Putting the receiver into operation

Connecting the antennas

The receiver is supplied with two antennas which arenecessary for true diversity operation (see “Diversityreception” on page 22).

Mounting the receiver into a camcorder

The receiver can be inserted into the slot-in facility of mostprofessional camcorders. Suitable mounting kits are avail-able as accessories from your Sennheiser partner.

Mounting kits are available for the following camcordertypes (see “Accessories” on page 23):

A mounting kit consists of:

1 sub-D adapter

1 mounting frame

Screws

By way of example of an Ikegami or Panasonic camcorder, the following describes how to insert the receiver into thecamcorder’s integrated receiver slot:

Connect the antennas to theantenna sockets and .

 Screw the antennas tight.

Adjustment tips for the operating menu

Adjusting the headphone volume – PHonE

If you operate the receiver with a modified version of theGA 3041-C slot-in housing (see page 23), you can adjust theheadphone volume via the “PHonE” menu. The volume canbe adjusted between 0 and 64.

Caution! High volume!

Even short exposure to high volume levels can damageyour hearing! Adjust the volume for the connectedheadphones to a medium level before putting the head-phones on.

Selecting a channel – CHAn

Via the “CHAn” menu, you can switch between the channelsin the channel banks “U“ (variable bank) and “F“ (fixedbank).

When changing to the setting mode of the “CHAn” menu, the current channel number appears on the LC diplay panel. After approx. 1 second, the currently assigned receivingfrequency is displayed.

To select a different channel, press the button orthe button . The new channel number appears onthe LC display panel for approx. 1 second and then thecurrently assigned receiving frequency is displayed. The receiver immediately switches to the selectedchannel but does not permanently store it.

To store the selected channel, press the SET button .

Note:

If you exit the setting mode via the “ESc” menu, thereceiver switches back to the previous channel.

Selecting the frequencies to be stored in the channel bank “U” (variable bank) – tunE

Via the “tunE” menu, you can freely select the frequenciesto be stored in the channel bank “U” (variable bank).

Via the “CHAn” menu, select the channel whosefrequency you want to change.

Note:

The frequencies stored in the channel bank “F” (fixedbank) cannot be changed. When you have selected thechannel bank “F” and then select the “tunE” menu, thereceiver automatically switches to channel 01 of thechannel bank “U” and “U.01” briefly appears on the LCdisplay panel .

To change the frequency of the selected channel, pressthe button or the button .The frequencies are tunable in 5-kHz steps within aswitching bandwidth of 36 MHz max.

Adjusting the squelch threshold – SquELH

Via the “SquELH” menu, you can adjust the squelchthreshold. The squelch eliminates annoying noise duringtransmission pauses or when the received RF signal getsweaker.

Notes:

If the squelch threshold is adjusted too high, thetransmission range will be reduced. Therefore, alwaysadjust the squelch threshold to the lowest possiblesetting.

When in the setting mode of the “SquELH” menu, pressing the button (DOWN) for more than threeseconds will switch the squelch off. “Sql.off” appearson the display. If no RF signal is being received, hissingnoise will occur. This setting is for test purposes only.

Activating/deactivating the automatic receiver switch-on/off via the camcorder – Auto

Via the “Auto” menu, you can activate or deactivate theautomatic receiver switch-on/off via the camcorder.

Recommendations and tips

...for optimum reception

To avoid overmodulating the receiver, maintain therecommended minimum distance of 5 m between trans-mitter and receiver.

...for multi-channel operation

When operating a multi-channel system, make sure to onlyuse intermodulation-free frequencies. Your localSennheiser should be able to advise you of legal frequencysets for your country. Alternatively, where you know thelegal TV channels available, for rapid calculation ofintermodulation-free frequencies, you can use the SIFM(Sennheiser Intermodulation and Frequency Management)software, which can be downloaded from the Internet atwww.sennheiser.com under “Wireless Systems”.

...for a long service life of the battery box or accupack

Remove the battery box or accupack from the slot-inhousing when the receiver will not be used for extendedperiods of time. Store the battery box or accupack in a cooland dry place.

Additional information

Diversity reception

The EK 3241 operates on the “true diversity” principle:

A receiving antenna receives not only the electromagneticwaves which reach it by a direct path, but also thereflections of these waves which are created in the room bywalls, windows, ceilings and fittings. When these waves aresuperimposed, destructive interference occurs, which canalso be called “field strength gaps”. Repositioning thereceiving antenna can bring a solution, provided thetransmitter remains in its original position. With mobiletransmitters, however, the “field strength gap” will thenoccur with a different transmitter position. These “fieldstrength gaps” can only be eliminated with true diversityreceivers.

In true diversity, instead of one antenna and one receiverthere are now two antennas and two receiver sections. Theantennas are spatially separated. By means of acomparison circuit, the receiver section with the strongestRF signal is always switched to the common AF output. Therisk of the occurrence of “field strength gaps” in bothantennas at the same time is virtually nonexistant.

Information on the compander system

This receiver is equipped with HiDyn plus™, the Sennheisernoise reduction system that reduces RF interference. HiDyn plus™ offers extreme operational reliability andensures highest transmission quality.
