FAMOUS QUOTES

El estudio no se mide por el número de páginas leí-das en una noche, ni por la cantidad de libros leídos en un semestre. Estudiar no es un acto de consumir ideas, sino de crearlas y recrearlas.

Today’s book review is on “Introductory Phonetics and Phonology” by Linda I. House.

The first time I looked at this book, it felt just like Phonetics course all over again . But I don’t mean it in the wrong way; actually , I consider this kind of books a great way to refresh your memory, and encourage you to go on and

check again some basic phonological lessons. This book, gives such a well organized list of

topics, that makes it really easy to follow and see what the author intended: Give the reader the chance to understand sound, word and sentence formation, in its spoken and written form. This is accomplished by the author as she guides the reader through the components of the production of speech sounds. Furthermore, the author leaves no loose ends; she goes from anatomic and physiological aspects to cultural context; which makes the book even more complete; focusing on the reader’s speech and listening skills improvement.

FUN CLASS ACTIVITIES

You can always make the class a little bit fun to students, making activities where all of them can participate.

One good option and a big classic is hanging man. You can involve student with the topic of the class and the students must guess the word with a sort of limited opportunities.

Also, a good activity option, if you are

teaching vocabulary, is “making words game” this can result very interesting if you want to know the level of vocabulary of your student. On the board, the teacher writes a set of letters in isolation and the student in pair or

in little groups must write as many

words as they know, that start with that letter, the group with more words wins.

A good option for an activity that you can make with a group of High School students is with a song, if they can choose it is better, and using that song you can make them recognize anything, verb tenses, modal verbs, vocabulary, etc.

A piece of advice if you are working with children, you can give them a price or something like a reward if they win. Also, you must be careful because these games could be fun to children but if you work with adolescents they might get bored.

When we have a child in our group with SEN or Special Education Needs, could mean, that this child might have learning difficulties, behavioral problems or emotional issues. These 3 problems are the most common in students with SEN. Logically, a child with SEN tends to learn slower than the rest of the group and for this reason, as a teacher, we need to put an emphasis on that student. But the teacher must be careful doing this, for the reason that the students with SEN, frequently, primary school students, are ashamed of this situation and the special treatment doesn’t help much. Also, many teachers make mistakes at the moment of having a student with special education needs, like making everything easier to him (e.g. evaluations) that is not a good way of helping the student, because we have to try that SEN students overcome their difficulties. A piece of advice to teachers that have students with SEN in his or her group is at the end of the class summarizes the content as simple as possible. By Guido Riquelme

A HELPFUL WEBSITE FOR A CURIOUS TEACHER

Among the thousands of websites that I run into everyday, my pick for today is http://www.learnsomethingeveryday.co.uk. As the website’s name says, we do learn something every day, a moral teaching, a word...But with this website, you’ll learn some curious, and to my consideration unknown facts about very diverse topics.

Perhaps, you wonder why did I choose this website… Here’s my explanatory answer.

As teachers, we do not have to be only focused on our subject and the students’ performance, we should also be aware of what’s going on around us, whether it is a local news, a worldwide event, etc. Because we are a source of knowledge, we neither be ignorant nor an encyclopedia, yet we have to update our hard drive, because if we don’t, we will be left behind and loose a valuable opportunity to experience something new with our students.

By Camila Opazo.

Take a look at these facts !

Student’s Priorities

Universities and Diversity

Teacher and T-shirtGoing on casual clothes could be accepted for informal professions,

but are teachers allowed to go on casual

clothes when they are teaching in a classroom? The other day I went to a conference, which was given by Richard Albert and English man expert on teaching through TIC’s, and he was wearing a simple t-shirt and pair of trousers. I did not notice if he was less intelligent or less admired because of that, so I asked to myself, Should we, as teachers, allow institutions to for us dress in a formal way ?

Jhon Lenox

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR By Roberto Cáceres

TIC’s TIC TIC’s have taught us how to use technology in an educational way, but do we need to do everything in this way? What about the fact that students lose too much time

their homework, essentially TIC’s are important on the teaching process, but

Martin Cartrige

Society has learned to deal with protests so have I, but I’ve been wondering to myself, If are really

students worried about improving education’s quality? Are all those

protests in pro of education improvement? Surely, there are

certain students who will give everything to defend their

educational rights, but as them, we can also find those who are not

worried about it, they just want to lose classes or protest against

social unfairness; instead of supporting student’s movement.

Well, on the surface it may appear that students’ protests are well

founded, but we have to consider which the authentic intentions are.

Diversity at universities is a real fact and has been growing extremely fast these lately years, but personally, I think we still do not assume that in case of disable people, some of the edifications were not built in the right way,

some way we do.

they do not allow disable people to come in with a wheelchair, for example, although, we try to be fair anddo not discriminate people, in someway we do.

we neeed to take care of what children really do in front of

the computer

DICTIONARY TELEVISION

By Guido Riquelme.

The popular TV show,” Glee” , is about to conclude its 3rd season. Glee is not all about singing, it shows the different realities of a group of high school students. These students are the common stereotypes of an out casted group, like the bully and the bullied, the “queen bee” cheerleader, the Jock, and because Glee is about singing it cannot miss the drama queen Broadway singer wannabe. The strong message of Glee is embrace your difference, being proud of it. The teacher, William Schuester or Mr. Schue played by Mathew Morrison, has a great role in this TV show; he helps his students, the glee club, to go ahead with everything that they want, helping them in everything they want to succeed. In every teacher should exist a little Mr. Schue that supports the student in anything, advising or correcting them if they are wrong.
