The numbers dont lie

Nearly 100 percent of college students and 92 percent of nonstudents in the 18-24 age range were Internet users. By comparison, only 75 percent of adults nationally report using the Internet (Zou, 2011).

"Students inhabit a 21st century world for 18 hours a day," Tracy says. "And, all too often, educators put them in a 19th century classroom for six hours of that day, and the students feel a tremendous disconnect. We have a responsibility to teach them the skills to optimize these tools (Machielse, 2011)

Media use among children and teenagers ages 8 to 18 has grown so fast that they on average spend twice as much time with screens each year as they spend in school (Richtel, 2012). Ask What does a 21st century learner look like? What skills and knowledge is a 21st century learner responsible for obtaining during his/her education? How do we, as educators, fulfill this in combination with the rigorous requirements of the Common Core standards?2TechnologyDictionary DefinitionsAccording to Websters College Dictionary (2010), technology is a technological process, invention, or method or the sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material objects of their civilization. According to Merriam-Webster (2014), technology isa manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge

How has the definition of technology changed over your own lifetime? How has the definition of technology and the tools used to implement technology changed over the course of your career? 3Think about your own definition of technologyHow has your definition or perception of technology changed over time?

Discuss your thoughts with a partner. Find one thing your both agree on and one thing you disagree about.

The numbers dont lieThe national survey of 1,000 students in Grades 6 through 8 found that: 39 percent use smartphones for homework.26 percent use smartphones at least weekly for homework.31 percent use tablets for homework (Khadaroo, 2012)

Roughly 75 percent of 2,462 teachers surveyed said that the Internet and search engines had a mostly positive impact on student research skills (Richtel, 2012).Who had a beeper growing up?Who had one of the first commercialized cell phones?Who remembers roaming charges?Who had a Blackberry?Who texts in here?Smartphone users?Whose children/grandchildren have cell phones?5TechnologYAccording to the national Center for educational statisticsTechnology in Schools: The collection of electric and electronic devices, and related institutional and individual behaviors and practices, that are used in support of administrative and instructional applications in public and private educational settings in the United States (NCES, 2003). Technology Resources:The hardware, software, networks and networking capability, staff, dollars and context which together can be used in the implementation of a technology solution (NCES, 2003).

How do teachers really feel?90 percent said that digital technologies were creating an easily distracted generation with short attention spans.

685 teachers surveyed in the Common Sense project, 71 percent said they thought technology was hurting attention span somewhat or a lot. 60 percent said it hindered students ability to write and communicate face to face, and almost half said it hurt critical thinking and their ability to do homework (Richtel, 2012).How do teachers really feel?

Are teachers fearful that technology is taking the place of learning?Have you seen a negative impact of technology use in your students behaviors and work? How do we, as educators, combat the negative components of technology and harness the benefits to use in our classroom to support learning and growth?Discuss.8How do teachers really feel about technology being integrated into the curriculum?Share in the debate! We want to know what YOU think!

It must support four key components of learning: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts.

Effective technology integration happens when the use of technology is routine and when technology supports curricular goals.

Integration must happen across the curriculum in ways that research shows deepen and enhance the learning process.

Discuss: what active engagement looks like in an educational setting.Ways in which students can participate in group work.Ways to provide frequent interaction and feedback to learners (relate to teacher evaluation)Ways to provide connections to real-world experts (relate to teacher evaluation)

Use of technology must be part of the instructional and evaluative routine in the classroom and be transparent.
