One day during my second round with the EFC, I noticed that my counterpart was translating a vocabulary

word differently than from what another teacher taught. The frequency of this increased over the next week.

Students in 10A, for example, were learning one word, while 10C was learning another.

The idea for this book began to form.

As I was most often the one to teach vocabulary, it also came down to me to create a definition all

students would understand. At times, I found myself struggling to put into plain text a good definition.

Now the idea for this book was fully formed.

I wanted a guide to streamline my already lengthy vocabulary lessons. I wanted a guide that had a

learner’s definition, Khmer translation and Khmer phonetics. Mostly so all of my classes would have the same

translations and if I was stuck in class alone (though very rare), I would be able to confidently teach vocabulary as

well as review.

In this book, you will find each word from the EFC teacher’s guide (that they want you to teach) as well as

suggested words from the text that students may find difficult.

This is not meant to be a definitive teaching guide, but merely an assistant. As the EFC is primarily British

English, I provided the American replacement/spelling when necessary in parenthesis. For words that have

multiple parts of speech or definitions, I used the one that is provided in the text. The same goes for translations.

Many words will have a few translations, but only the one that is most relevant to the text or most commonly used

is provided. As for the phonetics, they are a combination of three people’s work (Sorphorn, Saeed and myself) and

while we tried to remain consistant, I apologize if they are difficult to understand.

Enjoy!
