The idFirst & basic part of Personality

made up of

Drive for destruction, self-destruction, dominance

Life instinct, creativity, sex drive

UNIVERSAL – everybody has the

same id drive!!! Everybody has

Thanatos, everybody has Eros, no matter where and how you were born – we all

have the same “instincts” – the

same id!

THANATOS

EROS

•Driven by the Pleasure Principle

•Only concerned with gratification

•Does not consider anything else (eg social setting, appropriateness, availability etc)

Page 2: Ego mediator

The SUPEREGO

•Your value system•Your moral and ethical code•Your idea of what is right and what is wrong•Your idea of what is socially acceptable and what is not•Your idea of what is appropriate for situations and what is not.

•Is the Superego universal like the id? Why?

Your Inner-judgeInternal father-figureYour conscience

It’s the part inside of you that makes you feel guilty when you have done something that conflicts with your value, moral or ethical system. It’s the part inside of you that gives your motivation to strive for the best, to accomplish commendable thingsIt’s the part inside of you that makes you feel proud of yourself when you have achieved something you set out to accomplish

He embarrassed you – Kill him, hurt him, destroy him, make him pay -

You cant kill him, you must not hurt him, you must forgive him, you should try to be nice to him. God wants you to turn the other cheek.

THE EGOThe Negotiator

The PeacemakerFinds a solution to make

the Id and the Superego satisfied

Operates according to the

REALITY PRINCIPLE

Page 6: Ego mediator

REALITY PRINCIPLE•Awareness and adjustment to environmental circumstances•What is realistically possible?•What is socially acceptable?•What is appropriate?•What are the costs and benefits?•What are the risks, requirements and outcomes?

Page 7: Ego mediator

I WANT SEX, I WANT IT NOW NOW – I’m going to grab somebody and do it right here on the table!

That is inappropriate, you should feel guilty for having “immoral intentions”, God says that is a sin. You must NEVER carry out that impulse publically!!!

Page 8: Ego mediator

You will be ridiculed for public indecency. It is not socially acceptable to just start having sex whenever you feel like it, wherever you are. It is not appropriate conduct nor is it an appropriate situation

The ID really wants it

The Superego demands that you don’t carry out behaviour that is morally and sociallyinappropriate!

Find a happy solution or compromise that will make the id, the superego and reality satisfied!

SUBLIMATION

“Sublimation is a defense mechanism that allows us to act out unacceptable impulses by converting these behaviors into a more acceptable form. For example, a person experiencing extreme anger might take up kick-boxing as a means of venting frustration. Freud believed that sublimation was a sign of maturity that allows people to function normally in socially acceptable ways.”
