This issue of Home News opens with a
showcase of back-to-basics, non-electric
gadgets for greener ways to prepare food.
Find out how you can hand-crank ingredients
for a good meal with these highly functional
yet easy to use tools.
Speaking of shopping, have you checked
out the amenities in your neighbourhood
yet? There are a good number of village-
style malls that have come up across
Singapore recently, and there could be
one, if not more, in close proximity to where
you’re now living. Turn to page 7 for our
feature on selected Far East village malls,
and explore some of the interesting retail
stores and F&B outlets.
We then turn the spotlight from cosmopolitan
village malls to townhouses. This article
provides a brief account of the legacy of
prestige behind the term ‘townhouse’ and
gives an overview of our various integrated
housing developments with modern, well-
designed townhouses set within a gated,
landscaped compound. Home buyers
looking for spacious and exclusive landed
homes with full condominium facilities would
get a good idea of the choices available.
For those who prefer stylish, SOHO-style
abodes, there’s also a feature on Bijou –
where you can read up on this freehold,
low-rise mixed-use development in Pasir
Panjang – highlighting units with voluminous
living spaces and high ceilings.
Finally, do remember to turn to the second
half of the magazine for the construction
status of your new property. Details
provided are based on the latest information
available at press time.
Happy reading!

CHEMEX COFFEE MAKER The Chemex hand-blown glass coffee brewer is the
perfect example of why electricity isn’t needed to
make great coffee. Essentially an hourglass vessel,
it has a funnel on top to hold the filter and the coffee
grind, and a bottom canister to collect the aromatic
drips. Gently pour hot water over the grind and let
gravity take care of the rest. Within a few minutes
you can enjoy an evenly flavoured, freshly brewed
pot of low sediment coffee.
The Handblown series is so effective yet simple in
construct that it is kept in permanent collection at
the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, and
the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the US.

Back to basics with non-electric toolsWhen it comes to household appliances, the kitchen
dominates. The problem is many of such hi-tech equipment are seldom used to their full potential –
and frequency. So before you get tempted to stock up on yet another underutilised appliance, why not
try non-electric alternatives? We’ve picked out some beautifully crafted appliances for ideas.

MARCATO ATLAS PASTA MACHINE* If you make pasta from scratch, you’ll appreciate
having a good tool to cut up the dough, like the
hand-crank Atlas 150 Color from Marcato’s Design
line, a beautifully constructed product that is also
easy to use. Just secure it onto the side of the table
with a specially designed clamp, and then insert
the crank handle into the hole with smooth rollers –
and you’re all set.

PROGRESSIVE CHOPPER* This hand-pulled Herb and Veggi Chopper comes

fresh ingredients – from walnuts and carrot chunks
to tomato slices and mint leaves.
The blades will start spinning and slicing when you
yank on the rotation cord, and before you know it,
the chopping’s done. Instant salsa, anyone?

CUISIPRO ICE CREAM MAKER* Make delicious ice cream in the comfort of your own kitchen with
Cuisipro’s Donvier Ice Cream Maker. Simply freeze the Chillfast
cylinder overnight, add in your favourite ingredients, and turn the
handle occasionally to slowly freeze liquid into slush. Instructions
on the website say that it makes up to a litre of ice cream in
less than 20 minutes, but independent online reviews suggest
freezing and churning at least once more to get consistency
closer to store-bought ice cream.
This contraption also makes frozen yogurt, fruit sorbets and
non-dairy soy desserts.

For a small serving of freshly made chilli paste, it can be a
hassle to bring out the big guns like an electric food processor
or a wet grinder. That’s why it’s good to have a trusty pestle and
mortar in the kitchen (the grey granite kind).
There are two basic actions to using the pestle and mortar –
pounding and grinding – and these are the motor skills you
would need to make your favourite sambal.
Throw in the ingredients a little at a time, and then pound them
all into a paste. You need to scoop out each small batch before
starting anew, so the process does take a while. Your effort
will be rewarded by the wafting fragrance of rehydrated chilli
peppers, freshly peeled shallots, dried shrimp paste and other
aromatics being amalgamated as you work, an experience that
no amount of electric processing can ever replicate.
The pestle and mortar is also ideal for quick cracking or grinding
of seeds and spices.
Pestle & Mortar
• Patented Chillfast cylinder
• Double-walled freezer cylinder holder for extra insulation
• Size: 30 x 27 x 20 cm
• Available in green, white and pink
* All hand-crank products and parts are susceptible to breakage, especially if you try to process too much at a time. So exercise moderation when working with ingredients, and they should serve you well for many years. 5

Wood or plastic? The chopping board debate
goes on inconclusively – though the general
opinion favours wood. If you’re sceptical of both,
Cuttingboard.com suggests trying bamboo instead. Here’s why:
1. Bamboo is quite water resistant and so doesn’t warp or crack easily.
2. It resists knife scarring and water penetration so germs don’t get a foothold.
3. Its natural light wood tone looks good.
4. Being a type of grass, bamboo grows rapidly and is a highly renewable
resource.
Beef up your knowledge of kitchen knives
The Cleaver RulesSecond in hardness after diamonds, ceramic knives keep their sharpness for a
long time. Being relatively non-porous, they are generally odourless and easy to
clean and of course do not rust.
The downside however, is brittleness, making ceramic knives far less versatile.
While they perform well in everyday cutting and slicing – it’s a definite no to
picking at bottle caps or hacking on frozen meats.
Ever wondered why some kitchen knives have
holes in them? This is to prevent food from
sticking to the blade during the cutting action.
If you’ve ever had to slice up volumes of large
raw potatoes, you’ll know how significant this
difference is!
Cutting Edge Ceramics
It’s Got Holes!
Chopping On Bamboo
If you only have one knife in your kitchen, make it the medium weight Chinese cleaver, a staple across Asian kitchens for centuries.
In her book Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper: A Sweet-Sour Memoir of Eating in China, chef and food-writer, Fuchsia Dunlop wrote:
“The everyday cleaver, the cai dao (菜刀)
or vegetable knife, is unexpectedly light and dexterous, as suitable
for slicing a small shallot as a great hunk of meat, and used by
everyone.”
Dunlop’s observation seems to be shared by a growing number of cleaver fans in the West – so much so that Victorinox – of Swiss Army Knife fame – manufactures its own “Chinese chef’s knife”, and gives it the same international assurance of quality as other Swiss Army products.

Singapore has seen a recent proliferation of modern yet modestly-sized malls. These may only have a few storeys of shops, but what they lack in quantity is made up for with quality. Their retail and F&B mixes are catered specifically for the neighbourhoods in their vicinity to meet their target shoppers’ needs.
For ideas on your next shopping excursion, check out the selected picks in our Mall Gallery.

CHARMS OF THE
MODERN TOWNHOUSE
F E AT U R E
Back in the day, a “townhouse” is what a British aristocrat would call his or her in-city residential property – simply to differentiate it from the “country house”, which is located out in the countryside. The term however, doesn’t actually specify a building form; instead, it is used to connote the prestige of a property’s ownership. If the house is located in an exclusive upper class enclave, and the land that it sits on also belongs to the same nobleman – that domicile would be called a townhouse.
Today, townhouses have taken on a much broader definition, describing terrace or semi-detached houses that are, in keeping with the legacy of prestige, architecturally designed to impress. In Singapore, these modern landed homes can be found in integrated private estates, where they
share landscaped grounds and luxurious condominium facilities with other residential types.
FAR EAST TOWNHOUSESFar East Organization offers a selection of double- or multi-storey townhouses in its larger residential developments, as part of an integrated residential mix. This provides well-heeled homeowners the choice of landed living in a gated compound with full condominium facilities – in elegant homes that have voluminous living spaces, bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, private terraces and basement parking lots. However, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) no longer allows strata landed homes to be built in projects with ‘condominium’ status w.e.f April 2012, hence the limited supply and availability of such townhouses.
Today’s exquisitely designed townhouses are elegant abodes that continue to bear a legacy of prestige.

A joint project by Far East Organization, Frasers Centrepoint Limited and Sekisui House, eCO is an ecology-themed integrated development set in a woodland gardenscape. It has many eco-friendly features, including a 100-metre long boardwalk that is both a natural trail and an eco-platform. Within this scenic estate are various housing types: suites, lofts, SOHO-style apartments and condominium units – as well as 34 townhouses located at the highest and most tranquil spot. These four-storey, 4-bedroom homes come with roof pavilions and terraces, providing spacious landed living close to nature.
By 2015, the nearby Bedok Town Centre will host a new town plaza, hawker centre, multi-storey car park and a heritage park. In addition to the fully air-conditioned Bedok Bus Interchange, directly linked to Bedok MRT station, the future Bedok South and Sungei Bedok MRT Stations along Thomson-East Coast Line will be operational by 2024.
euHabitat, jointly developed by Far East Organization and Far East Orchard Limited, is a 444,000 sq ft integrated residential development with four housing styles, each landscaped in a separate garden enclave endowed with dedicated social and recreational spaces. There is also an array of leisure facilities across the tropical garden grounds.
Laid out with private decks that allow homeowners direct access to swimming pools are the development’s 51 townhouses – two-storey, 4-bedroom landed homes with basements and private, enclosed roof terraces.
euHabitat is in an area primed for rejuvenation, and is set to benefit from the transformation of Paya Lebar Central into a commercial hub, comprising office/retail/hospitality developments and landscaped public spaces. The nearby Geylang River will also be enhanced with new recreational and communal facilities.
The 13km eastern stretch of the 2024 Thomson-East Coast Line will also run through nearby neighbourhoods to provide more commuting options.

Jointly developed by Far East Organization, Sekisui House and China Construction, Hillsta is a residential development infused with traditional Japanese accents. Integrated with condominium and SOHO-style units, it also features 20 double-storey townhouses with four bedrooms, a basement car park and a roof garden.
The site’s naturally undulating terrain is perfectly suited for Sekisui House to recreate an interpretation of satoyama – a Japanese concept of synergy between nature and people living at foothills. Examples of this landscape are tanada (rice terrace) inspired platform lawns, and a cascading water feature cum swimming pool that meanders like a river throughout the premises.
Hillsta is located at Choa Chu Kang-Bukit Panjang district, which is only a 5-minute walk to Phoenix LRT station, and 10 minutes away from the upcoming Bukit Panjang MRT station; with lifestyle malls like Junction 10 and HillV2 within easy reach.
Poised between the shoreline of West Coast Park and the lush greenery of Clementi Woods Park is SeaHill, launched in 2012 as the first multi-component residential and hospitality development in West Coast. There is a mix of housing choices available in its landscaped grounds, as well as Oasia West, a full service residence managed by Far East Hospitality.
Integrated in the housing mix are 18 units of four-storey, 4-bedroom townhouses, which come with high ceilings, a roof terrace, basement, private lift and car park; and a dual frontage that opens up to pool and garden views. Besides the full range of condominium facilities, residents can also use the concierge and business services of Oasia West for a fee.
The development is well located near the thriving West Coast corridor for Singapore’s education, R&D and innovation hubs. It is linked by major highways to the CBD and other parts of the island, and is near the Haw Par Villa MRT station and lifestyle hotspots like VivoCity and West Coast Plaza.

The Seawind is the first freehold property from Far East Organization to feature a combination of SOHO apartments, condominium units and townhouses – with each residential type clustered by waterscapes and pockets of greenery.
There are 23 two-storey, 4-bedroom townhouses with basement, enveloped within a forestscape that has a winding path lined with recreational facilities, all the way to a central water body. This thoughtful layout provides little enclaves for residents to enjoy different activities, be it get-togethers or relaxing time-outs.
Located close to the East Coast area, the development is only a short distance from the bustling Marine Parade Central, Parkway Parade mall and East Coast, and along the upcoming Thomson-East Coast Line, that will link commuters from the east to the city and the northern parts of Singapore by 2024. Until then, there are many expressways in the vicinity, and also Kembangan MRT and Paya Lebar MRT Interchange stations – allowing for easy access to Changi Airport, the CBD and around the island.
Designed with a strong community identity, Woodhaven integrates elegant townhouses with luxurious condominium apartments and SOHO-style units – all nestled amongst recreational facilities in an idyllic resort landscape.
The 39 townhouses have high ceilings, spacious bedrooms and private car park lots, and also come with an enclosed deck, roof terrace and Jacuzzi, bringing a right balance of exclusivity and accessibility.
Woodhaven is only a 10 minutes’ walk to the Woodlands Regional Centre, Woodlands Regional Library, Woodlands Stadium and Causeway Point. The upcoming Woodlands General Hospital will also serve the healthcare needs of residents, when completed in 2020.
Over the next 10 to 15 years, Woodlands will be transformed into one of Singapore’s four regional centres, the only one bearing a coastal waterfront that faces the Straits

COASTAL LIVING ALONG MARINE PARADE ROAD
One of the most luxurious new developments in the East Coast area, Silversea has four architecturally distinctive residential towers, featuring striking facades reminiscent of strong, unfurled sails, and laid out for most units to have views of either the breathtaking sea horizon or the lush garden and pool terrace landscape.
In this section, we offer a glimpse of selected Far East homes that have been completed in recent months, with a showcase on Silversea.
Within its resort-style setting is an array of spa and relaxation facilities, like the Balinese Spa and Japanese Onsen Villas, and the beautiful sky promenades on the 11th floors of the towers – offering open, breezy spaces with expansive views of the sea, set amidst three sets of facilities for chill out get-togethers.
