The thermal effects have been largely studied and refer to the heat that is generated due toabsorption of microwave radiation. Being exposed to the thermal effect could cause fatigue,cataracts and reduced mental concentration.

The SAR value has been fixed and specified for cell phones to limit the thermal damage.

Non thermal Effects

Research is going on to study the non-thermal effects of radiation. An interministerial committeehas acknowledged the harmful effects of these radiations on humans and other impacts on the

environment.

Effect of electro Magnetic Radiations is more pronounced where the movement of the fluid is less,for example, cornea of the eye does not have the temperature regulation mechanism andexposure of 2-3 hours duration has been reported to produce cataracts (clouding of lens) in eyes.

WHO classifies EMF as carcinogenic

Mobiles cut sperm count

It has been found that 30% sperm decrease in intensive mobile phone users, in addition todamage of sperms. Not only did using the phone affect a man's sperm count and the motility(speed of movement) of the sperm, but simply having it switched ON in a pocket was enough todo damage as mobile phones periodically but briefly transmit information to cell towers toestablish contact.

Cell Phone Radiation Changes Brain Metabolism:

A well-regarded and influential team of researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)and the Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) is on the brink of resolving a long-standing dispute withenormous implications for public health. In a paper, Nora Volkow and coworkers are reporting that

cell phone radiation can affect the normal functioning of the human brain.

Using positron emission tomography (PET), the NIH-BNL researchers have shown that radiationfrom a 50-minute cell phone exposure can speed up glucose metabolism, an established measureof brain activity. The finding is highly statistically significant. What is particularly remarkable aboutthe new work is that those regions of the brain that were most highly exposed to phone radiationhad the largest increases in metabolic activity.

Cell Phone Brain Scans: In the study, 47 healthy subjects, nearly evenly split between men andwomen, were outfitted with a cell phone on each ear. Glucose metabolism was measured usingPET scans, a technique first developed at BNL in the 1970s. Each participant was scanned twice,once when the right-hand phone was turned on and once when both phones were off (the phoneswere kept muted and the subjects were unaware when one of the phones was active). The phone

exposures lasted 50 minutes and the PET scans were started five minutes after the phone wasturned off. They reflect the average brain activity over a 30-minute period.

Although glucose metabolism was not altered for the brain as a whole, there were significanteffects in those locations closest to the phone, the right orbitofrontal cortex (see the arrowhead inthe figure on the left below) and parts of the temporal lobe. These areas of the brain have beenshown to have the highest RF radiation exposures when using a mobile phone. As Volkow explains:The "regions expected to have the greatest absorption of RF-EMFs from the cell phone exposurewere the ones that showed the larger increases in glucose metabolism."

Mobile phones are more dangerous than smoking:

Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winningcancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and thatgovernments and the mobile phone industry must take "immediate steps" to reduce exposure totheir radiation.

The study, by Dr Vini Khurana, is the most devastating indictment yet published of the healthrisks.

It draws on growing evidence exclusively reported in the IoS in October that using handsetsfor 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Earlier this year, the French government

warned against the use of mobile phones, especially by children. Germany also advises its peopleto minimise handset use, and the European Environment Agency has called for exposures to be

reduced.

Provocation Study using Heart Rate Variability shows Radiation from 2.4 GHz CordlessPhone affects Autonomic Nervous System

The effect of pulsed microwave radiation on heart rate variability (HRV) was tested in a doubleblind study.Based on self-assessments, participants classified themselves as extremely electricallysensitive (24%), moderately (16%), slightly (16%), not sensitive (8%) or with no opinion (36%)about their sensitivity. The top 10 symptoms experienced by those claiming to be sensitive includememory problems, difficulty concentrating, eye problems, sleep disorder, feeling unwell,headache, dizziness, tinnitus, chronic fatigue, and heart palpitations. Government-funded study shows radiation impact on male fertility, free radicals:

An ongoing study on radiation from mobile towers and mobile phones at the Jawaharlal NehruUniversity (JNU) has found that the exposure to radiation from mobile towers and mobile phones

could have an adverse impact on male fertility and also pose health hazards by depleting thedefence mechanism of cells.

Chronic exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation [RF-EMW] caused double-strandDNA breaks in sperm cells. The tests showed that mobile radiation exposure can cause a

statistically significant decrease in the sperm count and testes weight"

Other studies too have shown that use of cell phones adversely affects the quality of semen bydecreasing sperm count, motility, viability and morphology, which might contribute to maleinfertility,.

Tests have shown significant increase in ROS [reactive oxygen species a kind of free radical]level in radiation exposed ratsan increased ROS production can damage macromolecules [lipid,protein, DNA], thus causing threat of heart disease, cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease andaccelerate ageing. Electromagnetic field increases the concentration of free radicals which mayenhance the probability of damage to the biological system. "

Formation of free radicals in the brain is a matter of concern because of their potential toxiceffects at high levels of brain function and its physiology and command on several other organs. Itis well established that when there is an imbalance between free radicals and its neutralization, itleads to oxidative stress. Such conditions can lead to tumor promotion.
