings him into a situation where he has to show dare and take-up an adventure to serve a bigger cause. The Da Vinci Code was the first book in Robert Langdon’s series, but one can start with any book as all of them are almost standalone with no impact or characters carried over from previous stories.

The story of Origin is based on exploring two basic unresolved questions of human race– Where do we come from? and Where are we headed toward? i.e. what is over origin and what is our future? Edmond Kisrch (character probably modeled on Elon Musk CEO of Tesla), a futurist billionaire, an unorthodox computer genius, a scientist and a researcher claims to have found answer to these fundamental questions. He is going to reveal this secret to the world by organizing a grand presentation. The secret that he claimed will not only shake, but shatter the very foundations of modern day religion. However, during the presentation just before revealing the secret he is murdered. Edmond happens to be former student and friend of Robert Langdon and hence Robert was also invited in the presentation. Robert believes in Edmond and after his death Robert takes-up (willingly or unwillingly) the incomplete task to make the presentation public. However there are two potential problems to this – First Edmond’s presentation is stored in a remote device and is encrypted and second world’s powerful authorities, both religious and political, are trying to stop this. Will Robert be successful? If yes then at what cost? To know this one will have to read the book.

To summarize, Brown has smartly incorporated every element in the book. In the book he touches from poet William Blake, to architect Antoni Gaudi, to modern day artificial intelligence. The book is certainly well written. However, compared to his previous books, I personally felt the story have slow pace in initial part. It’s more like reading a Wikipedia than a novel. It has little less action compared to his previous books. But having said this, I will have to agree that it’s impossible to put down and certainly good one-time read for Brown’s fans.
