Eisteddfod Dance at Pymble

Please note: all information listed below (dates included) are for current students, as well as new students entering the College in 2019. The Eisteddfod Dance Team is a selective team of talented and promising dancers who wish to excel, be challenged, and be a part of a dedicated Dance group. The College offers 8 x level-based Groups from Years 4 – 12, that rehearse once a week, participate in one compulsory technique class a week, and compete at Eisteddfods and other events during the year. Entrance into a group is by audition only, and all students are encouraged and welcome to audition. The Eisteddfod Dance Groups have been a tradition at the College for many years. Students accepted into the Eisteddfod Team are expected to meet all rehearsal and performance requirements. Students must read through this Information Pack, with their parents/guardians, and complete the Audition Registrations before auditioning. Please take your time to fill out the required forms via the Pymble Skoolbag App by the due dates. Pymble’s Dance Program offers a variety of Dance classes in all styles and levels. Information regarding registrations for the Onstage, Offstage and Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Ballet Streams, of the Co-Curricular Dance Program, will be emailed out to all students from the Sport and Activities Department later in 2018.

Eisteddfod Dance Team 2019 - Groups

In the Junior School, the Eisteddfod Team includes 1 x Jazz Group and 1 x Lyrical Group of students from Years 4 – 6 (2019).

In the Secondary School the Eisteddfod Team includes 3 x Jazz Groups and 3 x Contemporary Groups of students from Years 7 -12 (2019). The groups are level based; White being the top-level group, Scarlet, the second level group, and Navy, the third level group.

Junior School Eisteddfod Dance Group

Jazz (Junior) The Junior Jazz Eisteddfod Group (Years 4 to 6, 2019) will remain as one group of 20 to 30 dancers. The Jazz Group learn two challenging routines during the year, and students need to be skilled, and willing to improve in Jazz technique, performance quality, and musicality.

Lyrical (Junior)

The Junior Lyrical Eisteddfod Group (Years 4 to 6, 2019) will remain as one group of 12 to 20 dancers. The group will learn two challenging routines a year, and students need to be skilled, and willing to improve in Lyrical technique, performance quality, and musicality. Technique Classes – Eisteddfod Groups In 2019, it will continue to be compulsory for Junior School students to attend a Technique class as part of their commitment to the Eisteddfod Team. Students are expected to enrol online for the Technique class when the 2019 Sport and

Activities online registrations open. All Eisteddfod students are eligible for a 50% discount on the Technique fee, and this will be applied before it is debited to your College account. RAD Ballet and external Ballet classes will be acknowledged as a Technique class, and students will be able to submit a Technique Exemption Form (provided in 2019).

Eisteddfod Group Requirements

Any Junior School students wishing to be a member of the Eisteddfod Groups must; • Commit to attending the scheduled weekly class all year. • Commit to performing at all of the Eisteddfods the group is entered in during the year. Eisteddfod dates are to

be announced when information is released. Some Eisteddfods release their dates six months in advance, and others two to four weeks before an Eisteddfod.

• Attend the entire Eisteddfod Intensive Weekend – Saturday 11 May and Sunday 12 May 2019 (TBC) • Commit to performing at the College Co-Curricular Dance Showcase, and be available for all rehearsals during

Showcase in Week 5 of Term 4. • Enrol in and attend one Ballet or Technique class for the year. • Wear the full Eisteddfod uniform to classes and Eisteddfods. Uniform order forms will be given out early in 2019. • Keep their hired Eisteddfod costume in excellent condition all year and return by the due date after Showcase. • Check student emails at least twice a week for communication regarding Eisteddfods/classes. • Follow the Absence Process document (provided in 2019) when clashes arise with other events. • Uphold the College values while participating in all Eisteddfods and classes. • Communicate with the Dance Department about any issues that may arise during the year. • Be available for lunchtime rehearsals when needed and prioritise these during the Eisteddfod season.

General Information

2019 Eisteddfod Intensive Weekend/Day In 2019, all Eisteddfod Groups will be required to attend a compulsory intensive weekend of workshops. The weekend will be held at the start of Term 2 (tentative dates: Saturday 11 May and Sunday 12 May) and will include a variety of exciting workshops, as well as sessions dedicated to learning and polishing the 2019 Eisteddfod routines. Costumes In 2019 students will be required to hire their costumes for the year $55.00 per student, per group. At the end of the year, students who do not return all costume items in a satisfactory condition will be charged the full price of the costume (generally $110.00 per costume). Costumes for each group will either be from the College costume stock, or new garments which will be ordered specifically for the groups theme of dance. Students may be required to source specific accessories.

Technique Classes Eisteddfod class time is devoted to learning and polishing routines. Although it is expected that students in the Eisteddfod Groups already have accomplished a high standard of technique, for their age, it is important that they are regularly attending a Technique class to continue developing their strength as a dancer and for injury prevention.

Eisteddfod Group Costs – Junior School Students

Yearly Enrolment Fee (per group) $757.00 per group Yearly Technique Class Fee Please see 2019 Sport and Activities information for prices (available December 2018) Conditions for the Technique discount are; • Students can only receive the 50% discount once in a calendar year off the advertised price of the class selected. • The discount can only be applied to one Technique class or Ballet class. • The maximum discount amount that can be applied, is capped at $378.50

Costume Hire Fee $55.00 per student, per Eisteddfod Group Uniform - essentials $160.00 approx. Uniform - optional extras from $32.00 approx. Audition Information and Process – Junior

Audition Process The auditions are conducted in a positive and supportive learning environment, allowing students the opportunity to participate in a class-style learning session, and a week later, a formal audition. The learning session provides students with the opportunity to learn a short combination taught by a Dance staff member. All students will then have the opportunity to perform their combination for the panel at the auditions. The audition panel includes key Dance Staff Eisteddfod members and the Dance Co-ordinator. Students will be allocated to small groups of four – six students, by the teachers. They will perform their audition combination in these groups. Students may then be required to perform the combination in a variety of different groupings. Required Steps

1. Read all relevant information in the Eisteddfod Information booklet 2. Register for the Auditions via the Pymble Skoolbag App, through the eForm ‘Eisteddfod Dance Auditions 2019

- Expressions of Interest’ Instructions on how to download the App and complete the registration can be found towards the end of this document.

3. Attend the Audition Learning Session for the style (s) that you are auditioning for, and learn the combination 4. Rehearse the combination in preparation for the Audition 5. Attend the Audition Session for the style(s) you are auditioning for. 6. Check the Announcement of the Groups when it is emailed at the end of Term 4 7. If you are successful in being placed in a group, you will be eligible to register in that group and a technique

class via the CCSA Registrations at the end of Term 4.

Please read below the audition dates and times for the Junior School Eisteddfod Team. All students in Years 4 to 6 in 2019 are invited to audition. Parents are not permitted to watch. Please note, that a member of the 2018 Eisteddfod Group is not guaranteed entry into a 2019 group. All audition combinations will be available for students on video and will be emailed to the registered email address after the audition learning sessions are over. It is recommended that all students must attend the Learning Session to be considered for an Eisteddfod Group. If students are unable to attend the session, they must notify the Dance Department at [email protected] and they will be advised to learn the routine off the video. Students who are not able to attend the audition must still register and indicate an absence audition and submit a video for grading. Skills Necessary – A guide only • Clean double pirouette (or potential) • Dance progressions (gallops, kicks, leaps, turns) • Excellent stage presence and musicality • Excellent technique and flexibility

What to Wear to the audition? • Leggings/bike shorts/leotards • House shirt or PE shirt, or any form fitting singlet top- no mid-drifts • Jazz audition - Jazz shoes • Lyrical audition - Ballet shoes, foot thongs or bare feet • In fairness, students are not permitted to wear their 2018 Eisteddfod uniform.

Secondary School Eisteddfod Dance Groups

Contemporary (Secondary) We will be offering three levels of Eisteddfod Groups for Secondary School; White, Scarlet and Navy. Each group will have 15 to 26 dancers, and will be graded. All groups will be open to Years 7 to 12, 2019. Contemporary White The Contemporary White Group will cater for the advanced Contemporary dancers who show exceptional skill in the style of Contemporary Dance. This will be the top Contemporary Dance Group in the Secondary School, and they will learn two routines a year. This group will perform at up to five Eisteddfods and/or events during the year. Contemporary Scarlet The Contemporary Scarlet Group will cater for the experienced Contemporary dancers who show excellent skill in the style of Contemporary Dance. This will be the second level Contemporary Dance Group in the Secondary School, and they will learn two routines a year. This group will perform at up to five Eisteddfods and/or events during the year. Contemporary Navy The Contemporary Navy Group will cater for the developing Contemporary dancers who show potential skill in the style of Contemporary Dance. This will be the third level Contemporary Dance Group in the Secondary School. This group will perform at up to five Eisteddfods and/or events during the year. The group will learn two routines a year. Jazz (Secondary) We will be offering three levels of Eisteddfod Groups for Secondary School; White, Scarlet and Navy. Each group will have 15 to 28 dancers and will be graded. All groups will be open to Years 7 to 12, 2019.

A Technique class is compulsory for Secondary School students. All students placed in an Eisteddfod Group in the Secondary School must enrol in a Technique class or apply for exemption. Students are expected to enrol online for the Technique class when the 2019 Sport and Activities online registrations open. Exemption may be given to students who; • Are taking a Technique class outside the College (must be Ballet or a recognised Technique class, and must be

To begin registration on the Pymble SkoolBag App To ensure you are receiving the latest updates for Co-Curricular Sport and Activities, it is highly recommended that all families (parents, carers, students) download the Pymble SkoolBag App. For more information and download instructions, click here. To subscribe to notifications for specific sports or activities please select Groups, then Add/Remove Groups. Remove the group when the sport or activity is no longer applicable to your daughter/s so you no longer receive notifications. To complete the eForm ‘Eisteddfod Dance Auditions 2019 - Expressions of Interest’ on the Pymble SkoolBag App, select eForms and search (in alphabetical order) for the form title you need to complete. Once in the form, complete the fields as required, and submit. You will receive a confirmation email upon successful submission. If you have not received confirmation, please try again. Please Note: Changes cannot be made once you have registered online. If you believe you have made a mistake, please forward your email booking receipt to the Sport and Activities [email protected] . No changes will be made over the phone.
