New to Eikö

KAI NOLANWe took the time to catch up with someone making their first appearance on Eikö and find out how the experience is from the side of a fighter:

Hi Kai, lets hear a littel about yourself:

Hi, my name’s Kai Nolan and I train at ‘Tap out Knock out’ MMA fight academy in Egremont Cumbria

How long have you done MMA?

I have trained MMA for about 12month , I did a bit of boxing before that but my main strength was on the ground. So, I got asked if would like to go threw to Workington which was the nearest club at the time to try mixed martial arts. From that day on I was hooked to it, I loved it so it basically went from there.

What kind of fighter do you want to be?

I’m not to fussed about what kind of fighter I could be to be honest, as long as I’m winning fights I’m happy. Having said that, I rather like Chuck Liddels style, he’s someone I watch a lot of and learn things off, so is Jose Aldo.

As some one new to Eikö, how did you find the show?

I liked the Eikö show, it went well. I was a bit annoyed that there was no one recording it this time because there’s people back at home who couldn’t make it and were looking forward to watching me. I also like to watch the DVDs of myself that you usually later put out, I think it’s a good way to see what mistakes you made and were you made

Yes we were gutted too, we were let down by the film crew booked. We have learned from this and arranged a top team to cover our next show. So, you picked up a wind in your Eikö debut, but this was not your first fight?

Yeah I was thrilled with the win, but I actually recently made my debut at another local show. However I ended up not wanting to fight there any more because they tried setting me up with a fighter who was in a weight class above mine. They new fine well what weight I was and what I thought at - so yeah I was let down there.

Ah, this kind of experience can put people off combative sports but you weren’t fazed?

Well, I have been told by some well recognised names in the mma game that I have a very bright future ahead of me,and that I have huge potential,so that keeps very happy.

It helps to have positive people around you when trying to stay focused. Speaking of which, what are you focused on, what’s your goal?

I’ve always wanted a shot at a title so that’s basically what I’m aiming for. So the quicker Eikö gets some belts the better haha!

Aha! Yes titles will emerge 2013, no announcements on what weights they will be yet, but stay tuned...

FIGHTING BROTHERS

Anthony Hollis made his semi-professional debut at Eikö3. We caught up with him after the show to see how he felt it all went. Hi Anthony, lets get straight into it shall we? Tell us a little about yourself and how you got into MMA?

I have always trained MMA from day 1, but competed on the local Kickboxing circuit prior to stepping into the cage, winning several tournaments. Started off competing just out of curiosity to see how my skills matched up against everyone else’s, and grew to love it.

So where do you train?Attitude Martial Arts Academy, North Shields

Being only 19, you have a infinite possibilities ahead of you, what else do you do other than Martial Arts? Most of my time outside of the sport gets spent in education, I’m studying an engineering course at Newcastle University, so that coupled with MMA training doesn’t leave time for much else!

At Eikö3 you made your Semi-Professional debut, tell us a bit about that, how did you feel? I felt incredibly excited coming into my semi-pro debut fight, it definitely adds a new element to the sport that you compete in, knowing that the competition will get stiffer and the rules allow full head contact. I was surprised at how relaxed I felt going into the fight, all the nerves go away by fight time and get replaced with focus.

Despite the outcome, I thought the fight went well. I landed a left hook in the first round that cut him, so my confidence in the striking grew from there. My opponent definitely had the strength advantage and used it well in tying me up in the clinch and avoiding takedowns. Congratulations to Richard, it was definitely a close fight and a great experience to get me ready for the next one!

Tonight was a double special occasion for you with your brother making his debut in competing in his first Amateur MMA bout, how was that? The event was definitely made more special by my brother making his amateur debut on the same night. I can definitely say that I was more nervous for my brother’s fight than mine. Before the show I was worried that I may have worked myself up too much for his fight and then been exhausted for my own, but in fact all my nerves went away when his was over, which allowed me to become more focussed on mine.

It was another performance and we look forward to seeing you again at our next show. Thanks for the opportunity, can’t wait for the next one.

In the main event Roberts Skujins stepped up on short notice to replace Jordan Miller to take on Ryan Roddy. Roddy stalked Skujins early on, and although Skujins landed a heavy shot, Roddy quickly and calmly took the fight to the floor, where he smoothly advanced his position to take Skujins back. Roddy defeated Roberts Skujins 2 minutes 28 seconds into round 1 via rear naked choke.

I’d just like to say I really enjoyed fighting on the promotion, the set up was really professional and it was fun to fight in Newcastle again! Eikö has been a great springboard for me on to fight in Cage Warriors and hopefully other guys from the local area can get similar opportunities via fighting on Eikö! My next fight is on Cage Warriors on NYE, I’m massively excited to get in and throw some hands with a tough Irishman in Paul redmond. Fighting on home soil for the first time in about 4 years is fantastic, though cutting weight on Xmas week is sure to be a fairly terrible experience,it’s all par for the course really so I shouldn’t complain.

I’d like to thank my head coaches Peter Irving, Richy Knox and Emmett McNally, my manager Dave Kirkland, my kit sponsors BadBoy MMA, Combat Soap, all my training partners in the north east and Ireland, including The Faktory, Spartans, Fight pit, Sixth sense, Sudden impact and EFR. Thanks S&C coach Leon Ferao and my performance coach Fergus Wallace! Hopefully I haven’t missed anyone!
