KING STREET PILOT - NEW PUBLIC SPACES Poetry needs to be read more than once. Read a litt le today, then a litt le more tomorrow. Read it all at once. Or savour only some of the words today, and another tomorrow. Read snippets while you are walking, while you are cycling, while you are on the streetcar, fl eeti ngly. ASPHALT POETRY is both a ground mural and a performance collaborati on. The poem The City (by Ronna Bloom) is presented on the ground – able to be read from the North and the South, at diff erent speeds, words intermingling.

The City

A network of roads spreads fi nelythrough fi elds, between tower blocksand building sites, it spinsthrough highways and downtownsand downtowns. Dangerous neighbourhoodsawait arteries. Mapsthe city Toronto to the city Dublin to the city London. All converge.Circle road, Ring road.

I am going out all the exits on the highwayat the same ti me. Mappinga leg to a shoulder, a memory to a hill, a blue veinto an arm. Crosssecti ons of past. Yonge Street meetsKing north of Piccadilly Circuslike a skin graft . Major intersecti onscross the body.

I don’t know where I’m going and the citycalls to my voices, my limbs, all my uncertain directi ons, saying:Lie down in the not knowing.Lie down in me.

Get pedaling and light the Spark! This installati on harnesses pedal power to illuminate the space. Through the power of their hands or feet, users will work together to bring the installati on to life — creati ng a shared experience that can last as long as the users want. Only when all four bikes are in use will the full eff ect be revealed. The Spark facilitates random interacti ons between strangers, a shared moment of fun and refl ecti on amid the busy pace of the city. This project hopes to inspire discussion about how our city is powered and how we can increase our producti on of clean energy. The Spark enhances the use of public space, even once the sun sets.

KING STREET PILOT - NEW PUBLIC SPACES The Present Moment is an invitati on to pause in the midst of a bustling city. Beginning with an eye-catching road mural that draws att enti on away from inner thoughts and outer chaos, this installati on invites those passing by to stop and relax in a country chair… observing the lively street and refl ecti ng on the beauty and tranquility that can be found wherever we seek them, should we only pause for long enough to look.

Public Space 11Hello Kirsten

THE PRESENT MOMENT

Site 12 - Road Mural with painted double Adirondack chairs

Placement on Street Road Mural alone

Road Mural with planters (purple) and chairs (red)

Context Plan

The road mural will occupy the entirety of the street, measuring 62.5 x 2.01 m, and will be installed over 4 consecutive days, beginning on April 15, 2018.

It will be painted with exterior latex paint, which will last for the duration of the 8 month project. The planters will remain in place.

The Adirondack chairs each measure 1.7 x 1.1 m

The 6 chairs will will be painted in-studio prior to April 15, and will be assembled on-site on April 18, 2018, after the road mural is complete.

Due to their size, theft is unlikely, so they will not be secured to the site.

A photographer will document the project on April 19, 2018.

I will install the road mural with the help of a trained assistant.

We will begin by cleaning the road with a power washer, and then priming it with an asphalt primer. We will apply base coats with high-pile rollers, and I will hand-paint detailed areas with a brush.

The installation of the road mural and assembly of the chairs will take 4 days.

Tracing a line in space and presenti ng opportuniti es for open-ended explorati on, ‘Ziggy’ is an invitati on to linger on King Street. Simple and playful, this painted tubular steel frame is a ‘social infrastructure’ – a piece of urban furniture that provides potenti al shared moments. As an analog prompt in a digital age, this structure hopes to connect and bring people together.

Facing the street, the crown-like conti nuous zigzag provides a clear identi ty for 'Ziggy' with V-supports that open up to allow access on the sidewalk-side. The two sides are ti ed together by a series of occupiable bars at diff erent heights, allowing people of diff erent shapes and sizes to fi nd their ideal place to lean on and hang out. The simplicity of 'Ziggy' is enhanced by the strong colour that ti es it together and helps to claim the space while being light-hearted. As a sculptural armature ‘Ziggy’ is an open-thick boundary, a zone of possibiliti es that invites explorati on and occupati on.

Set within the heart of Toronto’s downtown core, the Woggle Jungle is a squishy mini-park amongst a forest of glass towers. Hundreds of colourful foam noodles are clustered together to create a cheerful and immersive environment that encourages play and relaxati on in our city’s busiest district. Seati ng benches made from foam noodles are scatt ered throughout to create opportuniti es for rest and social interacti on for adults and children alike.

The Woggle Jungle is designed by VPA-Studio and built as a collaborati on between VPA-Studio and Make Studio, a Toronto based custom design and fabricati on studio.

WATCH YOUR STEP! is an abstract geometric road mural composed of brightly coloured triangles that appear to fold in and out of the road’s surface. The ti led format of the design takes its cue from concrete pavers – a ubiquitous and oft en unremarkable material. Here, the use of colour visually transforms an ordinary two-dimensional surface into a three-dimensional one by creati ng a sense of movement and visual depth.

The King \ St exhibits the city's fi rst modular urban green park, showcasing a unique material made from recycled automoti ve texti le waste and enabling real grass to grow. Pockets of occupiable spaces are created from individual lett ers that collecti vely spell out “KING ST”. These lett ers are highlighted in bold yellow, creati ng a vibrant place-making sign when viewed from above. At ground level, the lett ers act as "rooms" with seati ng and benches of various heights as well as places to relax on the newly formed grass. Users can also charge their phones using Canada’s fi rst smart bench while enjoying the space. The benches have a Photovoltaic (PV) panel on the top so that it is fully self-suffi cient and does not require power. With its high water retenti on, load bearing capacity, and thermal and acousti c insulati ng properti es, this recycled growing material (STERED) has great potenti al for urban environments.

KING STREET PILOT - NEW PUBLIC SPACES

98Credit: Brens North America and O2 Planning + Design

During the formati ve days of Toronto, multi ple creeks traversed the land along King St from Bathurst to Jarvis. Cathedral Creek owed through St. James Park beneath the site of The Cathedral Church of St. James, from Jarvis and King to Church and Adelaide. At least 8 more creeks crossed King Street. They are now buried or dried up. This road mural depicts a stream, edged with rocks, pebbles, mud and brush; resurrecti ng the lost creeks of King St. It will be painted in blues, greens, browns, greys, white and reds. The mural meanders along the public space, adding colour, beauti fying the street and providing an infusion of nature in the heart of downtown. Animal footprints will be painted onto the road using a super hydrophobic soluti on. This animated feature will be invisible in dry weather and visible when it rains. Horse, deer, moose, rabbit, fox, beaver, racoon, squirrel and bird tracks will surround the stream when wet. As the sun shines and dries the sidewalk, their existence will fade from sight, just as the creatures did. The ghostly images will encourage passersby to return during wet weather. The audience can test their knowledge in identi fying the animal tracks.

Design Build Competition

EVERYONE IS KING: STREAM 2 - DURABLE DESTINATION PARKLETS (DP)

The King Street Causeway is a durable desti nati on parklet which celebrates the pedestrian experience along King Street. Comprised of interlocking hexagonal modules at varying heights, these formati ons accommodate a diverse program for both individuals and groups. During the day, it is a place for pedestrians to sit and relax while taking in the bustle of the city. By sundown, it becomes a beacon in the Entertainment District, catering to Toronto’s vibrant nightlife. The illuminated crystals have a dichroic quality, refl ecti ng and transmitti ng an infi nite colour spectrum. No two views are the same, creati ng a dynamic user experience while animati ng Toronto’s urban streetscape.

KING STREET PILOT - NEW PUBLIC SPACES

Face to Face/Tête à Tête creates a place for shared conversati on along the street. With two unexpectedly long tables, fl anked by conti nuous benches and wrapped with planti ng, this is a place for concentrated community conversati on – animated inside the words Face to Face/Tête à Tête dynamically projected over all of the street furniture surfaces. The narrow striking blue and orange space promotes both inti macy within the bustle of King St, and deliberately intensifi es the conversati on. Shaped like boomerangs, one table angles toward the street, and one toward the sidewalk, subtly inviti ng parti cipants to the table angled to watch the passers-by on the sidewalk, or to hail to those on bike and streetcar. The table is a central focus recalling big family dinners –promoti ng larger collecti ve/community gathering, yet the narrowness allows for individual occupati on, co-working, musing, lunching, and dreaming.
