    10 Stunning Hidden Paradises

From Around The WorldBy Clifford Edwards on July 18th, 2014

    10 Kirkjufell

Kirkjufell Mountain is best known for the stunning picturesbrought back by tourists. Located on the SnaefellsnesPeninsula in Iceland, there isnt anything impressively

significant about the mountain itself. Its not the biggestmountain in Iceland, or the deadliest, and it cant even claimto be one of the many volcanoes that have given Iceland thereputation of producing a third of all the basaltic lava in thehistory of the world. But if theres one thing that makes Kirkjufell stand outfrom the pack, its how all the elements of the scenery falltogether. This is a photogenic mountain. From the Middle-

earth landscape to the trio of waterfalls feeding a crystal clestream at the mountains foot, it all creates a perfect portraitidyllic Iceland. Even the weather pitches in. And, as the pictuabove shows, Kirkjufell is smack dab in the center of one of t

best places to view the stunning Northern Lights.

    9 Cano Cristales

Known to the locals as the River of Five Colors, CaCristales is truly a hidden paradise. Tucked away in tmountains of Colombia, there are only two ways to reach triver, and both of them are by plane. The colors of the rivcome from a combination of algae, the natural hue of the rivrocks, and the blue of the water itself. In particular, the rcomes from an aquatic plant called Macarenia clavigera.Because the coloration comes from living creatures, the effeshifts constantly, like a living watercolor painted by Gods owhand. The most spectacular time to see Cano Cristales is the summer, when the heat brings out the most vibrant shad

of red. In addition to the striking colors and the incredibbiodiversity of the region, Cano Cristales also flows over somof the oldest rocks in the worldthe Guiana Shield, whiformed about 1.2 billion years ago.

    8 Taylor Glacier Blood Falls

Antarctica isnt usually the first place that comes to mind whenyou picture a paradise, but as harsh and unforgiving as theweather may be, the landscape can be equally beautiful. Weve

only begun to really explore this frozen continent, but werefinding more and more wonders hidden beneath the ice.One striking example of Antarcticas uniqueness can be foundat the Taylor Glacier, which vomits a continuous stream ofiron-rich hypersaline water onto the surrounding snow. Theglacier was discovered in 1911 by an explorer named ThomasGriffith Taylor, who surmised that the reddish tint was caused

by an unknown form of bacteria. It wasnt until much later thatwe found the real reason for the spring of blood-colored wateran ancient underground pool of saltwater about 400 meters(1,300 ft) below the surface of the ice.During the Miocene period, about five million years ago,

water levels around Antarctica rose enough to leave a lake of

saltwater on the previously dry land. When the ocean receded,it stranded the lake, which was then slowly covered by a stringof glaciers until it was completely cut off from the surface. Withno oxygen, the lake was left in almost the exact same state as

when it was coveredit became a five-million-year-old timecapsule. There are microbes down there that have remainedunchanged since the Miocene period, and theyre responsiblefor breaking down iron deposits in the salty water. Once thatiron-rich water squeezes its way up through a fissure to thesurface and comes in contact with oxygen for the first time, theiron hydroxide reacts instantly, giving us a waterfall of rustthe Blood Falls.

    7 Beppu Hot Springs

Beppu, Japan is one of the worlds hot spring hot spots; theare more than 2,500 springs in the areathe second largsuch cluster in the world. The springs are colloquially knowas the Eight Hells, since there are eight main areas, eaproducing a unique type of spring. Blood Pond Hell, picturabove, is saturated with iron, giving both the water and tsteam a dark reddish tint. Some of the other Hells include Demon Mountain Hell, whihouses about 80 crocodiles; White Pond Hell, which contai

boric acid that gives the water a milky consistency; and OniisShaven Head Hell, which is a mass of bubbling mud thatsupposedlyresembles the shaven heads of monks rising the surface. Entire commerce systems have arisen around tsprings, letting you buy vegetables cooked in the Hells steaor eggs boiled right in the multicolored water. There are alsmaller springs that are cool enough for a foot bath, althouthe main springs are peppered with Do not swim signst

water in some of the Hells can reach a blistering 150 degre

    Celsius (300 F).6 Spotted Lake

The Okanagan Valley lies at the extreme southern borderBritish Columbia. For thousands of years, aboriginal tribhave lived and battled in the valley, and their legends remato this day. One of their most prominent legends told of

battle that occurred in the hills around Spotted Lakethknown as Khiluk to the First Nations of the region. During t

battle, both sides called a truce and allowed their men to bathetogether in the mineral-rich waters of Spotted Lake. The alleged healing properties of the lake are still advertisedtoday. There are high concentrations of 11 different minerals, including calcium and magnesium sulfate, and some traceamounts of titanium and silver. In the summer, when the lakepartially evaporates, the minerals precipitate into roundedholes. Each hole takes on a different color, depending on

which minerals are more concentrated in that particular spot.

    5 Panjin Red Beach

This gorgeous crimson landscape is located in China, nearthe city of Panjin. Its situated in the middle of an immense, sprawling wetland area in the Liaohe River Delta, but its theonly part of the wetland that takes on this vibrant coloration.Rather than sand, the beach is covered with a highly alkalinesoil, which is too basic for most plants to live on. That leaveslittle competition for the Suaeda salsa, a species of seaweedthat has completely taken over the 1.4 million acres that makeup Red Beach. In the summer, the seaweed is a dark green colorpretty butnot exactly breathtaking. But in autumn, the mature plants

take on a fiery red color that turns the beach into a one-of-a-kind spectacle. Most of the beach is closed to visitors in aneffort to protect the delicate ecosystem, but theres a smallsection thats open to tourists.

    4 Pamukkales Travertine Pools

One of the most unique sights in the world is, without a doubt, the cliffside travertine pools in Pamukkale, Turkey. Travertineis a type of limestone thats found in a lot of the worlds hotsprings. When the spring reaches the surface, the travertinesolidifies into stepped structures that hold the spring water. The fairy-tale result usually looks like something out of a Dr.

Seuss booklayers of crystal clear pools stacked on top of eaother. No matter where they form, theyre usually beautifulPamukkale was the ancient site of the Greek city of Hierapoland the name itself means cotton castle. From a distanthats absolutely what it looks like. The pools are initiaformed from soft calcium carbonate that later solidifies intravertine. Because of the high calcium content, the end resis a hillside thats white as snow.

    3 Zhangye Danxia

The Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park is locatin southwest China and contains more than a few unusufeatures. Probably the most startling are the multicolormountains known as Danxia landforms. The surreal coloraticomes from red sandstone and natural mineral deposits thhave formed over the course of 24 million years. Each stripconstitutes a different mineral, and over the ages, theyformed layer upon layer, resulting in a rainbow patterErosion from wind and rain has further polished the surfacof the mountains.

China is the only place in the world with this type of minerformation, and a few of the landforms have become UNESCWorld Heritage Sites. The town of Zhangye has capitalized the international interest in the Danxia landforms, and theare dozens of separate tour companies leading groups into trainbow mountains.

    2 Lake Retba

There are a handful of names that have been given to this laksome by locals and some by visitors, but they all essentia

mean the same thing: The Pink Lake. And while that may notbe the most creative moniker, its definitely the most accurate.Lake Retba is located in Senegal, and its only separated fromthe Atlantic Ocean by a thin strip of sand dunes. Becauseof that slight geographic separation, a species of algae called

Dunaliella salina has been able to proliferate in the lakeswarm waters.Found only in a few places in the world, Dunaliella algaeare salt loverswhich is good, because Lake Retba is as saltyas the Dead Sea. In order to survive such salty conditions,

Dunaliella produce a red pigment that allows them to absorbmore sunlight and produce beta carotene, which acts as a

buffer against the salt. The saltier the lake gets (particularly inthe dry season), the deeper the red gets. During particularlydry seasons, the lake will take on a hue that can only bedescribed as bloody.

    1 Lencois Maranhenses

An oasis in the middle of the desert makes a pretty picture, buttheyre few and far between in most of the worlds arid regions.Lencois Maranhenses National Park, on the other hand,is absolutely peppered with them. Located in northeasternBrazil, this sand-covered, 155,000-acre park isnt actuallya desert, even though it looks like one. Its located rightoutside the Amazon jungle and receives the same amount ofrainfall youd expect to see in a tropical rainforest. When therainwater collects between the dunes, it forms thousands uponthousands of separate lagoons that stretch as far as the eye cansee. Each lagoon functions as a completely unique ecosystem.Despite the lack of inlets or outlets, many of the standalone

lagoons are filled with fish that were carried to the pools aseggs by seabirds. But since the sandy ground is largely devoidof nutrients, very little vegetation grows in Maranhenses, turning it into sort of a combination of two worlds, like oil and

water stirred into the same bowl.

within a glacier and is created by waterfalls melting holes intothe ice while the water drains down to lower elevations, all the

while forming long tunnels and ice caves. Beautiful!

The Strangest Hotels on EarthBy Clifford Edwards on July 17th, 2014

The Mirrorcube at the TreehotelThe Mirrorcube is just one of the stunning rooms at theunusual Treehotel, which is located 40 miles south of the

Arctic Circle in Harads, Sweden. Other accommodationshere include a similarly hanging room encased in twigs and

branches, fittingly called the Birds Nest, a capsule, dubbedThe UFO, that hovers over the starkly beautiful landscape, anda cabin on stilts that is known as the Blue Cone, although it is

bright red on the outside, pure white on the inside, and not atall cone-shaped.

The Manta ResortThe Manta Resorts Underwater Room is an astonishing and astonishingly expensive -- tiny private island for rent.

You can sunbathe or stargaze on the roof of the structure, relax and dine on the main floor, and sleep thirteen feet

below the surface of the water in the underwater chamber, where spotlights underneath each window shine on the sea lifeswimming past. Its a very beautiful concept and only slightlyterrifying.

IceHotelAccording to its website, the 24-year-old IceHotel Jukkasjrvi, Sweden, is the first and largest ice hotel on tplanet. Who knew the concept of a hotel made of 30,00tonnes of snice (thats snow and ice) would take off bapparently it has indeed spawned some competition. Befo

you book your stay, be sure to read the information about h

to dress appropriately for the -7 degree Celcius temperatuyou can expect to experience in your room. At least ywont be calling the front desk to complain about the conditioning.

Magic Mountain LodgeYou have to brave a rope bridge swinging high above tforest floor to get into this thirteen room guest house callLa Montana Magica Lodge, which is nestled in the middle ohuge private nature reserve in Neltume, Chile. You might al

have to dodge the cascade of water that erupts out of the tof the volcano-shaped building every now and then. Visitorsthe hotel complain that its expensive, its difficult to get to, athat the service is terrible. And yet everyone says you shouldmiss it. A big plus: a species of tiny deer called the pudu frolon the grounds. Who knows, after a few bottles of beer you meven spot the odd hobbit.

Action Park Vernon, N.J.Whats not to love about a place once labeled Americas mostdangerous theme park? Besides the fact that a half-dozenpeople have died and lawsuits forced it to declare bankruptcyand close in 1996, anyway. That was then; this is now. ActionPark, charmingly referred to as Class-Action Park in theold days, just reopened with the old nameafter online videosprompted a wave of fan nostalgia. The good news: The worst ofthe water parks rides have been revamped to improve safety. For some die-hard (ha!) fans of the old incarnation, thats alsothe bad news, although recent visitors say the rides still feel

pretty scary. Upon Action Parks return, Sen. Cory Booker ofNew Jersey tweeted, WOW! Action Park is back! I still havescars from long ago visits but I so want to go again.
