Vocabulary

• Cutaway: Video shifts or cuts to a still photograph, over music or narration. Photo can be panned, zoom in or out or stay still. Default time 4 seconds

• Horizontal works best• Portraits must be panned and given more time (6 seconds)• Ken Burns Effect

• B‐roll: Background video footage. • Very effective. Appears 2‐10 seconds• Watch news cast• Effective in combination with a longer interview

• Inset: Picture in picture• Transition: Similar to PowerPoint

Filming • Horizontal!• Tripod, monopod, selfie stick• Consider a script. Large Font• Pay attention to the background• Pay attention outside to wind shear• Ask subject to work in any questions into the answer (interviews)

• Ask subject to pause in between paragraphs

• Ask subject for passive face when finished• Look for branding opportunities

Video Length

• First 10 seconds are most important ‐ Hook• One to three minutes for a commercial or promotion• Two to four minutes for a “how to” or tutorial• Break up longer topics• Facebook: No limit ‐ Statistics• YouTube: No limit – Get a Gmail account!  Statistics• Twitter: Two minutes, 20 seconds• Instagram: One minute

Music

• Optional• Often used with bumpers• Must use royalty free, or public domain jingles

• (limited on iPad/iPhone) • Desktop iMovie >Sound Effects > Jingles

• Careful with copyright• Buying a song on iTunes and using it in any uploaded video is a violation of terms

• Determine the length of your video• Determine the target audience• Is anyone being video tapped?• Will there be a voice over narration? • Only photos and b‐roll? Consider music.• Does humor have a place

Still images

• Average length to appear is 4 seconds• Horizontal or landscape orientation works best• Portrait or vertical photos must be panned –best to add 2 seconds

• Ken Burns Effect is optional• Pixabay.com is a great source of public domain photos

• Minors must have photo releases• Get permission on voice recorder

• Adults verbal permission or photo releases

Optimize for Social Media• Upload to YouTube if video is to play on a website or blog

• Tag with keywords• Short description• Snappy title. How might end user search? Title with terms they use!

• Facebook• Upload same video to Facebook• Do not link to YouTube on Facebook

• Twitter• If video is longer than two minutes, 20 seconds, share YouTube Link• Under 2:20 upload directly into Twitter
