The International Helicopter Safety Team IHST

Formed after the International Helicopter Safety Symposium, held in Montreal in 2005 initiated in USA

Followed the success of the Commercial Aircraft Safety Team Cast (CAST). Launched in 1998. After a decade of operation, CAST has almost achieved the goal of achieving an 80% reduction in accident rate

The European Safety Analysis Team (EHSAT)

EHSAT is the Safety Analysis team of the EHEST

Cross industry/authorities group

Objective:

Analyse European helicopter accidents in order to identify the contributing factors and to recommend interventions

[Data source: AIB reports]

Page 20: Ehest Conference 2008 - The Ehest

20

Coordinated regional EHSAT efforts

Regional Analysis Teams have been established to perform analysis of local accident data

Maximises usage resources

Relations between partners already established

Team is aware of local context

Implementations/action plans also have to be implemented on regional level

Language used for accident investigation reports

Regional Analysis Teams cover more than 90% of European civil helicopter fleet

Central EHSAT

Analyses are aggregated by a central EHSAT

Composed of reps. from regional EHSATs

Collects and checks results (quality control)

Discusses lessons learned

Revises the taxonomies, tool and process manual (standardisation)

Trains new regional teams

Reports to the EHEST, and coordinates with the IHST / JHSAT
