Motivation Observations

Being motivated by survival needs is not destructive if it does not become a lifetime focus without a purpose driven vision.

Are the motivations we just discussed, survival, self-image and purpose all essential for a well balanced life?

Have any of your motivational desires changed as a result of EFC class teaching?

Be sure your emotions are not the controlling factor while making motivational choices.

Myths

Myth # 1Motivation can’t last!!!

Fact: Well, being motivated can become temporary, just like bathing or eating.

Initial motivation will get us enthused.

Establishing the habit of frequently reviewing a developing vision as an integral part of the motivation will help both in firming it up and also in maintaining it until our goals are achieved.

Let’s review Proverbs 23:7a

For as we think within ourselves, so we become.

Page 9: Efc exposing motivational mythesx

Action Steps for Myth #1Have a quiet prayerful time each morning; prioritize and write your goals and agenda for the day. Each month, have a quiet spiritual renewal time and then review annual goals and progress.Even if you don’t accomplish everything, you will experience more efficiency and your level of fatigue will be subdued as sustained motivation stimulates creativeness and disciplined direction.

Winners don’t fade – Faders don’t win!!!Obedience and discipline will take you further than talent and ability!!!

Myth # 2Life is tough; what can I do???http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gc4HGQHgeFE&feature=player_embedded

Action Steps for Myth #2Life is not fair; GET OVER IT – “Choose” to live joyously.Practice gratitude. STOP comparing equities and inequities.Change what you can – Live with what you can’t. Accept who you are and prepare for the journey. Stop missing your blessings while restlessly longing for a way to find happiness. Happiness is a result, not a goal. Dedicate life to finding peace using the resources you have. Peace is not the absence of conflict, it’s discovering purpose. Get a perspective on how unimportant present circumstances and situations are in comparison to the promises of eternity.

Discover purpose and be motivated. You’re not the author of life; you are living out providence!Remember – it’s a cause and effect world we live in!

Page 14: Efc exposing motivational mythesx

Myth # 3I can’t find what motivates me!!!

Many find their only motivation from seeking ways to maintain life’s demands. If paying bills is your only motivation, that’s what life will be about. Develop a passion for discovering a serving type purpose!!!

There are TWO master motivators:1 - Fear / Worry; 2 - Love / Passion

Which of these masters you now???Survival fears may motivate love & passion actions. That is normal and OK if it does not become a vision destroyer.Love and passion should also become the motivation for a creative purpose. Let’s make sure that happens!!!I am motivated by the joy of motivating others.

Page 15: Efc exposing motivational mythesx

Action Steps for Myth #3KNOW - We are each created for purpose.

OUR UNIQUENESSRemember: Today you are you, truer then true.

Make a list of people or experiences that have been a motivational influence in your life. When you have a season of discouragement or depression, seek out those motivators or review the memories of those lessons and experiences.Always rememberremember:: Our greatest motivations involve a serving attitude. Our greatest reward will be the experience of “JOY” from being motivated to serve.

Recognize money as a tool, not a goal.

Page 16: Efc exposing motivational mythesx

Myth # 4I’m trained and educated, I don’t need motivation to excel.“How to” is not the same as the “Want to”What keeps us going??? It is not knowledge!

It’s Our Character (Attitude)

It’s Our Discipline Level (Priorities)

It’s Our Commitment Level (Purpose)

It’s Our Responsibility Level (Servanthood)

Page 17: Efc exposing motivational mythesx

Action Steps for Myth #4Eight questions to guide our motivation:Who has helped you build good character?Whose character are you helping to build?Who has helped you to have commitment?Whose commitment level are you building?Who taught you disciplined work ethics?Who is observing your discipline pattern?Who taught you to take responsibility?Who is learning responsibility from you?

Page 18: Efc exposing motivational mythesx

Myth # 5Believing in myself is the only encouragement I’ll ever need. The truth: We will thrive on feedback from others. Cultivate an environment that encourages it.Know this: You don’t know everything that could apply to accomplishing your goals and visions.Pride and ego are the enemies of information, knowledge and wisdom.Real humility is not a self deprecating persona, it is knowing the source of our providence.

Page 19: Efc exposing motivational mythesx

Action Steps for Myth #5

Who do you know that is more informed than you in the subjects involving your activities?

If you say no one – you’re in deep trouble!!!

Seek the experts out and buy their lunch.

If that doesn't work, buy an hour of their time.

If they are a competitor – make friends!

Next: Who will be an accountability partner when you establish your goals and visions? Everyone needs accountability to someone.

Page 20: Efc exposing motivational mythesx

Myth # 6I will depend on the motivation of others to fill my goals.Motivation is like a tool. It is used to provide a purpose, service or a product. When applied improperly it may become a manipulation of others for selfish desires.Motivation stimulates us to serve others.Manipulation maneuvers others to satisfy our desires.

Page 21: Efc exposing motivational mythesx

Action Steps for Myth #6  Remember an earlier EFC lesson about multiple motives? 1 Samuel 17:26 David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised (unrepentant) Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God???” (Two motives are expressed)

Most activities involve two motives:

A primary motive: Servanthood.A secondary motive: Filling our needs.

When the primary remains 1st expect our Lord’s BLESSINGS.When the secondary becomes 1st we may miss the blessing. We may be reduced to depending only on resources and intellect in our motivation to achieve our goals and visions.

Are God’s blessings prevailing in your activities?
