Features

More than half a century ago Biffi started its business in valve actuation.

Its world-wide leadership has been built through continuous innovation and the ability

to face the new challenges that a fast changing environment comes up with.

It was in 1992 that Biffi started its intelligent actuator campaign.

Since then Biffi Intelligent actuators have been welcomed by all major companies

around the world, in many different applications: platforms, deep tropical forest, Siberian chill and harsh

desert environment.

With ICON2000, we made a further step forward towards ease of use and maintenance.

Release 2004 of ICON2000 introduces a new philosophy in the construction of electric actuators

electronic cards: all major optional functions are integrated in the base card, which allows easy plug-in of

future upgrades.

EFS2000 is the latest step in the acknowledgement of Biffi product quality and reliability. EFS2000 inte-

grates in one single actuator all the advanced technological solutions of the ICON2000v4 with a strong

and reliable spring-return mechanism for safe applications.

coming from the sensors: diagnostic messages are displayed in one of the available languages,

so that there is no need to decipher complicated codes.

The set of messages is complete both with alarms and warnings.

Partial Stroke Test (PST)The PST is proposed as an essential part of the diagnostics.

Through a specific procedure a partial stroke test function can be carried out to check the

functionality of the essential parts achieve the EFS safety function while the valve/actuator

is in line and in service.

The EFS2000 actuator consists of six main parts: 1. a spring return mechanism, which moves the valve in the foreseen fail-safe condition when requested

by an ESD signal or by a motor power failure.

2. a multiturn electric actuator which operates, through an epicyclic gear reduction (3) the valve during

normal working conditions and in the mean time compress the spring when the operation is in

opposite direction to the fail safe direction.

3. an epicyclic gear reduction, which increment the torque of the multi turn actuator and transform the

stroke into a quarter turn value.

4. an electro-magnetic clutch which hold in position the female wheel of epicyclic gear (3) during the

normal operation and release it in case of fail-safe function.

5. an hydraulic control group which is necessary to adjust the fail-safe speed and to manually operate

the actuator by means of a hand-pump in case of power failure.

6. a local control and configuration panel which is utilised to configure the functional parameters and to

operate locally (OPEN/CLOSE/OFF-EMERGENCY/RESET) the

actuator when electric power is present.

Working PrincipleThe spring return system is kept in fail safe position by helical springs. During the normal operation the

multi-turn turn electric actuator transmits the movement to the valve through the epicyclic gearing reduc-

tion and to the spring return mechanism through the rack.

Spring return mechanism is based on rack-pinion mechanism; the rack is connected in one side to the

spring and in the other side to the hydraulic cylinder; pinion of rack-pinion mechanism is connected to

the valve stem.

Input shaft of the epicyclic gearing reduction is connected the multi-turn actuator output shaft; output

shaft of the epicyclic gearing reduction is connected to the pinion of rack-pinion mechanism. The female

wheel of the epicyclic reduction is reversible: during normal operation it is kept on position by means of

a electromagnetic clutch which hold the worm shaft connected to the epicyclic gearing.

The coil of the electromagnetic clutch is normally fed by a direct current from separated external power

source, or derived from motor power voltage, through a supply module.

When the ESD condition occurs, the supply to the electromagnetic clutch is cut causing the disconnec-

tion of system which hold the worm shaft: in this conditions the epicyclic gearing become reversible cau-

sing the movement of the actuator on the fail condition by the effect of the spring.

To avoid dangerous shock to the valve during the ESD action, an hydraulic damper is mounted on the

spring system, whit an adjustable flow control orifice to be set to obtain the specified ESD times.

Position of the valve is continuously monitored both in electric mode, both in fail-safe condition, by

means of a position sensor directly connected the EFS output drive.

After a Fail-Safe action, a local RESET is required, through the local control panel.

Emergency Closing OperationIn case of electric supply failure the electromagnetical lach opens and the actuator moves the valve in

closing position by spring

Control Group FunctionsEFS2000 are equipped with an Hydraulic Control Group with two base functions:

Adjustment of fail safe time

Manual override function to operate the EFS when electrical power is not available.

Adjustment of fail safe time is done trough the flow control valve (528).

Manual override through the hand pump (540).

Before to perform the local manual operation by hand-pump it is necessary to guarantee that the electromagnetic

clutch is open: press the pushbutton OFF (Red mushroom) on the local control panel to be sure that clutch is really open.

After the above operation, using a local two-positions (AUTO/MANUAL) hydraulic selector (998), select the local

operation mode and successively through the hand pump manual operation can be carried out.

At the end of manual operation, if the actuator is required to remain in the position opposite to the spring, it is

necessary to leave the hydraulic selector in MANUAL position.

To restore the electric mode function the hydraulic selector must be moved to AUTO position and, as soon the

electrical power is available, the red mushroom pushbutton must be pressed to RESET the actuator.

Select then LOCAL or REMOTE position, on the local control panel, according to the wanted type of operation.

...in cost reduction and user-friendliness

The reduced number of mechanical parts ensures higher reliability and lower

maintenance costs.

The aluminium alloy highly resistant housing and covers, together with a lower number of

joints, have increased EFS capacity to stand up to the most aggressive environments.

A double-sealed enclosure assures protection from dust and humidity. The choice of internal

components has increased the overall system efficiency (the motor is directly engaged to the

gears) lowering the operational costs.

Reduction of training costs is also one of the goals we have achieved through

the user-friendliness of the system.

No more codes to decipher: the EFS menu is clear and easy, and comes with all the following

languages: Italian, English, Spanish, Portuguese, French,Turkish, Russian and Norwegian.

Torque sensor

The direct measure of the motor speed reports torque with high precision and a resolution

of 1% of the nominal torque. Torque detection is based on motor torque vs. speed characteristics,

voltage and temperature compensated. The torque vs. speed curve is memorised for each type of

motors and in case of motor replacement simply a new configuration from the actuator local control

panel is requested.

Position sensor

Low power consumption, long-life, absolute position sensor controlled by a dedicated microprocessor.

Rotations in both senses are recognised and counted.

If manually operated during power failure, the position is updated, stored and displayed locally.

Electronic card: the latest technology

The card is controlled by an high-performance microchip, with a slash memory.

This allows high flexibility and the possibility to be re-programmed if necessary.

The internal wiring is considerably reduced.

The modular design of the electronic cards allows high flexibility for a great variety

of combinations. All the electronic cards are treated with a tropicalisation protection in order to

increase the performances even in the most severe enviromental conditions.

The base version is an intelligent actuator with hardwired (i.e. point-to-point) connection.

High profile standards: all major features are included in the base version.Automatic phase correctionThe valve will be protected as the system automatically recognises and corrects phases

preventing any unforeseen error in the rotation direction.

Phase failure correctionIn case of loss of one phase, this features prevents the motor from overheating. The minimum time to set the

alarm on is 100 ms, in order to prevent the system from being influenced by casual

oscillations. In case of loss of one phase during motor running, the actuator will reach

the end-of-travel position before setting the alarm condition and de-energising the actuator.

Motor thermostatIf during operation the temperature of the motor overrides the security limits, a thermostat

will set the alarm condition and the command signal will be inhibited.

Jammed valve protectionIf, after a command (close/open), the valve position does not change within a pre-set time,

an alarm condition is set and the command signal will be inhibited.

The pre-set time can be any time within an interval of 2 to 100 seconds.

Anti-hammer protectionThis feature will protect both the motor and the valve. If a torque limit is reached it will

prevent the valve from moving in the same direction which caused the torque limit.

Instantaneous reversal protectionWhen the actuator is operating in one direction and an immediate command for a reverse

direction is set, unpredicted current surges arise with possible damages to the motor.

To prevent such problems, a delay between the opposite commands can be programmed

from 500 ms to 5 seconds.

WarningsWarning signals become active when the operating conditions are close to a critical alarm level.

Warning is displayed but operation is not interrupted.

Remote controlsThree different configurations are available:

- 4 wires (OP, CL, Stop, C/latched)

- 3 wires (OP, CL, C/push-to-run or latched with instant reverse)

- 2 wires (NO contact to open or reverse)

Control voltage- 24Vdc, internal supply

- 20 to 125 Vdc, external supply

Page 16: Efs Brochure 11-2010

Emergency Shutdown (ESD)When an ESD signal is received, the actuator performs the ESD programmed action,

moving on the fail position under the action of the spring.

The ESD action is performed by default when the ESD signal is sent.

Other conditions for ESD can be configured through the local interface:

- ESD in case of loss of main power;

- ESD in case of Local Selector selected in OFF position

- ESD by an emergency local pushbutton (mushroom type).

Local RESETAfter an ESD action, normal operation can be restored after a Local RESET through

the local pushbutton, or rather be automatically restored, depending on configuration.

Analogic position retransmissionThrough 4-20mA with galvanic insulation

Remote output contacts7 voltage-free latching contacts and 1 change-over, voltage-free contact of relays

are available for remote indication.

They can all be configured as Normally Open or Normally

Closed for one of the following conditions:

- Fully open

- Fully closed

Monitor relayWhen the actuator is not available for remote control, an alarm condition is set through a Monitor Relay with a

change-over type, voltage free contact.

The Monitor Relay is normally energized and will be de-energized under one of the following conditions:

- loss of main power - speed sensor failure

- loss of one phase - HW error

- internal temperature alarm - mid-travel alarm

- electrical contactors failure - configuration error

- position sensor failure - EFS mid-travel alarm

- EFS in manual mode

The following other conditions can be individually configured to switch over the Monitor Relay:

- motor over temperature - Manual operation selected

- over torque - ESD action

- jammed valve - Local STOP pushbutton pressed

- LOCAL or OFF selected - Low battery

Contactor failureAs one of the vital parts of the actuators, contactors are continuously monitored. If a malfunction

is detected an alarm is set and the command is inhibited.

Maximum torque alarmDuring torque operation, if the current torque exceeds the relevant set value, the actuator

command is inhibited and an alarm condition is set.

Opto-coupled remote controlsActuator may be remotely controlled by 4, 3 or 2 wires, depending on the connection on

the terminal board. Several options are available: latched, momentary, etc...

Torque alarm by-passDuring opening command, starting from open/closed position it is possible to set an

interval from 0% to 20% of the total stroke where torque alarm is ignored.

This will allow the actuator to win the Break-to-open torque.

High/Low electronic temperatureThrough a semiconductor-based temperature sensor, the temperature in the electronic card is

detected and an alarm condition is set on reaching the lowest/highest limits.

The standard thread is NPT and diameter is:

- one with 11/2"

- two with 1"

- one with 3/4" (optional)

ISO Rc 7/1, ISO metric BS3643 and DIN 40430/PG and different diameters are available as options.

Data logger“Data logger” is available for collecting different types of data useful in maintenance or diagnostic

programs. Since the amount of collected data is quite large, the data logger must be downloaded

onto a Pc/Pda through Irda or BluetoothTM connection to be viewed.

The main functions of the Data logger are:

- RECORDER mode: measurement and memorisation of main

voltage supply (V), motor temperature (C°), electronics

compartment temperature (C°), with configurable sampling time and start date and time (up to 256 sets

of measures can be memorised)

- EVENT mode: memorisation of Open or Close commands, with indication of source, date and time.

Configurable Start date and time. Up to 128 events can be memorised.

- T-RECORDER mode: measurement and memorization of torque in opening (%), torque in closing (%),

motor temperature (C°), electronic compartment temperature (C°) with configurable sampling time,

start and time. The last 256 measures are continuously memorised. When a torque alarm arises the

T-recorder stops.

A large variety of optional modules can be added to the base version.

If the option you are looking for is not listed below, please contact Biffi.

Fieldbus interfacesICON2000 modular design is easily upgraded from base-to-base to bus versions. You just need to

add the relevant plug-in card.

ICON2000 flexible interface allows connection to the major field bus available on the market:

Foundation Fieldbus

Profibus DPV0, DPV1 and redundant DPV1

LonWorks

Hart

Modbus

Please ask our Sales people for specific requirements.

Position Servoamplifier Module (PSM)The module is necessary for actuators in modulating and inching duty. It drives the motor through

pulses at constant frequency and duration proportional to the position error, following an externally

set analogical point signal.

The basic features are:

Input: 4-20 mA or 0-20 mA with galvanic insulation

Output: 4-20 mA with galvanic insulation for position or torque re-transmission.

Three additional SPST output contacts to be configured "make or break".

2 interlock inputs.

Position Analogue Retransmission Module ( APTM)This card gives a 4-20 mA galvanically insulated module for position or torque retransmission.

It is easily plugged in on the base card with no need for dedicated tools.

Solid state power switch over temperature(only for heavy modulation duty version)

It detects power card maximum temperature condition and sets the relevant alarm.

Extended temperature ranges-40/+70 °C by use of extended range components

-55/+70 °C by use of a heating source for internal electronic components, powered by

external supply.

Partial stroke test (PST)Through a specific procedure a partial stroke test function can be carried out to check the

functionality of the essential parts to achieve the EFS safety function while the valve/actuator is in

line and in service.

Anticondensate heaterThe internal modules provide enough power to grant anticondensation protection for general

applications. But when the environment air humidity reaches critical levels, an additional heater

(10 Watt - 1500 Ohm, with external power supply) may be supplied on request.

BatteryAuxiliary batteries can be provided in an intrinsically safe enclosure.

With auxiliary batteries it is possible to remotely transmit position

also in case of power failure.
