THE PARLIAMENTARY REVIEW

Highlighting best practice

Los Angeles consist of 80 employees

with skills in project and account

management.

Specialists in our field

Our specialism is in transporting all

the equipment that is required to put

on an event. We started by working

predominantly with music artists,

before branching out into sports,

theatre and live events in 2005. This

proved to be a profitable move for the

business, but it also allowed us to offer

a broader and more comprehensive

service. We can transport equipment

door-to-door across the world and

use our own offices and a network of

international agents, to co-ordinate

logistics at each stage in the process.

The work is highly pressurised, as we

face the threat that if we don’t deliver

on time or with all parts intact, the

show or event cannot begin.

Due to the steps we have taken

to guarantee a reliable end-to-end

service, we have established a strong

global reputation. We have also built

strong working relationships with

contractors and similar companies

in every country in which our clients

operate and continue to develop new

partnerships as we look to expand

our reach. Each project is treated as a

puzzle to solve, whereby we look for

a balance between the fastest, most

cost-effective and safest solutions. We

have managed to achieve this with

remarkable consistency, and as a result

our clients continue to trust us.

Project management is central to our

role and therefore we are careful to

handpick partners with whom we

can work efficiently. We deliver our

instructions to each organisation and

individual involved at various stages in

the process, before, where necessary,

sending one of our professionals to

oversee the process in person. The

level of management allows us to offer

a wider array of services including

logistical consultancy, event logistics

planning and scheduling, sensitive

and dangerous goods transportation,

vehicle transportation, management

of worldwide complex torch relays,

trophy tours and ceremonies, liaison

with local authorities and promoters,

baggage transfers, bespoke packing,

containerisation and warehousing.

Examples of our recent projects include

shipping 50 tonnes of equipment for

16 bands in South America. In just 24

hours the equipment was moved from

the stage in Bogotá to the stage in São

Paulo using two charter aircraft. This

was followed by back-to-back charters

from Buenos Aires to Santiago – the

first time this has been done for a

festival with this many acts. One artist

came off stage at 1am in Buenos Aires

and was on site in Santiago by 1pm

the same day.

EFM was brought in to manage the

logistics for a last-minute, high-profile

event for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Ministry for Energy, in the remote city

of Waad Al-Shamal. Over the space

of ten days in November 2018, we

stepped into our client’s team on just

24 hours’ notice, to pull out all the

stops, in the desert, 1,400 kilometres

from any major city. We arranged

three IL76 bulk-loading aircraft

charters from Dubai to Turaif in KSA

within 48 hours for each flight, while

35 trucks were dispatched by road,

which included complicated customs

border clearances. Ten tonnes of

broadcasting equipment were sent

via airfreight from Europe, which

included arranging import permissions:

carpet, fabric, truss, tents, technology,

communications equipment, lights,

sound, video, props and scenic décor

were safely delivered via air and road

freight from Europe, UAE and Oman.

Adapting and improving

With the company approaching its

20th anniversary next year, our focus

is centred on securing our future and

improving in certain areas that have

caused us challenges. One notable

obstacle that plays a role in our sector

is the issue of security, something

that has grown significantly during

my time in the business. While

safety is very important to us, some

of the restrictions prevent us from

conducting our job properly despite

our commitment to security.

For example, lithium batteries have

recently become a major concern

for airlines, which affects us because

of how commonly they are used by

our clients. We may find our options

restricted due to the quantity or type

of battery being shipped and this can

prove time-consuming and costly, as

well as impractical when dealing with

clients with inflexible and demanding

schedules. We can be limited to a

certain number of airlines on specific

routes, but it is a problem we are

managing with more detailed planning

and client discussions.

We are currently one year into a five-

year growth plan that is driving our

sustainable development. In the past

year we raised revenue by 35 per cent

and have seen a further 95 per cent

increase so far in 2019 compared with

the same period last year. To deliver

on our aims, we are continuing to

analyse how we work with our clients,

while we are looking at potential

restructuring and refocusing in order

to ensure we improve and perform

the exact service our clients need. In

the last two months, new projects in

Saudi Arabia have been a significant

boost and we are confident that with

our Dubai office, we are well placed

to exploit new opportunities in the

Middle East.
