“In addition, nitrification is pH-sensitive and rates of nitrification will decline significantly at pH values below 6.8. Therefore, itis important to maintain anadequate alkalinity in the aerationtank to provide pH stability andalso to provide inorganic carbon for nitrifiers.”

At higher pH valuesof 7.0 to 7.4 SU, where wastewateroperations are typically conducted, not all alkalinity measured to a pHof 4.5 is available for use.
