“Eisemann Center Update”

Our holiday party will take place on 1-15-10. The event will be called The Winter Wonderland. We hear there will be snow all around for this event, so be sure to find your parkas!! Stay tuned for more info! Dr. Arnie Stokol will be leading an Urban Hike on Feb. 28th 2010 along with Jim Varnum and Roger Scott from the city of Richardson. The hike is set for 1:00pm and will feature a very cool species of plant life, amongst many other things. Spring comes early in North Central Texas. Dandelions aside, we spot one or two wildflowers by the end of January and a dozen or so by the end of February. But one February bloomer – the trout lily (Erythronium albidum) – stands out to both the botanist and casual wildflower watcher as a true harbinger of spring. What an odd name – “trout lily” – it doesn’t look like a trout! It’s also called a dog-tooth violet or fawn lily, but it doesn’t resemble those creatures either. Let’s explore this interesting and amazing plant together. Put this on your calendar! What a great way to get out and enjoy nature! Jim Shepherd has formed a committee to research the possibility of another fund raising opportunity for our club. The committee met on Nov. 2nd to discuss the possibility of a skeet shoot. Barry Krause, Chip Izard, Elizabeth Purdy Bergin, Gene Ingram and Sandy Garza met with Jim to hear more about this opportunity. They all agreed to take a "field trip" to a shooting range to find out more. Once details are ironed out, a formal presentation to the board will be made for a vote.

CLUB SERVICE – Sandy Garza

Dedication of the Toilet Block donated to the Kalyanasundaram School, Thanjavur and made possible through contributions by the Richardson Rotary Clubs. The over 100 year old school has a student body of over 5000 students who were reportedly very happy to get bathroom facilities.

INDIA PROJECT – TOILET BLOCK DEDICATION IN THANJAVUR, INDIA

Today we will elect our Club’s Board and Officers for the 2010-2011 Rotary year beginning July 1, 2010. Printed in this bulletin is the slate proposed by the nominating committee. I thank all of you for the support you have given the current Club Board, Officers and me since July and ask for your continued support during the next seven months. This is your Club and we all need to remember that “The Future Of Rotary Is In Our Hands.” Last Tuesday night a celebration to thank past Rotary Club presidents for their service to Rotary was held by our Rotary District. During the affair Dave McSpadden, District 5810 Governor, announced some exciting news regarding Rotary International’s Polio Plus project. He recounted that there are currently only four countries (Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria) in the world in which Polio has not been eradicated. He is organizing a dinner to be held in early 2010 to raise $1,000,000 for Polio Plus. People willing to donate $10,000 or who have the ability to donate $10,000 or more to RI’s Polio Plus will be invited to attend. If you or someone you know should be invited to this event, please let me know and I will be sure an invitation is received. In planning for this $1,000,000 dinner Dave McSpadden talked to The Rotary Foundation people in Evanston, Illinois. Because of the work of the United Nations, donations from people and organizations such as the Gates Foundation and Rotary International’s Polio Plus campaign, Dave was told that it is very possible polio will eliminated from this earth within the next three years. Yes, Rotary really does make a difference.
