EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The Letter to the Ephesians speaks of “learning Christ,”
inviting us to open our hearts and minds to learn not
only the truth about Jesus as One sent by the Father to
bring new life, but to learn the truth that is Jesus who
says to us: “I am the way, the truth, and the Life” (John
14:6). By accepting this invitation to continue our
education into what it means to live into the mystery of
Christ, we will be made new “in the spirit of [our] minds”
and be enabled to “put on the new self” (Ephesians
4:23, 24). And so God nourishes us into new life. This
is the same God who fed Israel in the dessert with
manna (the word means “Who is this?”). Whatever it
was, it came faithfully until Israel entered the Promised
Land. Through God’s fidelity, Israel learned to trust
God—sometimes. For us, Jesus is the true bread come
down from Heaven. As the Wisdom of God, God’s
Word of life, Jesus is the food that nourishes our minds
and hearts, enduring for eternal life.
How has this food deepened your trust in God?

The Catholic Church has taught for centuries that our prayers are of assistance to those who have died. We commend their soul to God’s mercy and pray for them. We can help them not only by our prayers, but also by offering a Mass in their name, by giving alms, by indulgences or other works of penance done for their benefit (CCC 1032).

TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD…...August 6th
At his Transfiguration Christ showed his disciples the splendor of his beauty, to which he will shape and color those who are his: ‘He will reform our lowness configured to the body of his glory’” (Philippians 3:21) (St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae).
Jesus took Peter, John, and
James and went up a
mountain to pray.
While he was praying his face
changed in appearance
and his clothing became
dazzling white.
And behold, two men were conversing with him,
Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of
his exodus that he was going to accomplish in
Jerusalem.
Peter and his companions had been overcome
by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory
and the two men standing with him.
As they were about to part from him, Peter said
to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; let us
make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one
for Elijah.”
But he did not know what he was saying.
While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud.
Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen.
