editor’s letter

Welcome to Elevated Existence!

For me, it all started with the death of my mother. For others, it’s often a similar story

— the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship or a battle with an illness. More

often than not, the journey to spirituality usually starts with some type of emotional

pain or struggle. But no matter why we are led down our individual spiritual paths,

we’re usually searching for answers to the same questions: Why did this happen?

Why does it hurt so much, and how can I find some relief? What is the meaning of

it all? And, ultimately, why am I here, and what happens when I die?

Once we start down this road, however, we begin to realize there are many more

questions (and even more answers) than we ever imagined. If the floor next to your

nightstand looks anything like mine, you could open your own library with the

stacks of books full of insight waiting to be discovered.Eight years ago, I began down the road to higher consciousness, and with each new book

I pick up, seminar I attend, podcast I download or program I uncover, I feel I am getting

just a little bit closer to the truth — and subsequently, finding a little more joy and inner

peace in my life. And that is what this new publication is about — sharing what I continue

to learn in the hopes that it will help you in the same way it has helped and continues to

help me. While I am certainly no guru and don’t have all the answers, I have more than 10

years of experience in magazine publishing and decided to use my knowledge and talent to

create a publication that spreads love, healing and hope to those who discover it.

In the cover story, ‘Connecting to the Soul,’ I go inside the Chopra Center Renewal

Weekend, held recently in New York, because I feel it was a previous “Perfect Health”

program by the Center that led me to create this publication. It was there I realized

each and every one of us in this physical world possesses a special talent to be used in

service to others. I asked myself “What is my talent, and how can I use it?” A year and a half

later, after too many synchronistic events to describe, here is Elevated Existence.

I’d like to take a minute and thank all of my advisors, especially my creative director, Ana

— this never would have happened without your talent, wisdom and advice. Thank you for

illustrating my vision so beautifully through your art. Kathy, the logo is amazing, as are you,

and Mehgan, you have gone above and beyond, and I will be eternally grateful. Maureen,

thank you for taking the time to answer all of my e-mails and calls looking to tap into your

seemingly endless pipeline of publishing wisdom and experience, and Sandi, I couldn’t ask

for a better friend. I thank you for listening and encouraging me throughout this process.

Without all of you, this magazine would not be possible.

Last but not least, thank you, reader, for downloading this issue. I hope I provide you with

useful information and inspire you in at least one way. If there is anything you would like to

learn more about, or if you want to share a comment on something you’ve read, I encourageand welcome your feedback. E-mail me at [email protected], and I promise to do

my best to fill each issue with the information you seek.

Although many of us have discovered spirituality through struggle, as Dr. Deepak Chopra

says in the cover story, “something needs to die to create the space for something new.” May

this magazine help you to fill that space.

Blessings and love to you all,

Tammy MastrobertePublisher & Editor-in-Chie

A Spiritual Hotel?FAITH AND RELIGION ASIDE, CHECK THE NIGHTSTAND DRAWER

the next time you stay at a hotel in the U.S. and you willprobably find The Bible. But with spirituality sweeping

the world with universal views outside of traditional

religion, one Nashville, Tenn., hotel is acknowledging

the change.

Hotel Preston, a boutique establishment owned by

Oregon-based Provenance Hotels, is now offering a

“Spiritual Menu,” according to a report in The Tennessean.

Guests can call room service and order literary works from

a laminated menu, which includes the King James Version of the Bible, the New American Bible, the Torah, the

Quran, the Tao Te Ching, The Four Noble Truths of

Buddhism, the Book of Mormon, books on Scientology and

Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu text, Dina Nishioka, public

relations director for the hotel told The Tennessean.

We say, bravo! May this be the beginning of a

Strengthen Your Work SpaceMANY PEOPLE SPEND AT LEAST EIGHT HOURS A DAY AT WORK, AND

while our homes may reflect our beliefs and desires for a

comfortable, relaxing and positive environment, we don’t

always carry this into our work environments — a place where

a gentle reminder to de-stress our bodies and minds can often

be the most useful.

In April 2008, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution asked its

readers to reveal what faith reminders they keep at work to

motivate, relax and cope with worries. Answers ranged from

inspirational jewelry and magnets to plaques and personal

mementos — one woman keeps a craft project from her 10-

year-old son nearby, which lists all the things he is thankful for,

including family, friends and Jesus. Another reader keeps aplaque in his truck that reads, “Lord help me remember that

nothing is going to happen to me today that you and I together

can’t handle,” the report stated.

Whether it represents your religion or faith, serves as a

reminder of a relaxing vacation or conjures up a memory from

a loved one or friend, these symbols can bring us back to our

true nature, reminding us to let go and helping us regain

perspective on a troubling situation.

Can’t find that perfect symbol, saying or trinket? Write this

phrase on a sticky note and put it on your computer monitor,

work telephone or anywhere else you will see it often —

“Everything Happens for a Reason.” After all, inspiration

doesn’t have to be complicated. EE

and take off the “masks” we create to hide our

imperfections from the world in an effort to

Inside the Chopra Center

Renewal Weekend

By Tammy Mastroberte

C O V E R S T O R Y

Thunderous applause greeted Deepak Chopra’s appearance on a recent Saturday afternoon as he took the stage at The Park Central Hotel in midtown Manhattan. Clad in

bright red glasses bejeweled with crystals, matching ruby red    sneakers, blue jeans, a black shirt and black jacket, he sat down with a microphone, and the next two hours felt like mere minutes.

More than 250 people gathered to learn the

importance of silence and the significance of

looking within at the Chopra Center’s Renewal

Weekend this past May.

“When we experience true reality, that which

exists beyond this physical world, we feel peaceful

and euphoric because we are connected to it,”

Chopra said, explaining we can connect

to this reality through meditation.

“When we come back, we are renew-

ed,” he said.

At the heart of the weekend, and

the core of every Chopra Center pro-

gram, is meditation. The event began

with a course in Primordial Sound

Meditation, a technique revitalized by

Chopra with origins in India.“If the one thing you come away with

from this weekend is meditation, then we

feel we’ve served you well,” D r. David Simon,

medical director and co-founder of the

Chopra Center for Well Being, said during

his speech on the first evening called “The

Art of Living Consciously.”

“This weekend is your introduction to con-

sciousness as a second language,” he said. “There

is a possibility of creating a better world – for

ourselves, others and everyone on the planet.”

Setting the Groundwork  The link that held all the presentations together

kicked off Friday morning with an introduction to

meditation. After teaching the general principles

of meditation and specific guidelines of

Primordial Sound Meditation, each

attendee received one of 108 possible

mantras or primordial sounds based on

the time and location they were born.

“This is the sound or vibration the

universe was making when you were

born,” the lead meditation instructor at

the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, Calif.,

known as Davidji, explained. “While themantra doesn’t stop thought, repeating something

over without meaning allows you to disconnect.”

After yoga on the second day, the group

gathered for its first group meditation — 270

people in a ballroom, sitting in silence for 30

minutes. Afterwards, Davidji asked attendees

what they experienced, and answers ranged from

“a constant chain of thought,” to “a completely

relaxed body.” Some saw colors or white light,

Page 10: EE June 2008 Issue

and others saw images flash in front of them. All of

these experiences are normal, Davidji reassured.

“Every meditation is like a snowflake — each

one is different,” he said. “Three things can happen

during meditation – we fall asleep, have thoughts or

go into the gap, which is stillness and silence. Any, all

or a combination of these three are signs of a

verified meditation.”

He went on to note that any time our needs are

not met, our minds and bodies become activated,

typically known as the fight or flight response. When either the physical body or ego is threatened,

we immediately go into reactive mode for survival.

“Stress occurs when your needs are not

met,” Davidji said. “By meditating, you

move from a reactive mode to a place of

restful awareness, and as you continue to

meditate, you move to what is known as

the intuitive response, where you are not

defensive about anything. Meditation

turns fight or flight into a calmer state, and

lets us view a situation by taking a step

back and being more reflective.”

He encouraged attendees to meditate

twice a day — in the morning and early

evening — for 30 minutes at a time. “We

live in a goal-oriented society, and we are

so achievement focused,” he said. “The

goal in meditation is not to get into the

gap. The goal is to meditate for 30 minutes

at a time, twice a day, and whatever

happens, happens.”

The benefits of meditation are seen

after we open our eyes, when we are living

a life with more grace and more ease, Davidji said.

“Meditation proactively integrates stillness andsilence into your life on a regular basis, and if your

needs are not met and you have stress, it won’t have

the same impact it had before. You now have a tool

for the rest of your life,” he said.

Connecting to the Soul  It was during Deepak Chopra’s session on Saturday

afternoon that attendees were reminded how at the

deepest level, everyone is part of one soul, one mind

and one consciousness.

“It’s a trick of the neurons that we are separate,”

Chopra explained. “In reality, there is no separation,

no space and no time. Everyone who lived before, who

lives now or who will live in the future is part of one

mind — God’s mind. We are contained within it.”

Focused on the importance of finding and

maintaining a connection to our soul, which is the

same as connecting to God, Chopra gave attendees

three questions to answer to determine if this

connection is present in any particular aspect of their

lives — Is it easy? Is it fun? Am I getting results?“If one of them is no, then something is

interfering with your connection,” he noted. “You

could be too attached to the outcome of your desire

or looking to assert your control. You could also be

looking for approval from others. All of this stems

from an unwillingness to surrender to uncertainty.”

In a system that is totally certain, there can be no

creativity, an element necessary to create our own

realities and manifest our desires, according to Chopra.

“God is the creator, and the more we areconnected,

the more things fall into place — the right people as

well as being in the right place at the right time,” he

explained.

Co-creating Your Reality Chopra also took attendees on a journey to bury at

least one toxic emotion, behavior or habit in order to

renew. “What are we going to bury here today, and

leave it here forever?” he asked. “What emotions are

not serving you or are toxic? What are some toxic

habits, behaviors or addictions that need to die? It

needs to die in order for you to renew.”

Attendees wrote down what they would like to

experience, including the world they want to live in and

the type of relationships they want to have. “We have

to let go of certain things in our life that are not serving

us, and we have to replace them with what we want tosee,” Chopra said. “Renewal involves death and

resurrections — getting to our soul,” he said. “That is

the part of us that goes beyond our mind. It’s the

deepest level of our existence and our consciousness.”

The soul exists between our thoughts, in a space

called the gap, which can be reached through

meditation. “Today, when scientists look at the

physical world, they see molecules, which are made

up of atoms, which are made up of subatomic

particles, which when examined are vibrations,”

Chopra said. “Everything around us — the trees, the

walls — it appears to be solid, but if you go to the

most fundamental level, it is a vibration. And there

is a space between every vibration. Scientists have

examined this space, which is known as the gap.”

What is important to know is the space between

vibration scientist studied, and the space between

our thoughts is the same space. “This means the

consciousness behind our thoughts is the same

consciousness that is responsible for all of the

universe,” Chopra concluded. After burying toxic emotions, Chopra discussed

the importance of happiness as a component of our

existence, which comes from the way we look at the

world. “If you are happy, you see opportunities all

around. If you are unhappy, you see problems,”

Chopra said. “We need to align ourselves with the

laws of nature. Most people have the idea that if they

The Manifestation ProcessScientists have come to the following conclusions

about the gap: It consists of infinite possibilities;

everything in it is connected to everything else(syncronicity); there is uncertainty (the laws of

nature can’t be fully computed); infinite creativity;

and observer effect, meaning intention is very

powerful and can orchestrate its own fulfillment

(manifestation), Chopra stated.

He outlined the process of manifestation for

attendees as follows:

: Figure out what needs to die in order to

create space for something new or better;

: Set specific intentions for what you want to

create with clarity;

: Get your ego out of the way. Feel gratitude for

what you already have because you can’t feelgratitude and have your ego at the same time;

: Surrender to uncertainty — do not impose

your will on your soul;

: Learn to go into the gap through

meditation; and

: Expect syncronicity

and coincidence to

manifest whatever

you intended.

have the right relationship, are healthy and have the

right amount of money, they will be happy. But it is

better if you believe the opposite — if you are happy,

you will achieve your goals.”

To change the way we look at the world, Chopra

recommended challenging and changing our beliefs.

“Pick a belief and ask yourself, ‘Is this true?’ ‘Am I

100 percent sure it’s true?’ ‘What does holding this

belief, do to me?’ ‘Who would I be without this

limiting belief?’ Do this regularly with any limiting

belief and you will see that it is not true. Gothrough this process in this sequence and you will

start to get though limiting beliefs.”

Adapting Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs,

Chopra explained a person’s basic needs as follows:survival and safety, including money, material

things and other pleasures of the physical world;

love and relationships, as we all want to belong;

meaning and purpose; the ability to tap into a

higher consciousness through questioning ‘Do we

have a soul?’ and ‘What happens when we die?’;

and enlightenment.

“This is our soul’s journey,” he said. “It has a very

specific map. Ultimately, we all want to be one with

our source or God. Life is a separation and then a

coming back. You hide yourself and then you seek

yourself. And meditation is the key.”

Health vs. Disease In his first session of the weekend, Dr. David Simon,

a board-certified neurologist known for his use

of holistic healthcare, specifically Ayurveda,

shared the differences between conventional

and holistic medical practices. He explained

traditional medicine looks at the body as a collection

of molecules where doctors are taught to manipulatethe molecules to correct problems. However, from the

consciousness perspective, the body is a network of

energy and information.

“The medical model

is very noble and well

intentioned. It is very

good at treating symp-

toms of illness, but not at

the underlying issues that

caused them,” Simon

told attendees. “It is

incomplete because the

most powerful pharmacy

on earth is our human

body and mind.”

From the traditional

medical perspective,

health is the absence

of a definable disease.

Conversely, the con-

sciousness perspective

sees disease as the

absence of vibrant

health, Simon explained. And the beginnings of a

disease can be traced back to our thoughts.“When there is mental disturbance, it usually

translates into turbulent immune states and a

physical turbulence,” he said. “Our immune cells are

eavesdropping on our mental patterns.”

Our thoughts give rise to our realities, he said,

and the majority of our thoughts are based on prior

conditioning and the definitions we use to describe

ourselves, such as mother, son, brother, student or

employee. These contribute to the creation of our

ego, but the problem with living only by the ego —

“If you want to change your

reality, put   your attention on different things.”

—Dr. David Simon

Page 13: EE June 2008 Issue

7/27/2019 EE June 2008 Issue

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ee-june-2008-issue 13/30

which many do — is it will never provide

happiness, well-being and peace, Simon said. The

ego is the part of us that wants to exert power and

has a need for approval, but as we begin to expand

from this ego, we begin to lose our need for

approval, control and power, he explained.

“The nature of the ego is it is always ready to be

offended. But when we begin to shift into a sense of

self-reflection and start quieting down

some of the noise, we enter a place of

expanded awareness,” which can beachieved through meditation, he said. “It’s

the memory of silence and quietness that

lets us be a little more compassionate about

what is going on around us, and then

things begin to get easier.”

What we choose, we become, and Simon

cautioned attendees to pay attention to the

choices they are making. Rather than making

a choice based on prior conditioning, make

conscious choices to change your reality, he

recommended.

“Our biography becomes our biology,

and if you want to predict somebody’s

body and mind in the future, look at the

choices they are making now,” Simon said.

“If you want to change your reality, put

your attention on different things.”

If we feel attacked, either physically or

emotionally, the ego gets offended, and activates the

fight or flight response — which over time will

inevitably lead to disease, he explained. It increases

heart rate, blood pressure and blood sugar, and the

adrenal glands pump out adrenaline, noradrenalin

and cortisol, all while the body shunts blood from

its digestive tract to the muscles, Simon said.“This is something we needed when humans lived

in the jungle and a tiger was trying to eat them, but

if we activate it during a time when it does no good

whatsoever, it leads to illness,” he explained. Some

of the effects that can occur from this response

include heart disease, anxiety, insomnia, addictions,

diabetes, obesity, digestive disturbances, premature

aging, infections, cancer, heart attack and stroke.

The good news is meditation counteracts these

effects, putting the body into a state of restful

awareness. This is one way to “awaken our inner

pharmacy,” and lead us to making conscious, rather

than conditioned, choices, Simon noted.

We can also awaken this pharmacy through our

fives senses. What we listen to is very important and

can either help or hurt our health. Sounds of nature

are valuable in soothing the mind, according to

Simon, and touch, such as a massage, can improve

immune function and has even been shown to

increase weight gain in premature babies as well asreduce pain and anxiety, he told attendees. What

we see or look at also affects our immunity. For

example, a violent movie or television show can

depress the immunity, but watching a humorous

video for an hour can improve our immune system

for 12 hours, Simon said.

The Power of Emotions On the last session Sunday afternoon, Dr. Simon

took the stage again to discuss emotions, which

www.elevatedexis tence.com June 2008 E levated Exis tence 14

Dr. David Simon told attendees there are really only two emotions — comfort and discomfort — and   they are connected to thoughts.

Whether you are looking to manifest the perfect mate, decrease your

anxiety or connect with your divine source, there are seemingly endless

benefits to meditating on a regular basis. Decreasing heart rate,

normalizing blood pressure, reducing stress hormones, strengthening

immunity and, according to recent studies, increasing your compassion, are just a

few of the physical and mental effects meditation produces. Studies have even

shown a meditation practice can help a smoker quit the harmful habit and assist in

conquering drug, alcohol and other addictions.

Maybe you meditate regularly and have experienced some or all of these benefits.

Or maybe you have tried to meditate, but it just didn’t seem to work for you.

Perhaps you are too overwhelmed by the options and don’t know where to start.

With all the techniques available today, deciding on a meditation practice can be

more daunting than negotiating a deal on a used car.Transcendental, Vipassana, Japa, Insight and Primordial Sound are just a few

options available. Some people use a mantra, some follow their breath and still

others use visualization. So where should you start? And if you have already tried

to meditate, but didn’t succeed in sticking with it, where do you go from here?

“You want meditation to feel like wearing your old jeans,” Lorin Roche,

meditation expert, teacher and co-founder of Instinctive Meditation in Los Angeles,

(www.lorinroche.com) tells Elevated Existence. “Usually our senses — sight,

hearing, smell, taste, touch — are focused on the outer world. Meditation is using

the senses to get in touch with our inner world — the deep place within where our

feelings come from. The basic menu of meditation is the senses — seeing or looking

at things or colors; listening to sounds or an internal

mantra; and touch or movement meditation. Anymeditation technique is a way of using the senses to go

beyond the senses.”

Just as people have an instinct as to what music they

like when they hear it, Roche explains people will also

know what type of meditation they like when they try

it. However, he cautions, it’s not always apparent

during the first session. “Maybe the first time you hear

a piece of music, you don’t like it, but then the third

time you hear it, you do,” Roche says.

While visualization meditations are often used to

manifest things into your life, there are also chakra

meditations to activate energy or information in the

body; movement meditations such as Tai Chi andQigong; and walking meditations to “enliven the

awareness that underlies everything in your activity,”

says Sarah McLean, director of the Sedona Meditation

Training Co. (www.meditateinsedona.com) based in

Sedona, Ariz.

“There are meditations for times of day, and there

are even sleeping meditations,” she explains. “But truly

anything can be added onto the cornerstone of a silent

meditation. You can set some intentions and then gointo a meditation, but the cornerstone is to go into the

silence. It empowers everything else you do.”

According to Mark Thornton, executive meditation

coach and author of “Meditation in a New York Minute,

Super Calm for the Super Busy,” (www.yescalm.org), the

overall benefits of meditation can be explained in three

levels. “First, there are benefits you gain from a health

perspective. The second stage is increased creativity,

spontaneity and mental focus, and the third tier is higher

compassion and higher consciousness,” he says.

While some people can learn from a book or CD,

others need feedback from someone to be assured they

are on the right path and doing a technique correctly. That is why most experts recommend learning from a

friend or a qualified teacher.

“It’s fine to try something out of a book, but more

often than not, people don’t stick to it because many

are not sure they are doing it right,” McLean notes. “I

think having a teacher, and someone in front of you

who has been doing it for a while, to answer your

questions and assure you are doing it right is helpful.”

For the majority of people around the world juggling

careers, family, friends and more, some techniques

including certain types of Zen meditation or Vipassana,

which involve sitting silently for hours at a time, are

often not possible, McLean says.

“Between 20 and 30 minutes twice a day is ideal,

because you want to establish the silence in your

awareness. But if all you have time for is five minutes

a day, then start with five minutes,” McLean

recommends. “Meditation is a personal thing. Some

people want prayer-based or a visualization so they

can accomplish specific goals, and then there is thesilent mantra and awareness meditation, which tends

to settle the mind down more quickly because it gives

you something to focus on to transcend the world

outside of you.”

Primordial Sound Meditation is the technique McLean

teaches, which uses a mantra. It is a popular, ancient

technique derived from the yoga tradition of India that

has been revitalized by Dr. Deepak Chopra, co-founder

of The Chopra Center for Well Being in California, New

York and soon to be in Colorado, as well as best-selling

author of mind/body books, including “Perfect Health”

and most recently, “The Third Jesus.”

“Primordial Sound Meditation is a silent, mantra-

based meditation using primordial sounds, or sounds

of nature, incorporated into a mantra chosen for you

based on the time and location of your birth,” she says.

The Chopra Center’s “Primordial Sound Meditation

Guidelines for New Meditators” by Dr. Deepak

Chopra and Dr. David Simon, states “the word mantra

means instrument or vehicle of the mind. The mantrasused in Primordial Sound Meditation have no specific

meaning and are used only for their sound or

vibrational quality. Mantras interrupt the flow of

meaningful thoughts, allowing our attention to expand

to quieter, more abstract levels of the mind, until we

eventually slip beyond thought into silence.”

workshops, and a list of teachers available throughout

the United States can be accessed at www.chopra.com.“Meditation is not about forcing our mind to be

quiet,” McLean stresses. “It’s a process to rediscover

the quiet that is already there. Mantras get a bad rap,

but they are just instruments for the mind. Most don’t

have any meaning or specific meaning. When they are

used for the vibrational quality and not for meaning,

they tend to cut through the conversation of the mind.

We all have 60,000 to 90,000 thoughts per day, and a

mantra tends to cut through that.”

If a person doesn’t have personal mantra yet, he or

she can simply start with “Home,” or some other

sound comfortable for them. But a mantra is not

necessary to meditate. Roche says people can inducemeditation by doing anything simple and repetitive.

“You can start by taking anything visual you like to

look at or anything auditory you like to hear and stay

with it for longer than you ordinarily would,” he notes.

“Sit with it for five minutes and see what happens. You

can start with something simple and then later add

more sophistication to it.”

One of the biggest mistakes people make with

meditation is trying too hard. “People often feel likethey have to try to meditate and concentrate, but they

need to just set themselves free,” Roche says.

Also, going into your meditation and expecting an

amazing experience, such as an out of body experience,

can lead people to believe they are not doing it

correctly if these types of events don’t happen. But this

is simply not true, McLean says.

“Don’t look for any particular experience with your

meditation,” she says. “One of the myths of meditation

is that people think they have to have these fabulous

experiences right away or they are doing it wrong, but

the benefits of meditation show up after doing it a while,

and they show up in your life, not your meditation.”The process of meditation requires two things,

according to McLean. First, being willing to do it.

Secondly, being patient and committed until you find what

works. And the two things not to do are look for certain

experiences and try too hard. That will keep you at the

level of thought, and in meditation, the process is about

transcending or going beyond thought, she explains.

During meditation, a person can have an

innumerable amount of experiences — from

falling asleep to incessant thoughts. Here,

meditation expert and teacher Lorin Roche,

co-founder of Instinctive Meditation in Los Angeles,

explains these experiences.

Elevated Existence (EE): When I sit to meditate, there

are times that I check my watch every five minutes because

it seems time is moving so slowly, and then on another day,

30 minutes will go by and it feels like only three.

Roche: This happens to me too. Accept both these

extremes, and everywhere in between.

EE: I’ve had experiences during meditation where my mindis completely blank, and I feel like I’ve stopped breathing.

Roche: Accept this as a gift, and don’t expect it to

happen for more than a second or two. If it lasts longer,

fine. But even a little flash of this is refreshing.

EE: There are days when I sit to meditate and it seems

50,000 thoughts continue to flow through my mind, and

I have to keep concentrating on going back to my mantra.

Roche: On those days, don’t force yourself to go back.

It’s enough to just sit there and tolerate the sensations that

go with your to-do list. The basic thing the body/mind

system wants to do is convert anxiety and pressure into

excitement. Take the attitude of supporting this process.

Welcome the process of the brain sorting through its lists,

reviewing actions to be taken and choreographing the day.

EE: One time during a meditation, I realized I could

no longer feel my body at all. I felt like I was floatingabove and looking down on myself mediating.

Roche: This is what extreme relaxation feels like to

many people. If you can, arrange in advance to not be

interrupted when you are meditating.

EE: On some days I feel like I could meditate for

hours and on others, five minutes feels like too long,

and I can’t sit for a full 20 minutes.

Roche: Do what works for you. I recommend having

a schedule and more or less sticking to it. Set aside 20 or

30 minutes for your meditation, and if you are too

restless, have your journal and just sit there and write

about what is agitating you. Or get up and dance if you

do not want to sit still.

EE: I have had days where I sit and meditate during a

preplanned time, but sometimes I will meditate while I

am on the go, such as during my train commute or even

in the dentist chair to calm myself.

Roche: It is the same for me, even after 40 years of

meditation. I’ve gone for months when I just meditated

at odd moments, catch-as-catch-can. And other times, I

have meditated consistently. When I look back, I got

more done and made fewer mistakes when I was

meditating consistently.

EE: When I am meditating, there are moments where

I feel like I might have fallen asleep and my body jerkson its own and brings me back. I’m not sure if I fell

asleep or entered what is known as “the gap” between

my thoughts.

Roche: It is probably both. We all fall asleep in

meditation for a few seconds here and there, and

sometimes minutes. And on the way into sleep and out

of it, we pass through these gaps. EE

Heal Thyself When it comes to restoring and maintaining health,

we hold more power than we think. By Tammy Mastroberte

   {

   }

HOMEOPATHY, NATUROPATHY, HERBAL MEDICINE,ayurvedic and acupuncture — these are just a few

forms of alternative medicine available today. On

their own or in conjunction with conventional

medicine, these treatments have been provenbeneficial in the healing of an illness as well as its

prevention.

But while most of us seek a doctor, therapist or

alternative practitioner to treat and cure our

ailments, we often overlook the part we play in both

the cause and healing of them, and often they return

time and time again. Although we may know we are

more than just our physical body, when our heads

are pounding from a migraine or our throats are

sore from a virus, the mind and spirit are not our

main focus. Most of us focus on the body, looking

to alleviate pain and other symptoms of an illness.

And once the pounding stops or the throat is

soothed, we jump right back into our busy lives …

until the next symptom pops up. Do we ever stopand think what caused the pain? What was it that

suppressed our immune system and left us

susceptible to attracting an illness in the first place?

“Both the good in our lives and the dis-ease

[disease] are the results of mental thought patterns

that form our experiences,” said bestselling

motivational author and speaker Louise L. Hay, in

her book “Heal Your Body, The Mental Causes for

Physical Illnesses and the Metaphysical Way to

Overcome Them.”

Mental Causes for

“We’ve learned that for every effect in our lives,

there’s a thought pattern that precedes and maintains

it,” wrote Hay, who is also founder of Hay House

Inc. publishing company (www.hayhouse.com).

In her psychospiritual approach to healing, Carol

Ritberger Ph.D., medical intuitive and author of

“Healing Happens with Your Help,” views illness as

“the soul’s way of alerting the mind that something

we’re thinking or doing isn’t in alignment with our

spiritual nature,” she explained in her live on-

line seminar called “Healing

Happens,” produced this past

March by Hay House. “Your bodyis a barometer to let you know

when you are compromising

yourself and when you are not.”

While curing looks at the how

and what of illness, Ritberger

noted healing looks at the how,

why, what and when of illness.

Curing is when we look to

someone else to make us better,

but true healing goes deeper,

looking to alleviate the pain and symptoms of an

illness, but also examining what caused it in the first

place, she explained.

The psychospiritual approach “delves deeper

into the connection between illness and thoughts,

emotions and beliefs. It addresses the needs of the

soul, the mind and the body. Healing begins with

awareness and ends with change,” she said.

Viewing illness as a

disconnection between

the mind, body and spirit,

Ritberger explained we

were never designed to

become ill, and we must

remember we have thepower to heal ourselves. While others, such as

medical professionals, can help us in the healing

process, it is up to us to decide to heal. These are

two of the “seven tenants of healing” she

discussed in the seminar as well as in her book. If

we concentrate on healing our soul first, the mind

and the body will follow, she explained.

How do we heal our soul? The answer is love,

and more importantly, loving ourselves. “Only

love heals,” said Ritberger. “If we are going to

heal ourselves, we need to practice self-love.”

Caroline Myss, another medical intuitive and

author, referred to self-esteem as an essential

element of health during her live online seminar in

February 2008 called “Why Am I Feeling So Bad?

A Medical Intuitive’s Perspective on Health,” also

produced by Hay House.

“Without self-esteem, even a slight amount, true

healing cannot truly take place,” said Myss. “You

can’t fully shed the experience of disease because

you don’t have the power in your

soul to get rid of it. The greatest

curse is to be in this life withoutself-esteem. It’s essential to health.”

Each of us has 12 major arche-

types, or patterns of behavior, that

create our personalities, and four

of them are responsible for our

self-esteem, said Myss. The four

basic archetypes we all carry are

the Child, the Prostitute, the

Saboteur and the Victim.

“Each one of us goes through

challenges that have the flavor of one of these

archetypes,” said Myss. When gone awry, the

Child archetype can cause us to develop resistance

to responsibility and adulthood, while the

Prostitute represents our experiences in life where

we compromise ourselves to negotiate the security

of safety, she said. Examples of this are an abused

wife who stays in her marriage or a person who

can’t stand the company they work for, but stays

because he or she likes the paycheck. “In the end,

no self-esteem,” she said.

When symptoms of pain or illness show up in

our bodies, it is a physical manifestation of what

has been going on inside us — a reflection of our

behavior, including our words and actions, as well

as our beliefs, which are repetitive thoughts based

on earlier conditioning, said Ritberger.

Emotions and attitudes are also at the root of

disease. “It is our attitudes that really color how

we view our lives, and there are really only two —

optimistic and pessimistic,” she said.

However, at the root of all our behavior,

emotions and attitudes are our thoughts. It’s

thoughts that produce emotions, which create

attitudes that affect our behavior. “When you think

a thought, it creates energy that goes out into the

universe and attracts more of that same energy,”

noted Ritberger. “When we repeat the thoughts,

beliefs and attitudes, it shows up in our behavior,

and it ends up in our physical body as illness.”

To break the cycle, the only option we have isto change. Change our thoughts, our attitudes and

any destructive patterns we find ourselves in.

“The point of power is in the present moment...

right here and right now in our minds,” said Hay in

her book titled, “Heal Your Body”. She wrote, “It

doesn’t matter how long we’ve had negative patterns,

an illness, a rotten relationship, lack of finances or self-

hatred. We can begin to make a change today.”

By making a change on the inside, we can affect

ourselves on the outside. “At the end of the day,

everything comes down to you and your inner

voice,” said Myss. “Hold in sacred trust that voice.”

So the next time you feel pain, or another symptom

of an illness crop up, say to yourself, ‘What have I

been thinking about lately? How have I been treatingmyself and others? Who do I have to forgive? What

should I let go of?’ You just might heal yourself. EE

What is Reiki?A powerful wellness tool used by many reputable hospitals

throughout the world today, Reiki balances the body’s energy

so it can heal itself  By T Love

   {

   }

REIKI (PRONOUNCED RAY-KEE) IS A JAPANESE WORD

meaning Universal Life Force Energy — Rei,

meaning universal, and Ki, meaning life force. This

life force energy flows through everything in life,

completely surrounding us and sustaining life itself.Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, developed

the modern day practice in the early 1900s after

discovering ancient texts describing Reiki and its

ability to heal by manipulating the energy fields

found within and around all living things.

The human energy system is comprised of three

parts: the Meridians (energy pathways), the

Chakras (energy centers) and the Aura (energy

fields). Reiki influences all three parts, or energy

systems, simultaneously to liberate the body’s

natural healing power.

In very simple terms, Reiki balances the energy

of a person so he or she may heal more quickly.

We know that everything in our universe is

made up entirely of energy. Think back toEinstein’s equation e=mc

2

(energy = mass times the

speed of light squared.) What that really says is

everything, including our emotions, thoughts,

physical bodies and the physical world around us,

is made of energy.

What we experience as disease or dis-ease in the

body, whether on an emotional, mental or physical

level, is actually the manifestations of imbalances

in our body’s energy fields. So, what causes these

imbalances? Negative or pessimistic thoughts
