becoming Area Secretary and subsequently a Committee member on the Northern Counties AA and organised the Northern Counties Cross Country Championships held at Beverley Westwood in 1980.

On the Track Grahame became an accomplished Timekeeper, Track and Field Judge and Starter. Grahame seeded at the Brit ish Track & Field Championships and organised local meetings including the Club 24-hour event 1981-2005. Grahame was an accomplished course measurer cycling many miles within the Hull and North Lincs areas ensuring that courses were accurately measured.

The highlight of Grahame?s voluntary athletic career came when he represented athletics and met the Queen at the Guildhall, Kingston upon Hull in 1999. Her Royal Highness asked Grahame how long he had been involved in the Sport to which he answered ?I have been a member of East Hull Harriers since 1954 maam?; there was a pause, to which Grahame couldn?t resist adding ?I thought that you were going to say that I looked too young maam?! The Queen laughed much to the dismay of the then Lord Mayor.

Grahame was a good friend, we agreed on most things and had regular contact reminiscing about times past. Grahame had a wicked sense of humour and enjoyed winding people up, however, he was kind hearted, generous and would be the f irst to visit you if you were in hospital.

I could write much more but one thing I am certain of is that Grahame has been the biggest inf luence on East Hull Harriers & AC and its progress in the past 50 years and his contribution to athletics in the area was immense.

Grahame will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

God Bless and Rest in Peace

Yours in Sport

My family and I were deeply saddened by the death of Grahame Brummitt, a lasting friend and almost family member. Grahame was a loyal member of East Hull Harriers & AC for over 64 years after joining the Club in October 1954 as a raw 16 year old competing in Cross Country events.

Grahame later turned his attention to the track competing in 440 and 880 yards and on rare occasions the mile. Grahame ran 54 secs for 440, just over 2 minutes for 880 and 4.35 for a mile and regularly competed in the Yorkshire 880 championships. Grahame was the last East Riding 440 champion. Apart from running Grahame was also an accomplished Table Tennis player twice reaching the Works Table Tennis League Finals and a keen cricketer excelling as a spin bowler.

A bad achilles tendon injury in the early 1960?s halted Grahame?s running career but not deterred started to coach young athletes including Peter Moon, Les Wiles and Dennis Leveson. Grahame?s vision for a local track meeting came to fruit ion around 1964 when he organised the Hull & District Track League; known today as the Humberside Track & Field League. In those days Sunday sport was frowned upon and Grahame had to write to the House of Lords asking for permission for a Sunday meeting to take place; his request was redirected to the Lords Day Preservation Society who later approved the request.

Grahame held prestigious off ices at EHH & AC starting in the late 60?s as Club Secretary, Treasurer 1983-1991 and President 1972-1982 and 1992-1994. Grahame was inf luential in extending the Club?s opening to all year round and during his Presidency was instrumental in organising many fundraising activit ies to enable the building of a new Clubhouse which was completed in 1976. On celebrating the Club?s 100 year anniversary in 1993 Grahame researched and authored an article on its history which is stil l available on the Club?s website today.

Grahame represented the Club on the No.10 District Committee later
