PRONG 3 – PARTICIPATION IN RECRUITMENT INITIATIVES AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

The Station Employment Unit for these stations has more than 10 full-time employees and broadcasts in a major market, (Seattle, WA). Therefore, it is required to engage in at least four (4) Outreach Activities in each two-year period. The KUOW Unit has engaged in more than four such activities as outlined below.

1. Establishment of an internship program RadioActive Youth Media The RadioActive Youth Media program was established by KUOW to become a place where youth discover public radio journalism and gain the tools they need to make their own stories. RadioActive’s flagship ‘Intro to Journalism’ workshops guide high school age youth with no journalism experience through the process of making professional-quality stories about their lives and communities. In so doing, they build critical communications and media literacy skills as well as self-confidence, curiosity and leadership. RadioActive also provides ongoing leadership development for Intro Workshop graduates and reaches more than 800 young people through pop-up journalism discovery workshops in schools and community centers around the region. The pop-up workshops serve marginalized youth, including incarcerated youth, migrant worker youth and refugees. All RadioActive workshops are offered free of charge, and youth who complete the flagship Intro Workshop receive a stipend and the opportunity to earn ongoing payments through their leadership work.

Introduction to Journalism Workshops The workshop is open to youth age 15-18 via a competitive application process. It is currently

offered once a year, in the summer. In 2018 the workshop expanded from serving 8 participants to serving 20. All 20 participants

successfully completed the workshop. The workshop meets 5 days a week for 6.5 weeks. Participants learn radio production and

journalism skills, and produce original content for kuow.org and 94.9 FM. Participants who successfully complete the workshop earn $1,200.

Advanced Producer Programs

Advanced Producers are youth who have graduated from a RadioActive Introduction to Journalism workshop. There is no upper limit to the age of these participants.

The Advanced Producer workshop meets regularly from January-April. Youth must apply and be accepted into the workshop. For successfully completing the workshop, they receive $1,200. There are two workshop tracks:

o Editorial committee members produce individual feature stories and collaborate on original podcasts.

o Community engagement committee members work on marketing and promotion. They plan and implement original community events.

Advanced Producers also attend trainings, outings and events throughout the year including meeting public radio and storytelling luminaries such as Ira Glass, Sarah Koenig, Sherman Alexie.

During the reporting period RadioActive held one Introduction to Journalism workshop and worked with 10 youth in the Advanced Producer Program.

KUOW, Seattle Advanced skill building in journalism and community engagement. Production of feature stories and podcasts. Marketing, promotion, and event production.

In addition to the core workshops RadioActive provides mobile and pop-up workshops out in the community.

Mobile workshops Skill-building workshops on interviewing, writing for radio and finding stories in your community. Offered in schools and community centers throughout the year (see list below).

Pop-up workshops Story production workshops for under-served communities that last from 1 day-several weeks. In FY18 we offered these pop-up workshops:

Echo Glen Children’s Center – October 2017 – 6 youth RadioActive worked with incarcerated youth for three Saturdays in a row. Participants learned audio recording, interviewing, scriptwriting, and audio editing. They wrote original short scripts and recorded their stories using professional microphones in a portable sound booth. Coalition for Refugees from Burma – November/December 2017 – 15 youth RadioActive worked with refugee youth from all over the world to learn radio storytelling skills and produce original short podcasts on topics of their choice. The meetings were held after school at Kent-Meridian High School once a week for six weeks, with a recording session at KUOW’s studios. Youth worked in small groups and were mentored by RadioActive graduates.

King County Interagency Detention Center - January, February, March 2018 – 20 youth RadioActive offered three day-long workshops at the Seattle Juvenile Detention Center for incarcerated youth. In these workshops students wrote and recorded original poems or interview-based audio stories. They listened and were inspired by other youth-produced radio pieces, learned the basics of digital audio recording, wrote original scripts on topics of their choice, and recorded their voice with professional microphones in a portable sound booth. They learned audio editing basics and had the opportunity to add music, sound effects, and recorded interview clips and sounds from within the workshop space to their finished pieces. Washington State University in the Tri Cities/NW Public Broadcasting – April 2018 – 11 youth RadioActive offered their first program in Eastern Washington: a two-day workshop for youth in the Tri-Cities area. Participants learned how to record and edit audio, write radio scripts, and record their voice in a professional studio. They were mentored by professional journalists and produced original short radio stories.

KUOW News Fellowship As of September 2018, KUOW is in the process of creating a paid fellowship within their newsroom. The news department’s “Region of Boom” team will pilot a four-month fellowship intended to attract a diverse pool of early-career journalists. The selected fellow will contribute to the team’s reporting while advancing journalism and radio skills with the mentoring of KUOW reporters and editors.

3. Participation in events sponsored by community organizations interested in broadcast employment issues

NPR Next Generation Radio Project

“The Next Generation Radio Project is a week-long digital journalism training project designed to give competitively selected participants, who are interested in radio and journalism, the skills and opportunity to report and produce their own multimedia story. Those chosen for the project are paired with a professional journalist who serves as their mentor.”

In July 2018 KUOW hosted six early career journalists (those with less than 5 years professional experience), 6 mentors and 6 staff (Managing Editor, Managing Editor in training, Web Editor, Web Producer, Audio Engineer and Illustrator) as part of NPR’s Next Generation Radio Project. KUOW reporter Ruby de Luna was a mentor and KUOW Reporter/Editor, Deborah Wang was the workshop’s managing editor for the week. KUOW was proud to support Next Generation Radio’s goal of getting a greater diversity of journalists into public media newsrooms. http://seattle2018.nextgenerationradio.org/ Public Media Virtual Career Fair On March 15, 2018 KUOW staff members participated in the Public Media Virtual Career Fair hosted by Current/PublicMediaJobs.org. During the three hour event two KUOW staff members live-chatted with 43 participants, answering questions on specific job openings and general questions on careers in broadcast and journalism. Resumes were forwarded to specific hiring managers and early career participants were connected with KUOW employees willing to provide additional advice and mentorship. Additional community outreach

Race & Equity Committee

In May 2016, KUOW established a Race & Equity Committee with representation from every department in an effort to have a broad, station-wide understanding of this work. During 2018 this committee continued its work to create parameters for the committee’s work, a mission statement, goals and objectives. One of the identified goals of the committee is to “examine hiring policies and practices” with an equity lens.

In September 2018 the committee finalized its Statement of Diversity and Racial Equity Principles – see below.

KUOW’s Statement of Diversity and Racial Equity Principles

KUOW and its Board of Directors (“KUOW”) are committed to diversity, racial equity and inclusiveness. Diversity refers to individual and group differences based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, class and religion. KUOW seeks to promote understanding and appreciation of these differences in order to address racism, bigotry, unconscious bias and other forms of intolerance in places we can impact.

Achieving racial equity and diversity is an ongoing process which KUOW believes will lead to an inclusive and high performance culture, fulfilling our mission to create and serve a more informed public. KUOW understands that success in achieving racial equity requires commitment from the leadership of our organization at both the board and staff levels. This commitment must extend over time, with an understanding that there are no “quick fixes” to systemic inequity, but there are actions we can take as an organization to progress forward. These problems are complex, and we strive to be courageous; and guided by our values, we strive for a culture in which all can participate, prosper and reach their full potential.

KUOW promotes diversity within our organization in order to:

reflect the racial, ethnic, and other characteristics of the communities we serve

promote greater understanding of and respect for the diversity within these communities

recognize and amplify these communities’ voices

build on the strengths of diverse backgrounds to develop strong leadership

achieve the highest level of effectiveness and well informed decision making

KUOW will advance these goals by:

living our core values

recruiting diverse staff and board members

committing to develop cultural competence

funding training programs that deal with race relations and culture

funding specific efforts that promote leadership development

actively seeking diverse voices for on-air and digital content

creating opportunities to be visible or present in underserved communities The Race and Equity Committee has created specific hiring goals for KUOW to work towards in 2019 and beyond. University of Washington EOE Statement KUOW is a self-sustaining department of the University of Washington, as such it follows the hiring rules, policies and procedures of the University and the State of Washington. Employment practices and salaries are frequently reviewed by the University of Washington. “The University of Washington is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, age, protected veteran or disabled status, or genetic information.”
