K1 Laughter is the Best MedicineIRIS ZINK | BEALS INSTITUTEIn this hilarious opening keynote presentation, the back-by-popular-demand Iris Zink will discuss laughter and how it can be used by nurses and residents to help control and manage disease symptoms. This keynote presentation will discuss the physiological benefits of laughter and how to motivate residents to adopt healthy choices and lifestyle behaviors. Participating nurses will have a better understanding of what they can do to maintain their own health and avoid burnout. Iris will demonstrate that laughter truly is the best medicine!
W1 Skin Integrity: How to Select the Proper Moisturizer for Your ResidentsDR. PETER SAITTA | BEDSIDE DERMATOLOGYLong-term care facilities are now being regulated by the Center for Medical Care Services to evaluate their effectiveness in treating skin integrity. Payment will be determined on how effectively you treat the resident’s skin condition. Dr. Saitta will share with nurse participants the science of skin integrity and how to choose proper moisturizers to prevent breakdown.
W2 PR for RNs: How to Keep a Crisis Under Control While Your Administrator is AwayELIZABETH THOMAS | HEALTH CARE ASSOCIATION OF MICHIGANIt’s late at night when the phone rings and your administrator isn’t available. The TV station just pulled into the facility parking lot. What do you do? What do you say? This informative session will deconstruct all the facets that build a proper media story, as well as help nurses know the steps they can take to properly manage media inquiries, both benign and crisis-driven.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21AGENDA-AT-A-GLANCE
W3 Strategies for Successful Nurse Recruitment & RetentionAUDRA DIXON | LEADERSTATThis presentation will provide nurse participants with information on recruiting top nursing/clinical talent to your organization, interviewing skills and suggestions for a successful hiring process, making an offer to the candidate, and key employee retention strategies on how your healthcare organization or facility can retain qualified and competent nurses who can and will deliver exceptional resident care and promote positive outcomes in your organization.
W4 Case Management = Care ManagementBRENDA SOWASH | ROLF CONSULTING LLCCase management...it's not just about the money...it’s about care management. The Affordable Care Act continues to present challenges to skilled nursing facilities in caring for their residents. Now, facilities must manage the complexities of their residents with less reimbursement and resources. Case management of facility residents, both short and long stay, will be the key to a facility's successful clinical and financial outcomes in a managed care environment.
W5 Let’s Talk About…Sexual Intimacy & Chronic Disease IRIS ZINK | BEALS INSTITUTEThis zesty, fun and dynamic lecture will examine how to best approach the subject of sexuality with your residents and care teams. Nurse participants will explore how sexuality changes with age, discuss how every individual, including our residents, are a sexual person and review the 10 myths of sexuality. Nurse participants should be prepared for a lively discussion and “sex ed” like they’ve never experienced before!
W6 Tweets & Termination: Social Media in the WorkplaceNICOLE PATERSON | CLARK HILL PLCEmployee use of social media continues to frustrate
employers. This is especially true in long-term care facilities that are entrusted with protecting patient information and integrity. Recent decisions from the National Labor Relations Board, and the recent passage of states’ laws, including the Michigan’s Internet Privacy Protection Act, hinder employers from using employees’ social media posts to discipline or discharge employees who criticize employers and supervisors in social media postings. This interactive session will discuss the hurdles employers face with employees' use of social media and how to avoid violations of employee privacy and government claims that the posting is protected activity.
W7 Pharmacologic Management of Diabetes in the ElderlyTOM KATOFIASC | OMNICAREDiabetes remains a major health concern in the elderly, especially in the long-term care setting. Although there are many new medication options for treating diabetes, the frail elderly are at risk for adverse events including hypoglycemia related to anti-diabetic medications. This presentation will provide an overview of Diabetes along with treatment options ranging from oral therapy to basal bolus insulin dosing to promote better health outcomes for our nursing home residents.
W8 Coordinated Pain Management: Improving Non-Pharmacological & Pharmacological Management of PainSCOTT PAXTON | GREAT LAKES CARINGBy attending this educational activity, nurse participants will be able to describe best practices in pain management utilizing both non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches to treating pain. The purpose of this activity is to provide nurses with new approaches to pain management based on philosophical changes in the assessment and management of pain to promote resident comfort and quality of life.

W10 Using Your Senses to Screen for SepsisMICHELLE MOCCIA | ST. MARY MERCY HOSPITALThe incidence of severe sepsis and septic shock is increasing in the elderly population. A higher index of suspicion is necessary in this population since the initial clinical presentation may be ambiguous, thus missing the opportunity for timely, aggressive management of sepsis. This program will focus on the signs and symptoms of sepsis using standard criteria and showcase a variety of tools you can use in your facility to help identify and diagnose severe sepsis and septic shock in nursing home residents. Nurse participants will NOT want to miss this informative and applicable general session.
Professional Development MI-NADONA/LTC, with support from our
sponsor partners, will continue to raise money to promote the professional development of
LTC nurse professionals in Michigan. We kindly ask that all participants and vendors give back to the profession and fellow/future LTC nurse
professionals by contributing to the MI-NADONA/LTC Margaret Godfrey Scholarship Fund at this
year’s Convocation & Expo.
W9 Cosmic Heros Unite for Conflict ResolutionSTACY STARLING | STARLING CENTER FOR ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENTHENRY BOUTROS | NEXCARE HEALTH SYSTEMSIt takes two wings to soar with effective leadership, the meeting of feeling and thought. This interactive session will illuminate our blindspots of communication by examining the inner source of our actions in the midst of conflict. Next, this session will examine important leadership communication capacities to consciously access emotional resonance within conflict; ultimately serving to unite our cosmic heroes to forward positive action and successful outcomes. Directors of nursing and clinical leaders are strongly encouraged to attend this session to help improve their conflict resolution skills.

F1 ‘Tis the Season: A Clinical & Regulatory Overview of Influenza in Long Term CareWILLIAM VAUGHAN | REMEDI SENIORCAREROB SHULMAN | REMEDI SENIORCAREAccording to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), it's estimated that "90% of seasonal flu-related deaths and between 50-60% of seasonal flu-related hospitalizations in the United States occur in people 65 years and older." Nursing home and assisted living providers care for some of the most compromised elderly in our society and therefore must make the prevention, treatment and control of influenza an organizational priority. This presentation, provided by a board certified geriatric pharmacist and a former nurse surveyor, will review current standards of practice regarding influenza from both a clinical and regulatory perspective. Management of the disease via immunization, antiviral prophylaxis and in-house versus hospital base treatment will be highlighted. Nurses will NOT want to miss this session as we move forward into “flu season.”

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23AGENDA-AT-A-GLANCE
It was 1962 that Motown's Artist and Repertoire Director William “Mickey” Stevenson first heard the voice that would become synonymous with "the sound of young America." A young jazz/blues singer with the unlikely name of "Martha Lavaille" was bringing audiences to their feet at Detroit's famed 20 Grand Nightclub singing songs made popular by singers the likes of Gloria Lynne and Della Reese. He invited her to audition at the new Motown Records headquarters, "Hitsville, USA."
Though the audition never happened, within a year, Martha had taken the reigns of the company's A&R department, ingratiating herself. She saw that musicians showed up on time and got paid. She watched, learned, and whenever opportunity presented itself, she sang. And when she did, everyone took notice. When Mary Wells couldn't make a session, Martha was called to the mic. With her group, the Del Phi's, she recorded "I'll Have to Let Him Go," and Martha and the Vandellas was born.
The song was rather forgettable, but Reeves' sound wasn't. While waiting for her first hit, Martha (along with Rosalind Ashford and Annette Beard) backed Marvin Gaye on his first three releases and sang with him on stage. Soon, however, they emerged from the shadows with "Come and Get These Memories," followed by an enviable string of hits: "Heat Wave," "Jimmy Mack," and, of course, the Motown anthem, "Dancing In The Street."
Martha Reeves continues to thrill audiences around the world. Her self-produced 2004 CD, "Home to You" was named one of the year's best by the Asbury Park Press. In 2005, Will Smith mined the Motown vaults to uncover her unreleased gem, "It's Easy to Fall In Love," and included it in the hit movie "Hitch." Also in 2005, Motown released Martha's "Lost and Found" collection, which included the rare Smokey Robinson-penned "Spellbound," her studio recording of "For Once In My Life," and covers of hits by the likes of Aretha Franklin, the Marvelettes, Vikki Carr, Sam & Dave, and the Four Tops. She was also featured in the PBS special, "Motown: The Early Years," writing liner notes for the four-set CD package. A "Gold" collection was released in March 2006 and "The Definitive Collection" in 2009. (Her 1968 "Live at the Copa" remains in the vaults, but we hope for a release in the not-too-distant future.
Martha just completed a four-year run as a member of the Detroit City Council. She is back on the road full time, making sure that no one ever forgets the Motor City!
