Dear Parents and Friends, Vale - Robert Armytage It is with great sadness we farewell one of Edward School’s much loved, admired and respected former staff members, Robert Armytage. Robert passed away at home last Thursday after a brave battle with illness. Robert joined the Edward School staff in 1974, providing over 30 years of dedicated service to the pupils of Edward School, retiring in 2006 and continuing to live in Deniliquin with wife June, herself a former Edward staff member. Robert was an exceptional teacher, possessed with great skills in mathematics and language teaching. He also had a great love of Australian history, science and literature which saw him enthusiastically share these passions over the years with the pupils under his care. Many high achievers from Edward School in varied fields and professions will attest to the wonderful teaching skills of Robert Armytage and the thorough grounding in the basic skills that he imparted. Robert’s three children, Katherine, Martin and Gillian all attended Edward School. Katherine and Gillian attained the honour of school captain in 1982 and 1987 respectively, both also graduating as dux of Edward School. Martin was also elected as a school leader, serving as a prefect. All three of Robert and June’s children are university graduates and he always made known his admiration for the quality teaching that was provided for his children by his colleagues at Edward. Robert served under a number of principals and worked with many teachers during his time at Edward. He enjoyed the wonderful ‘team’ ethic of the Edward school staff and community and was always supportive of programs and activities that were instigated to enrich pupils’ lives and broaden their wider experiences. He was appreciative of the talents and contributions of his fellow staff members and was particularly proud in later years to work alongside former pupils Georgia Jacobs and Nicole Bermingham as teaching colleagues. Excursions, river camps, rideathons, theatrical productions, school fetes, school grounds improvements and challenging wood craft projects were among the many special school activities Robert was involved with over the years. He was also an active member of the P&C, both as a parent and supportive staff member and always attended monthly meetings during his whole career at Edward. As mentioned earlier, Robert was a noted mathematician and one of the state’s most respected question writers for the Basic Skills program, as well as contributing to various state and Riverina professional mathematics groups. Robert leaves a legacy of exceptional service and an outstanding contribution to public education. His efforts on behalf of hundreds of students over three decades of dedicated teaching will never be forgotten. He will be sadly missed by many past and present staff members, students and parents of Edward Public School and the wider educational fraternity. We convey our sincere sympathies to June, Katherine, Martin, Gillian, partners and families. Goodbye Mr Armytage. Thursday Afternoon Parents and carers are advised that quite a few of our staff members will be attending the funeral service of Robert Armytage on Thursday afternoon. Thanks to the additional support from teachers from Deniliquin South PS, together with Edward staff, all classes will be supervised. Altina Wildlife Park Yesterday, all students in Stage 2 should have received a note advising the postponement of this excursion until Monday 17 th November, 2014. Parents and carers are asked to contact the office if they have any concerns regarding this. Dear Parents and Friends,

Vale - Robert Armytage It is with great sadness we farewell one of Edward School’s much loved, admired and respected former staff members,

Robert Armytage.

Robert passed away at home last Thursday after a brave

battle with illness.

Robert joined the Edward School staff in 1974, providing

over 30 years of dedicated service to the pupils of Edward School, retiring in 2006 and continuing to live in Deniliquin

with wife June, herself a former Edward staff member.

Robert was an exceptional teacher, possessed with great

skills in mathematics and language teaching. He also had a great love of Australian history, science and literature which

saw him enthusiastically share these passions over the years with the pupils under his care.

Many high achievers from Edward School in varied fields and professions will attest to the wonderful teaching skills of

Robert Armytage and the thorough grounding in the basic skills that he imparted.

Robert’s three children, Katherine, Martin and Gillian all attended Edward School. Katherine and Gillian attained the

honour of school captain in 1982 and 1987 respectively, both also graduating as dux of Edward School. Martin was

also elected as a school leader, serving as a prefect. All three of Robert and June’s children are university graduates

and he always made known his admiration for the quality

teaching that was provided for his children by his colleagues at Edward.

Robert served under a number of principals and worked with

many teachers during his time at Edward. He enjoyed the

wonderful ‘team’ ethic of the Edward school staff and

community and was always supportive of programs and

activities that were instigated to enrich pupils’ lives and broaden their wider experiences.

He was appreciative of the talents and contributions of his

fellow staff members and was particularly proud in later

years to work alongside former pupils Georgia Jacobs and Nicole Bermingham as teaching colleagues.

Excursions, river camps, rideathons, theatrical productions,

school fetes, school grounds improvements and challenging

wood craft projects were among the many special school activities Robert was involved with over the years.

He was also an active member of the P&C, both as a parent

and supportive staff member and always attended monthly

meetings during his whole career at Edward.

As mentioned earlier, Robert was a noted mathematician and one of the state’s most respected question writers for

the Basic Skills program, as well as contributing to various

state and Riverina professional mathematics groups.

Robert leaves a legacy of exceptional service and an outstanding contribution to public education. His efforts on

behalf of hundreds of students over three decades of

dedicated teaching will never be forgotten.

He will be sadly missed by many past and present staff members, students and parents of Edward Public School and

the wider educational fraternity.

We convey our sincere sympathies to June, Katherine,

Martin, Gillian, partners and families.

Goodbye Mr Armytage.

Production Survey Results

From our recent Production Survey, we received 10 responses from 131 school families. Of those who responded:

80% felt that the RSL Club Auditorium was an ideal venue

100% believed that non-allocated, but pre-purchased seats were good

80% believed the performance should remain outside of school hours

100% believed a whole school production was a worthwhile activity and that it was also an important component of the school curriculum

90% believed that one evening performance was enough

100% appreciated the time and effort that went into staging such a performance.

Canberra Excursion As our school community is aware, students in Stage 3 have

recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students have participated in a variety of

educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history,

culture, heritage and democracy. This has complimented our classroom learning and enabled deeper understanding

of lesson content through practical activities and first-hand exposure.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as

part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian

Government has contributed funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program

towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the

school upon completion of the excursion and has been already factored into the budget for our excursion.

This PACER rebate together with the $50 subsidy provided by the Edward School P & C ensured that the majority of

Stage 3 students were given the opportunity to attend. Many thanks to the Edward P & C and PACER for their

contributions. All the students had a fantastic and memorable trip.

Kindergarten Transition On Thursday, we will welcome those students who will begin their formal education at Edward PS in 2015. This will be the first of 4 sessions designed to make the transition to ‘big school’ a smooth one. Mr Day will be leading this program with some helpers from KGD. Mrs Bowie will have the remaining students from his class from 9.30 to 11am. Normal classes will resume after recess.

Aspire Me Art Exhibition Community members are invited to view the art exhibition

being held at the Peppin Heritage Centre in Deniliquin commencing with the opening on Wednesday evening. We

have art work from 2 students featured in this exhibit

following their involvement in the Aspire Me Arts Camp in Moulamein last term. Congratulations to Ebony Behsmann

and Chloe Blenkiron for their inclusion in this exhibition.

Enviro-matters Stage 2 and 3 students participated in environmental science activities about water. They learned about the water cycle and brainstormed different ways to save water. They were placed into groups and were given a water saving device. They then had to devise an advertising campaign to promote their product on saving water. All students thoroughly enjoyed the activities
