18EGHS Parent Newsletter 1st Quarter - August 2018

August 2019 Dear Parent(s)/ Guardian(s), It is with great pride that we invite you to our Open House at Elk Grove High School on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. to 9:00p.m. This is one of the most important and beneficial evenings of the school year, and we urge all Elk Grove families to take advantage in meeting the people who care about your students, as we all help in preparing them to become successful adults. During the evening, you will have an opportunity to be part of our Community Resource Fair, Title 1 Parent Meeting, and follow an abbreviated version of your student’s schedule. Prior to the start of visiting classes, we will hold our Title I Parent Meeting from 6:00 – 6:45 p.m. in room 120. This meeting is completely optional, and it will include an overview of the Title I Grant as well as an opportunity for our families to be involved in decisions regarding use of district and school/parent involvement set-aside funds for Parent Involvement Activities. During class presentations, teachers will provide you with an overview of each course, including course objectives and the resources used in class. Grading information, important projects/assignments, work expectations, supplies needed, and teacher contact information will also be shared. In addition to visiting with each of your child’s teachers, you will be able to attend special presentations targeted for parents of each class. The presentations will include information you need to know as a parent of a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior student. These presentations will be repeated each lunch hour – periods 4, 5, and 6. An Open House schedule, which includes the locations of the class presentations, is included with this mailing. Please plan to attend the appropriate presentation during your child’s lunch hour. Class periods are ten minutes in length with a five-minute passing period. In advance of this evening, please work with your student to fill out the accompanying schedule, as this information will guide you from class to class or find the student’s schedule on the parent portal in Infinite Campus. At any time during the evening you may see your child’s counselor and/or visit one of the tables in the main hallway set up for our Parent Teacher Council and Grenadier Athletic Boosters. If you were interested in joining either of these organizations, we would ask that you bring a check for $20.00 for PTC and/or $25.00 for the Gren Athletic Boosters. Please note that our Open House format is not the appropriate setting for individual conferences regarding student progress. Parents who desire a personal conference with a teacher should arrange for one at a later date. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, August 29th. We at Elk Grove High School consider your student’s success our own, and Open House is an excellent opportunity to partner together as the new school year begins. Best Regards,

Paul Kelly Arturo Senteno Kyle Burritt Principal Associate Principal Associate Principal

Nuestros mejores deseos,

All District 214 facilities practice Integrated Pest Management to minimize the use of any pesticides on school grounds. The Structural Pest Control Act (225 ILCS 235/) and the Lawn Care Products Application and Notice Act (415 ILCS 65/) requires public schools to notify parents/guardians and school employees at least 48 hours (two business days) prior to any pesticide applications on school grounds. The term “pesticide” includes insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides and fungicides. The notification requirement extends to both indoor and outdoor pesticide applications. Excluded from the notification requirement are antimicrobials such as disinfectants, sanitizers or deodorizers, insecticide baits and rodenticide baits.

Pesticide application notification can be included in newsletters, bulletins, calendars and/or other correspondence currently published by each school and the District. All District 214 facilities have established a registry of individuals who wish to be specifically notified of pesticide applications on school grounds. To be included in this registry, please contact your student’s individual school or program for more information.

For Edin Hodzic, Jovany Melchor and Bob Voss, summer employment marks an important step to their future, thanks to High School District 214’s new Youth Apprenticeship program.

The program, which was honored this past summer by District Administration magazine

“for leading the way with new ideas that work,” was developed to provide concrete job skills and training to students who know what careers they want to pursue by their junior year of high school.

“Youth apprenticeships bring relevancy and immediacy to the high school experience,” said Dr. Lazaro Lopez, District 214’s associate superintendent for teaching and learning.

“Students explore career opportunities while gaining valuable work experience, earning wages and valuable credentials without taking on student debt.”

Current District 214 juniors who are interested in the apprenticeship program should apply by Tuesday, October 15 by visiting www.discover214.org/apprenticeships. The District is currently running apprenticeships in cybersecurity, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and automotive services, and has plans to expand to health science and manufacturing.

In District 214, apprentices are selected for the program in their junior year of high school. They get 20 to 30 hours a month of paid job training during the school year in addition

For Hodzic, Melchor and Voss, working on the federally registered cybersecurity apprenticeship is giving them valuable experience in a variety of areas. All three plan to go to college and pursue careers in cybersecurity or other IT-related fields.

“I love it,” Hodzic said of the experience. “It gives us hands-on experience. We can really see what these industry professionals are doing. I really value the overall experience we gain here.”

to college coursework and mentoring. During the summer, they work up to 28 hours a week to expand their skills. At the end of the program, students receive either a federally registered apprenticeship certification or a youth apprenticeship certification in addition to up to a year of college credits.

During the pilot year of its Youth Apprenticeship program, the district used its own facilities for job placements. This upcoming school year, the District plans to increase the program by placing apprentices with local employers.
